My invention relates lto flashigniters'for gas burners and the like, and more particularl to flash igniters of the reciprocable as i distinguished from the rotary valve type. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevational View of an igniterembodying the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section l0 through the valve and firing tip of Fig. 1;

Cage or casing 5 constitutes the plunger housing. It -is formed of standard'hexagon stock, preferably brass, and comprises an intermediate hexagonal faced body portion 7 having an upwardly extending tubular rejection 8 and a depending nip le 9 threaded at 10 into supply pipe 6. Tu ular rojection 8 and nipple 9 are coaxial and both are eccentricall disposed with respect to the intermediate ody ortion'7 to leave suicient stock to one si e of the common axis of projection 8 and nipple 9 for a union fitting for the torch tube 12 which leads to the firing tip or head 13.

The lower end of cage or housing 5 projects into the interior ofpi e 6 ,and forms a seat engageable by lthe .hea 14 of a plunffer `valve 15 whose stem 16 extends upwardly through chamber 17, slidably through a guiding and packing seating flange 18 and ,up throughl a chamber 19. Chamber 17 is bored u axially through nipple 9 and up into bo y portion 7 to the annular plunger v packing seating flange 18 and chamber 419 is lbored down through tubular projection 8 to flange 18 and coaxial with chamber 17. The diameter of bore 17 is larger than the diameter of stem 16 and forms an annular passage or chamber about the stem. A duct 20 o ens from chamber 17 into tube 12, said tu e having its valve end flared -out at 21 and secured ina transverse threaded bore 22in the off center body ,55 portion 23 by a union nut 24 threaded'into lthe upper end of "stem 16 and is` slida bore 23 and provided with a hexagonal head 25. e
A passage or duct 26 axially through the head 14 and stem 16 opens into annular chamber 17 through a-transverse duct 27 and with duct 27 constitutes a b -pass through which a restricted flow of uel is permitted to ignitin'g tip 13 to maintain the small pilot light which normally 4issues therefrom. .s The restricted or b -pass supply from duct 26 vthrough duct 2 and thereby the pilot light at the jet is decreased or increased by a valve pin 28, havin a lower needle end for .metering the fuel ow from duct 26 to tube 12 and having threaded engagement at 49 with the interior of the upper end of stem 16. At 50 the threaded ortion of pin 28 extends loosely through a utton 51 and has at its upper end a head 52 which fits in a recess 53 in the head of button 51', head 5 2 having a screw driverV slot 54 for threading it into and yout of stem 16, and j the lower end of duct 26 terminating 1n a: screw' driver slot 55 for` threading the plunger into button 51. 4
The shank of button 51 threads at 59 upcn mounted in bore 19. The upper surface of v lannular'flange 18 is inclined outwardly and seated upon said surface is 'suitable packing means 56 in the form of a fabric or fibre `washer anda metallic ring or washer 57 is arranged about stem 16 upon packing 56. Button 51 is normally projecte upwardly and head 14 into closed engagement with the inner end of nipple 9 by a coiled's ring 58 interposed between washer 57 and t e inner or lower end of the shank of button 51 and fitting at its outer end into a recess in said button. The tip 13 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is enlarged at its inner end and threaded at 60 upon the outer end of tube 12, and is tapered outwardly and rovided with outlet ports 61 which preferab y correspond in number to the number of burners; etc. grouped about the igniter and so4 alignedv that an i uiting flame will be projected upon each urner of the groupl when the Valve is operated.
The jet may be a single or multiple one and may be with or without a protecting hood, as desired. l'
In Figures 4 and 5 the outer end of tube 12 is turned up at 62 with the tip 13 disposed vertically instead of horizontally and provided as before with outlet/ports 6l through which the flame is directed toward the desired burner ,or burners.

The size of the normal pilot flame may be adjusted as desired by screwing pin 28 into or from stem 16. To ignite one or a plurality of burners, button 51 is depressed to unseat valve head 14 whereupon the fuel supplied to the jet is directly through the open end.v of plunger housing 5. This increases the supply to the jet and projects a long slenderciiame to the burner or to a number of burners for lighting same. A
