IMPROVEMENT IN TOY PISTOLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 61,326, dated March 30, 1875; application tiled March 26, 1874.

To all whom it may conce/rn:

Be it known that I, TRUMAN CASE, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Toy Pistols; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specication, and represent, in-

This invention relates to the construction of a toy pistol t-o use what are known as parlor-matches for ammunition, the splint being inipelled from the pistol by the explosion of the detonating material at the end 5 and the invention consists, rst, in impelling the stock or splint of a match by subjecting the detonatin g material on one end of the said splint to pressure or concussion in an arm, the barrel of which is adapted to hold the splint while subjected to said pressure or concussion, and guide the splint as it is impelled from the barrel; second, in a pistol for discharging detonating matches or splints, provided with a hammer and trigger in one piece, so as to press upon and crush the detonatin g material 5 third, in combining the barrel and stock, constructed in one piece, with a hammer and trigger, also in one piece.

A is the stock, and B the barrel, constructed in one piece, with a recess, a, in the frame at the rear of the barrel, in which the trigger C is hung on a pivot, d. At the rear end ot' the barrel the bore is slightly enlarged, as at b, or otherwise formed, so that a match inserted into the barrel the detonating material may nd a bearing-surface. Above the pivot d the trigger extends to form the hammer D, which is in such relative position to that part or point of the barrel where the detonating material rests that by pulling the trigger the detonating material will be crushed between the hammer and the corresponding bearingsurface.

The match is introduced from the rear, the hammer thrown back for the purpose, and when the detonating material is crushed it causes a loud report, and iinpels the splint from the barrel, and is guided thereby.

In order to cover and prevent any possible escape of sparks at the breech from the explosion, I hinge a cap, E,to the breech, as seen in the drawings, which closely covers the hammer; but it may be raised therefrom, as seen in Fig. 2.

Pellets, instead of matches, may be used, if desired, they being placed between the hammer and the bearing-surface in the barrel.

I claim as my inventionl. The method herein described ot' discharging suitably-prepared match-splints or arrows from toy pistols or guns by exploding the detonating material, substantially as described, within a barrel adapted to hold the splint until the explosion, and to substantially guide it thereafter.

2. A toy pistol for exploding detonating Inaterial, provided with a hammer and trigger in one piece, and operated by a simple lever-press ure to crush said detonating material, substantially as specified.

3. The combination of the barrel and stock, constructed in one piece, with a hammer and trigger, also constructed in one piece, substantially as described. l

4. In combination with the stock A, barrel B, trigger C, and hammer D, the cap E, substantially as and` for the purpose specied.
