BRAKE-BEAM SAFETY GUIDE FOR RAILWAY CARS on COACHES.
Application filed March 12, 192th Serial No. 94,287. I
This invention relates to a brake beam safety guide for railway cars or coaches.
. One object of my invention is to provide a simple, practical and economical device of this cha :acter which may be easily and readily applied and removed without first removing or interfering in any way with the brake beams.
A further object of my invention is to provide a safety guide of the character specified which may be easily and quickly removed for repairs or replacement in the event of an accident or other emergency, without the loss of time and labor incident to first cutting off the nuts from the fastening bolts, used in connection with'presentstandard equipment.
With the foregoing and other objects in view that will readily appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings. which are for illustrative purposes only and are therefore not drawn to scale:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, illustrating the application of my invention.
Figure 2 1s an enlarged detail plan view of one of the brake beam safety guides, a portion of the sand-bar shown in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a central longitudinal section, taken on line 33 of Figure 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse section, taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 5 is a similar view. taken on line of Figure 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 6 is also a vertical transverse section, taken on line 6 6 of Figure 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows and Figure 7 is a horizontal section, taken on line 7-7 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention and in which drawings like parts are designated by like reference characters throughout the several views, A designates the truck of a railway car or coach. B the brake shoes, C the brake beams and D the sand-bar. These beam safety parts are of the usual form or c onstruction used in present standard equipment and hence. no further explanation nectlon is thought necessary.
In carrying out my inventlon,
in this coneach brake guide 1 is preferably formed from a single elongated strip or piece of steel having a flat upper surface slightly curved or inclined up 2 which is wardly, as
shown more particularly in Figure 3. Each safety guide is formed at the inner end with an lnwardly extending tongue 2 which extends under and fits against the bottom of the sand-board D, leaving a shoulder 3 at the junction of portion of the safety guide which the adjacent dc edge of the san As shown, each safety guide is secured to the sand-board substantially inverted L-shaped the tongue with the body fits against d-board.
detachably by the vertical hanger or clip 4i. The longer leg or member 5 of each hanger or clip is provided at its with a reduced cylindrical shank lower end or stem 6 which extends through a corresponding longitudinally disposed elongated sl ot or opening 7 formed in the tongue of the corresponding safety guide and terminates in an elongated head 8 which normally extends across or transversely of its slot 7.
The hangers or clips fit over or corresponding flanges 9 of the engage the sand-board and an elongated clamping block 10 is employed in association with each clip. These clamping blocks ex versely of the safety guide and with inclined inner edges 11, against the inner walls of the flanges. the upwardly of the pins 13 body portions 15 of the pins through corresponding vertical openin The clamping blocks are extending shanks or stems 12 by the cotter pins 14.. The
hanger or tend transare formed which fit sand-board secured to 13 extend a 16 in the tongues of the safety guides and are formed with heads 17 which bear against the bottoms of the aforesaid tongues.
By means of my connections,
the safety guides may be quickly and easily applied or removed, and there is no possibility of the guides working loose or falling from place.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it that the construction, tages of my invention will be rea stood without requiring a mor explanation.
is thought operation and advandily undere extended Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character specified, a brake beam safety guide, and means for detachably securing the safety guide to the sand-bar, said means comprising a vertical hanger carried by the guide and fitting over the corresponding side flange of the sandbar and a clamping block carried by the guide and engaging one side Wall or face of said flange.
2. In a device of the character specified, a brake beam safety guide and means for detachably securing the safety guide to the sand-bar, said means comprising a vertical hanger having a removable slot and head connection with the guide and fitting over the corresponding-flange of the sand-bar and a exnovable clamping block carried by the guide and fitting against the nner side Wall of said flange.
3. In a deviceof the character specified, a brake beam safety guide and means for de tachabiy securing the safety guide to the sand-bar, said means comprising a vertical substantially inverted L-shaped hanger havinga removable slot and head connection with the guide and fitting over the corresponding side flange of the sandbar, a clamping block bearing against the inner sine Wail of said flange and a headed pin and cotter for detachably securing the clamping block to the guide.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
