MUFFLER.
Application filed larch 21,- 1921. Serial No. 454,048.
M invention-relates to improvements in primary object thereof is to provide certain improvements in construction whereby minimum resistance to the passage of exhaust gases is offered and the accumulation of back pressure in the mufller, which causes a serious loss of power, is avoided.
My invention in its preferred form c ontemplates a mufllercomprising a cylindrlcal casinghaving a conduit extending centrally and longitudinally through the casing, a concentrically arranged cylinder surrounding said conduit and terminating short ofthe for ward end of the main casing, the walls of which are disposed substantially midway between the walls of said conduit and said casing thereby providing outer and intermediate chambers, the intermediate chamber being in communication at its forward, end with said central conduit and at its rearward end with said outer chamber, said outer chamber being in communication at its forward end with said central conduit, and a manually operated valve positioned in said central conduit whereby the ases may pass directly through said central conduit when said valve is open but are forced to take a ath through said intermediate A furtherobject of my invention is to provide an adjustable link connection of novel and improved construction for attaching the manuall operatedfcontrolling lever to the valve 0 the mufller which is capable of a wide range of adjustments there y permitting the mufier to be readily attached to practically any automobile with standard connecting links and operating levers.
The invention consists in the novel constructions, arrangements and devices for carrying out the above stated objects and such other objects as will appear from the following description of certain preferred embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein' Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a preferred form of mufller embodying the principles of my invention; Y
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the mufller;
Fig. 3 is. a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of a mufiler provided with a-modified form of valve; an
duit is preferably formed by providing a shell 14, extending forwardly from the casting 12 and connecting with an inter-- mediate head castin 15, and a shell 16 between the castings lo and 11. The shell 16 is preferably formed integrally with the head 15. A concentrically arranged cylinder 17 surrounding said conduit extends fromthe head 12 to the intermediate head 15, the walls of this cylinder being disposed substantially midway between the walls of said conduit and said. casing. A
plurality of ports 18 are provided in the shell 14 just back of the head 15-and a plurality of ports 19 are provided in the shell or cylinder 17 in front of the head 12. One or more ports 20 are provided in the shell 16. A valve 21 mounted on a shaft 22 controls the flow or assage of the exhaust gases through the mu er.
To facilitate installing the mufiier on an automobile or a stationary gas engine I provide certain adjustable means on the shaft 22 comprising a disk 23 rigidly secured to the shaft 22 and which is provided with a plurality of apertures 24 concentrically arranged with respect to the shaft. The disk is provided with a lever 25 to which one end of a coil spring 26 is attached, the other end being secured to a bracket 27 mounted on the side of the' casin whereby the valve is normally held closed: Said lever 25 is provided with a pin 25 which may extend through any one of the apertures 24 to adjust the tension of the spring 26. A link 28 is rotatably mounted on the shaft and is provided wit a laterally projecting pin or In 29 which is adapted to enter any one of t e apertures 24., the link being held in position relative to the disk by means of a cotter pin or the like. The free end of the link 28 may be connected in any desired manner to a controlling lever, not shown. This arrangement is capable of a wide rang; of ad ustments and permits the mufller to readily attached to any automobile or gas engine with standard connecting links or levers.
The arrows on Fig. 2 indicate the direction of travel of the gases when the valve 21 is closed. A mufller constructed in accordance with my invention offers minimum resistance to the passage of the exhaust gases. The circuitous path which they are forced to travel through the intermediate and outer chambers )ermits the gases to expand to approximately' atmospheric pressure and to break them up thoroughly before being discharged to the atmosphere. If back pressure develops in the mufiler to any considerable 1 extent the valve 21 is forced open thereby permitting the gases to escape by passing directly through the central or main passageway.
The mutiler shown in Figs. l and 5 is substantially the same in construction as that shown in the preceding figures. except in the construction of the valve. The modified construction is provided with a butterfly valve 30 which is mounted on a shaft 31. This type of valve is also manually operable and may be provided with the adjust able means shown in the preceding figures. I
I claim:
A niuflier com rising a casing; heads clos ing the ends of t e casing, one of said heads having an inlet and the other head an outlet perforation; an intermediate casing mounted within the first mentioned casing said intermediate casing provided with a series of radial openings adjacent one end; an inner casing provided with a series of radial openings adjacent one end; a chamber between said intermediate and inner casings, one end of said chamber closed by the inlet head; a valve head support casing adapted to close the opposite end oi said chamber, said in ncr casing being supported by'the inlet head and said valve head, said inner casing adapted to aline with the inlet and outlet perforations; a shell formed integral with the valve head support and having radial openings formed therein, said shell adapted to aline with said inner casing to form a straight passageway therethrough; a valve pivotally mounted within said shell; and means for operating said valve to open or close said passageway.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa- Y ture.'
