Description

Patented Jan. 4, 1927.
NETE@ S'lell BENJAMIN F. WI-IITESIDE, 0F MOBILE, ALABAMA.
SHINGLE Application filed April S,
lily invention relates to shingles or tiles tor roots.
ln accordance with my invention l provide a shingle or tile preferably formed ot baked clay, although composition, metal` or any suitable material muy be used. 'lhe shingle or tile is so constructed, that after the base or lowerxnost row ot shingles is laid, the upper shingles may be laid in lapping relation, and the upper end portion ot all ot the shingles will lie llat upon the root. rllie edges or' the shingle or tiles are provided with rabbet joints, and these joints will properly inter-lit, regardless ol the relative position ot' the shingles or tiles in one row with relation to the shingles or tiles in the adjacent row. rlhe shingles or tiles will lie close together', when lapped, and provide a water-tight roo'l'.
ln the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a perspective view ot a plurality ot shingles or tile en'ibodying my inf vention, the saine being arranged in lapped relation,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through upper and lower assembled shingles,
Figuie 3 is a plan view of one ot the shingles or tiles,
Figure h'l is a bottom plan view or the saine,
Figure 5 is a transverse section taken on line 5 5 ot Figure 3,
Figure G is a similar view taken on line (-ti vot Figure 3, and
Figure 7 is a similar view laken on line T-7 ot' Figure Each shingle or tile embodies a plurality ot raised portions or ribs V1,0, which are preferably inverted ii/shaped in cross rection. These raised portions or ribs have connection with depressed portions or botioins ll. One outer bottoni li carries a wall or web l2 and the other outer bottom ll carries a wall or web lil. The web l2 provided with an upper groove le, torining a lower rabbet l5 and the web 13v has an upper rabbet 16 provided with a lower groove lT. The rabbet 16 ol one shingle tile is adapted for insertion within the groove 14 ot the other shingle or tile, as clearly shown in Figure l.

ends and also taper vertically along lines 19 toward their top ends. The co-acting webs l2 and 13 of adjacent shingles produce a rib 10a, havingv the same horizontal and vertical tapers and' these webs are tapered horisor-lally and vertically as shown. The depressions or bottoms ll, have their upper euri-aces longitudinally tapered and gradually increasing in width toward the top ol" the shingle or tile. These depressions or bottoms, have their lower faces, at their tops, longitudinally beveled or inclined, with respect to the remaining lower portions, forming an inclined tace 20, which extends troni a point 2t) to a point- 21. This tace 20a is ot a substantial length.
In laying the shingles or tiles, the lowern'iost row is lirst laid, and the beveled t ces 20 contact with the roof, thereby elevatingl the butt end ot the shingles or tiles and a strip or pearl, such as a inch strip is placed beneath the butt ends of the shingle or tile. YWhen the next row is laid, the butt ends of thY shingles or tiles lap the tops ot the lower shingles or tiles, which holds these butt ends spaced trom the root, whereby the beveled faces E20'dL Contact with the roof. n this manner, the shingles or tiles are in secure engagement with the root, and h ve a close interlocking engagement. They are secured to the roei" in any well known or preterred manner.
It is to be understood that the torni of' my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred er;- ample ot' the saine, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement oit' parts may be resorted to without, deggiarting :tron: the spirit ot my invention, or the scope oll the subjoined claims.
Having thus deiu'ilied n'iy invention, l ela-iin:
l. A shingle or tile including u plurality of upstanding hollow ribs, and bottoms connecting these ribs at their bases, the bottoms being longitudinally tapered and increasing in width upwardly and the hell w ribs being longitudinally tapered and decreasing in width upwardly, said bottoms being longitudinally beveled at their tops forming longitudinal inclined faces which entend upwardly toward the top ot the shingle or tile.
il. A shingle or tile including a plurality olil upstan ding hollow ribs which. taper horizontally and vertically toward ltheir tops, ont'. bottoms ronnecting these i'a at their bases, said bottoms being loiigitudinalljv tzipered and increasing' in width toward their tops, said hottoins being provided at their top ends with longitudinally inclined faces which extend upwardly toward their tops.
A shingle or tile including a plurality of ups'tanding hollow inverted V-shaped ribs which taper horizontally and vertically toward their to ,is and Hat hottonis Connect- 7 ing' these ribs at their bases, said hottonis Vheling` tapered horizontally toward their tops, the bottoms and ribs being et the saine length, said hottoins being' provided at their top ends with vertically inclined lower faces which extend upwardly toward their tops, the lower larger ends ot the ribs of one shingle being adapted for insertion upon the upper smaller' ends ot the rihs ot a lower companion shingle and to have wedging action therewith upon relative longitudinal movement, the bottoni inclined laces tilting the upper shingle so that it will properly co-act with the lower comprnien shingie.
In testimony whereof I alii); niy signature.
