Description

R. H. WENTORF VALVE FOR COOKING VESSELS Jan. 4 1927. 1,612,845
Filed Dec. l2 1,921
Patented Jan. 4, 1927.
UNITED STATES i 1,612,845 PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT E. WENTORF, OF WEST BEND, WISCONSIN. ASSIGNOB T0 WESTBEND ALUMINUM COMPANY, A CORPORATION 0F WISCONSIN.
'VALVE FOB COOKING VESSELS.
Application illed December 12:*1921. Serial No. 521,802.
The invention relates to escape valves, and is more particularly directed to that class of valves used for cooking vessels, such as boilers or Steamers and has for its primary object the provision of an automatic poppet Other objects of the invention will ap ear from the following descri tion, whie is directed to the preferred em odiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification, in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a boiler cover showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the valve in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental sectional view of Fig. 1 taken on line 2-2 showing the valve in open position.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the assembled valve.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the stem of the valve.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail top plan view of the lower portion of the valve with thek stem removed therefrom.
Referring now to the-.drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the reference character 10 represents a cover for a boiler having a downwardly struck spherical concavity 11 in the approximate center thereof which has aperture 12 therethrough and concentric with concavity 11, through which aperture stem 1'3 is adapted to have reciprocal movement, there being a clearance between the periphery of aperture 12 and stem 13 for the escape of steam from the boiler whenpthe valve is in open position, as shown in Fig. 3. Stem 13 carries at its upper. end a spherical closure member 14, which is adapted to seat within the concavity`1 1 and close aperture 12 when in closed position, as shown in Fig. 2. A weight 15 is carried by the lower en d of stem 13 to retain the valve in closed position until such time as the ressure of steam within the boiler is sulliclent to raise the weight 15 by the pressure of the steam on the lower face of closure member 14 intermediate the periphery of aperture 12 and valve stem 13.` Weight 15 carries a plurality ofupstandin spacmg members 16 which spacing mem ers are adapted to contact with the underside of cover 10, thereby limitin the upward movement of the closure mem er 14 with relation to the cover 10. The weight 15 may of course be made of any suitable material and of such shape and contour as may be deemed desirable, though I prefer to form this weight in the shape of a hemisphere, as shown in the drawings.
In assembling my improved valve with the cover of a boiler IV insert stem 13 downwardly through aperture 12 in the cover and through central bore 17 in the weight 15 when the end of the stem may be flared in any suitable manner, as shown at 18, Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1s:
1. The combination with the cover of a boiler having a concavo-convex portion formed from the material of said cover, a spherical closure member adapted to seat in the concavity of said portion, a stem carried by said member, a weight carried by the inner end of said stem, and spacing members carried by said weight and normally spaced from the inner side of said cover.
2. The combination with the cover of a cooking vessel having a concave spherical portion formed integrally with the cover and extending toward the interior of the vessel with an aperture through the cover of the vessel at the center of the downwardly formedV spherical portion, the said aperture cutting away only av portion of the said downwardly formed spherical ortion, a spherical closure member adaptedp to seat in said downwardly formed spherical a stem secured to the closure mem er and being adapted to be reciprocably carried in the said aperture, and a weight carried by the lower end of said stem for normally seating the closure member on its said seat to form -a substantially vapor tight closure.
3.'The combination with the cover of a boiler having an aperture therethrough with a valveseat surrounding said aperture formed by having the material of the cover rtion,
surroundin the aperture pressed downwardly in t e general form of a. se ment of a sphere, a closure member for sai spherical valve scat having a co-operating surface in the form of a se ment of a sphere, a. stem connected with sai closure member and being adapted to press downwardly throu h said aperture, and a, weight earned by t e lower end of said stem and being adapted to hold said closure member normally m conl0 tact with said valve seat to close the valve.
In testimony whereof I have signed m name to this specication4 on this 30th day of November, A. D. 1921.
ROBERT H. WENTORF.
