IMPROVEMENT IN RICE-CLEANING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,281, dated March 23, 1875; application filed January 29, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. RUPERT, a resident of the city of New Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rice Cleaning Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object the separation and removal from rough rice ot' the beard, dirt, and trash usually adhering to the same, in order that the hulling of the said rice may be much more thorough and effectual.
My invention will be more clearly understood by referring to the drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my improved machine; and Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same, the bisection being through the line as w of Fig. 1.
My invention consists of an upright cylin der, A, which is provided upon its inner surface or periphery with corrugations, as shown at a a, 8:0. The outer shell of the cylinder A may be made of wooden staves banded together, or of sheet metal, while the inner corrugated surface may be constructed of a separate sheet of metal, or the entire shell of the cylinder may be constructed of cast-iron in one piece, as may be found more expedient. The cylinder A is provided at its lower end with a head, 12, in the center of which is a air-- cular opening, a, the object of which is to prevent an accumulation of grain or dirt beneath the revolving disk cl. Secured to the bottom of the cylinder is a brace, B, in the center of which is stepped an upright shaft, 0, Which is the axle for the heaters O and spiral screwplate 0, which, in their rapid rotations, eifected by means of hand, animal, or steam power, applied to a pulley upon the upper extremity, subserves the important purposes of deflecting the grain contained within the cylinder A upwardly and against the interior corrugated sides thereof, and thereby thoroughly agitating the grain until its outer covering or hulls are entirely freed of all foreign matter, when it is discharged through an opening, D, in the bottom of the cylinder by withdrawing a valve, (not necessarily shown,) and conveyed by any suitable means to a fanning apparatus, where it is finally relieved of all dust and made ready for the hulling process.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
