PAPER-FOLDING DEVICE.

This invention relates to paper folding devices, and an object of the invention is to provide a device for folding paper, a plurality of times, in which a plurality of forms are providedand arranged relative to each other to successively engage the paper and guide it to folding rolls for providing a plurality of folds in the paper, and further to provideadjustable mountings for the various forms to permit their adjustment for properly engaging and folding paper of different sizes as well as to permit their adjustment for changing the location of the folds in the paper.
A further object of this inventionis to 1 .provide suitable guards at the free ends of the forms which engage the paper and pre vent the edges from curling back and being improperly creased as well as to facilitate the flatwise guiding of the paper to the folding rolls.
Another object of this invention 1s to providea folding device which is applicable for use upon the napkin folding machines as disclosed in the application on napkin machines,

Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the improved paper folding mechanism.

Referringmoreparticularly to the draw ing the improved paper folding mechanism comprises a suitable supporting structure 1 which includes inclined supporting bars or braces 2 and suitable supporting means 3 for a roll of paper as shown at 1. able supporting rod Sand it swings free from the supporting rod, having its free end adjustably supported against accidental movement by a suitable adjusting screw 9. The adjusting screw 9 is threaded through a bracket 10 secured to a bar 1O connecting the supports or braces 2.
The sleeve 6 is vertically adjustable relative to the roll 7 and also relative to the initial folding form The receiving end of the second folding or guiding form 11 is attached to the sleeve 6, and in fact is extended and mounted about the sleeve, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, so that the second form 11 will be adjusted vertically upon vertical adjustment of the sleeve 6. The bore 12 of the sleeve 6 is threaded and receives therethrough the threaded'feeding screw 13 which is rotatably supported at one end by the supporting structure 1 and at its opposite end by the bight portion 14 of the inverted U shaped support 15. The feed screw 13 is held against longitudinal movement by means of a collar 16, and a thumb nut 17 is pinned upon'the feed screw for rotating it to vertically adjust the sleeve 6 and the second folding or guiding form 11. The second folding 0r guiding form 11 is of the same shape as the form 5, however, it is much smallerin size and has its base p0 sitioned sidewise or transversely to the manner in which the base of form 5 is positioned so that it will fold the paper a second time and guide it to the substantially horizontal creasing or folding roller 18 and rod 19. The
folding or guiding form 11 is braced by a brace 20 which is in turn connected by means of a cap screw 21 to a sliding block 22 which is adjustably carried by a suitable guide 23. The guide 23 is in turn attached to one of the legs of the inverted U shaped support 15.
The roller 18 and rod 19 have their'ends journaled in bearing boxes 24. which are adj ustably carried by suitable guiding supports 25. Adjusting screws 26 are rotatably connected to the bearing boxes 24 and are justed position thereon ,to the bearing boxes 41 and move the bearlng boxes 41 in and the other folding forms, being smaller in size, however. The folding form 28 rests in substantially vertical position and has its triangular face facing forwardly or outwardder 19 forming a sleeve 29 which is slidable upon the rod 19 and is held in adby means of a set is braced by an adwhich is carried by screw 30. Substantially U shaped guides ried by each of the forms 5, 11 and 28. The guides 87 are formed of wire and xtend along the delivery edges of the forms having their bight portions and tie major lengths of their legs spaced from the respective forms, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and f of the drawings. The terminals of the legs of the U-shaped guides 37 are soldered or otherwise suitably attached to the forms 5,11 and 28, as shown at 38 and they are adapted to guide the paper being folded, over the delivery ends of the respective forms and prevent curling and improper creasing of the edges of the paper.
From the form 28 the paper passes downwardly between the final pair of folding rollers 39 and l0. astrip of paper drawn over form 5 is folded along a central longitudinal line and is then creased by passing between roller 7 and sleeve 6. The folded strip is again folded along a centrallongitudinal line as it passes over form 11 and between roller 18 sleeve 29, and it then passes over fori 28 and between rollers 39 and d0 so as to be again folded along a central longitudinal line and then creased. The supporting rods and the sleeves of the forms fitting about the rods provide hinged or pivotal mountings the forms in the permitting adjustment of manner above described.
While in the foregolng description and the drawings only three forms have been is provided with an disclosed together with the companion sets of folding rollers it is to be understood that any number of the folding forms may be arranged in sequence, depending upon the size of the paper to be folded andthe number of folds to be made in the paper.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that the paper taken from the roll 4 will be drawn over the respective guiding and folding forms, and that during this passage over each form and the folding members associated therewith, the paper will be folded and creased so that after it issues from the final pair of rollers, the paper can be led to any suitable mechanism for further treatment. It is to be un derstood that the paper may be drawn over the various folding rollers and through the various creasing members in any suitable manner such as by the mechanism shown in the applications heretofore referred to. By adjustment of the various folding rollers and creasing members, the exact location of the various folds or creases may be varied as desired and the various rollers and creas ing members may be adjusted to properly fold paper of different sizes. The adjustment of form28 is of particular importance as insuring creasing of the strip centrally thereof and proper delivery of the strip to the rollers 39 and 40.. By means of bolt 31, the slotted support 32 and nuts 33 the form 28 can be easily adjusted vertically about rod 19 and rectilineal adjustment of this form transversely thereof and parallel to its forming surface can be readily effected by means of the slotted base 34 and the cap screws 36. The forming face of form 28 is the face over which the strip passes or is drawn to be creased or folded, and is the upper surface or face of this form as viewed in Fig. 2. It will be noted that the transverse adjustment of form 28 is effected by rectilineal movement of the form, this adjustment being also transversely of or at right angles to the strip of material passing over the form as well as at right angles tothe direction of travel of the strip over the form. This feature is'of value in compensating for any side pull of the strip. It frequentl happens that the paper used for forming the napkins has a tendency to pull or stretch more at one side of the'strip than obtained by adjusting the form 28 transversely and in a straight line in a proper direction and sufliciently to overcome the side pull of the paper strip. The proper adjustment of the form is to be determined by experiment for each roll of paper. It will also be noted that the form 11 can be adjusted transversely of its forming face by means of screw 13, this adjustment being also rectilineal. The adjustability of form 11 provides means supplemental to the adjustability of form 28 for overcoming side pull of the paper and insuring accurate folding of the strip and proper delivery thereof to the rollers 39 and 4:0.
' It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In a machine of the character stated, a plurality of folding forms disposed in alignment to successively fold a strip of material passed over the forms, and means for adjusting certain of said forms transversely and parallel to the forming surfaces thereof.
2. In a machine of the character stated, a plurality of folding forms disposed in alignment to successively fold a strip of material passed over the forms, and means for adjusting certain of said forms in a plane at right angles to and transversely of the strip passingover the forms to compensate for side pull of the strip.
3. In a machine of the character stated, a plurality of folding forms disposed to successively fold a strip of material passed over the forms, and means for adjusting one of the forms transversely and parallel to the forming surface thereof.
a. In a machine of the character stated, a plurality of triangularly shaped folding forms disposed in alinement to successively fold a strip of material passed over the same, and guiding and creasing means mounted between said forms, said means acting to support certain of said forms.
5. In a machine of the character stated, a plurality of triangularly shaped folding forms disposed in aline-ment to successively fold a strip of material passed over the same, supporting rods, the forms having supporting sleeves fitting about the rods, and rollers positioned adjacent certain of said sleeves and coacting therewith to guide the strip and tocrease it during its travel from one forn'i to the succeeding form.
6. In a machine of the character stated, a plurality of triangularly shaped folding forms disposed in alinement to successively fold a strip of material passed over the same, supporting rode, the forms having supporting sleeves fitting about the rods, rollers positioned adjacent certain of said sleeves and coacting therewith to guide the strip and to crease it during its travel from one form to the succeeding form, and means for adjusting the forms on the supporting rods.
7. In a machine of the character stated, a plurality of triai'igularly shaped folding forms disposed in alinement to successively fold a strip of material passed over the same, supporting rods, the forms having supporting sleeves fitting about the rods, rollers positioned adjacent certain of said sleeves and coacting therewith to guide the strip and to crease it during its travel from one form to the succeeding form, and means for adjusting the forms on the supporting rods independently of each other.
8. In a paper folding device, an initial foldingform, means pivotally supporting said folding form, ad ustable means engaging said form for holding it in adjusted positions, a second folding form for receiving the paper from said initial foldingform, means for vertically adjusting said second form, guiding and creasing means between said forms, and vertically adjustable horizontal guiding and creasing means positioned at the delivery end of said second form.
9. In a paper folding device, an initial folding form, means pivotally supporting said folding form, adjustable means engaging said form for holding it in adjusted positions, a second folding form for receiv ing the paper from said initial folding form, means for vertically adjusting said second form, creasing and guiding means between said :t'orms, vertically adjustable horizontal creasing and guiding means positioned at the delivery end of said second form, a folding form pivotally carried by the last named creasing and guiding means and adjustable longitudinally thereof, and means for holding said last named form in adjusted positions.
10. In a paper folding device, an initial folding form, means pivotally supporting said folding form, adjustable means ens gaging said form for holding it in adjusted positions, a second folding form for receiving the paper from said initial folding form, means for vertically adjusting said second form, creasing and guiding means between said forms, vertically adjustable horizontal creasing and guiding means positioned at the delivery end of said second form, a folding form pivotally carried by the last named creasing and guiding means and 'adjustable longitudinally thereof, means for holding said last named form in adjusted positions, a pair of folding rolls for receiving the paper from said last named folding form, and means for adjusting the position w) an.
