In order that a clearer understandingr ot my invention may be had, attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings, torming a part of this application, rand illustrating one possible embodiment of my invention. Referring to the drawing,l the 'ligure a sectional view ot' a locl embodying` my invention mounted upon a double wall construct-ion.
Referring to the drawings, the sate wall on which tne lock is mounted comprises an out-- er plate 1 and an inner drill proof plate 2 spaced from the outer plate. Extending through the outer plate and to the inner plate is a spindle tube 3, preferably of drill proof material. The outer end of tube 3 is lthreaded to receive the stationaryv dial plate 4 and lock nut 5. Lock case 6 is cured to the inner face ot plate 2 by means ot screws 6 which extend through perforations in plate 2 and engage in threadc-gl periorations in a washer 7 which is in threaded engagement with the inner end ot spindle tube 3, as at S.
About the spindle tube and directly over ywasher 7 is another washer or plate 9 ot drill prooi' material which preventsaccess to the washer 7 or su'ews (i by a drill or other vinstrument inserted through outerl wall l, and in the event of removal ot the spindle tube. Nor may this washer 9 be penetrated by means ot the drill to give access to these members. Thus the lock is secure against burvlarious attack at such points. As a modihcation, the drill proot washer 9 may be omitted and either or both the Washer 7 and screws 6 may be made ot drill prooi' material, but this would necessi-V tate the tapping of drill proof material tor the screws and thus wouldincrease the cost of the construction. Member 9 may or may not be threaded to tube 3, as desired.
lVithin the case 6 are regular tumblers 10 and a drive tumbler 11. The spindle hole through the tube 3 and the aligning hole 12 in the plate 2care of smaller diameter than the holes in the tumblers lO and 11, and-ir the arbor 13. For this reason it is piactiI cally impossible to engagerthe case or tumblers with a drill, punch or other instrument inserted through the holes in the 'walls 1 and 2, should the spindle and its tube be removed.

Thespindle 14 is squared at a rpoint 15 and is free to slide inwardly through the correspondingly squared hole in the driver 11. The square part of the spindle is larger than the spindle hole 12 in drill proof plate 2. The spindle may be attached and locked to a knob 1G in any suitable manner, for instance, vby being threaded into the knob and locked relatively thereto by a key V17 which is held in place by a name plate 1S, having a threaded luf; screwed into a threaded recess in knob 16. The movable dial plate 20 is secured to the knob.
The construction is such that should the knob 16 and plate 2() be removed in any explosives, since any explosive poured into Wardsv through the spindle passages in the case 6 and tumblers 10 and l17 and through the hole 21 in the case cover 22. As the hole in drill proof plate 2 is smaller than the opening in any part of the lock behind lll) this plate, it is impossible to dislodge the case or tumblers by operating an instrument from the outside ot the sate. As betore described, it is also ii'npossible to dislodge or to destroy the lock case mounting by working on the outside ot plate 2. A lock constructed and mounted in the manner de scribed deties all etiorts to dislodge or destroy or demount the same, so that the salie may not be opened in consequence of such attack.
The above construction also trustiates ri-tteinpts to destroy the lock by means of explosives, since any explosive poured into the spindle passages will flow right through the same, and it any explosion should occur there is such freedom tor expansion ot the gases that there will be no destructive consequences.
As many changes can be made in the above construction and as many apparently widely different embodiments ot this invention could be made without departing trom the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying diawings` be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense l/Vhat I claim isz" 1'. The combination with a wall comprising an outer plate and an inner plate spaced therefrom, of a spindle tube extending between said plates, a lock case on the inner surface of the inner plate, a member at the opposite surface of the inner plate and engaging the spindle tube, screws extending through said inner plate and engaging said case and member, securing the case to the plate, and a drill proot' plate disposed over A' saidinember preventing access to said meinber and to'said screws, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a wall having K an elongated spindle passage therethrough,
" a lock case mounted on the inner surface ot said wall, tumblersv is said case, a spindle mounted in said passage and detachably connected with said tumblers to actuate the same, and a spindle passage through said case and tumblers in alignment with and diainetrically larger than the spindle passage through the wall, whereby the spindle may be moved inwardly through said passages without dislodging the case and tuinblers, and whereby said ease and tumblers are rendered inaccessible to an instrument inserted through the spindle passage in the wall.
3. The combination with a wall having an elongated spindle passage therethrough, a lock ease mounted on the inner surface ot' said wall, tumblers in said case, a spindle mounted in said passage and detacliably connected with said tumblers to actuate the same, and a spindle passage through said case and tumblers in alignment with and diametrically larger than the spindle passage through the wall, whereby the spindle may be moved inwardly through said passagesV without dislodging the case and tumblers, and whereby said case and tumbleis are rendered inaccessible to an instrument inserted through the spindle passage in the wall, one o't' said tumblers being a drive tumbler and said spindle having a portion diametrically larger than said wall passage engaging in a perforation ot corresponding size in said drive tumbler tor simultaneous rotative movement with said tumbler and tor t'ree axial movement relative thereto.

The combination with a wall comprising an outer plate and an inner plate spaced therefrom, ot a spindle tube extending between said plates, a lock case on the inner surface of the inner plate, a member at the opposite surface ot the inner plate and engaging the spindle tube, screws extending through said inner plate and engaging said case and member, securing' theA case to the plate, and a drill proof plate disposed over said member preventing access to said member and to said screws, tumblers in said case, said inner plate having a spindle passage, and the case and tumblers having spindle passagesV diametrically larger than the passage in said inner plate, whereby said oase and tumblers are rendered inaccessible to an instrument inserted from the outside ot' said wall.
5. The combination with a wall comprising an outer plate andan inner plate spaced therefrom, ot a spindle tube extending between said piates, a lock case on the inner surface of the inner plate, a member at the opposite surface ot the inner plate and engaging the spindle tube, screws extending through said inner plate and engaging said case and member, securing the case to the plate, and a drill proof plate disposedIk over said member preventing access to said member and to said screws, tumblers in said case, said inner plate having a spindle passage, and the case and tumblers having spindle passages diametrically larger than the passage in said inner plate, whereby said case and tumblers are rendered inaccessible to an instrument inserted from the outside of said wall, one otl said tumblers being a drive tumbler and said spindle having a portion diametrically larger than said wall passage engaging in a perforation ot' corresponding size in said drive tumbler for simultaneous rotative movement with said tumbler and for free axial movement relative thereto.
