TOE.
Application 'fl len January My invention, relates to to aeroplanes and more particularly to such evices used as a watercraft having a hollow airtight body adapted to receive a quantity of harmless with water will cause the gasto expand an expel the water therefrom whereby the machine is propelled.
An important object of my invention is to provide a toy. of this character which may be used submerged in a container of water or which may glide along the surface there- .Another object is to provide a. convenient method of replenishing the supply of gas forming chemical.
Other objects and advantages including an adjustable arrangement -of the wings, rudder, stabilizers, etc., whereby a realistic motion of the machine is accomplished an the construction of a simple, practical and inexpensive toy of this character will become apparent from the following detailed description when viewed together with the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 'is a side elevational view of my invention shown submerged.
I Figure 2'is a cross sectional view taken on 'aline 2-2 of Figure-.1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figured is a'detailed view of the chemical cartridge, and
Figure 5 1s a sectional view thereof taken p on a line 55 of Figure 4.-
Referring now to the 'drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred form of my invention, I provide a hollow-body *5, circular in .cross section and tapering at each end, the rear 7 forwarde'nd'cut oil sharply thereby forming giving access to the-in '45 ing saidop'ening.
endterminatrng into a blunt point and the a circular opening terior'of the body. The mouth of said 0 ening is provided with a sleeve 6 whic 1s to conform to and. fit tightly within said mouth, said sleeve also tapered 'on its outer side having a central threadedqopening adapted to receive the threaded portion of a hollow rises the-means of clos-irplug 7 which com he plugis rovided with an annular shoulder 8 which a means for engaging -or' disengag ng the withdraw the same.

parts.
shoulder 11 providing gripping means to The walls of said cartridge are provided with" perforations 12 and the inner walls of said plug are also prm vided with perforations preferably in the form of slots 12. The cartridge is adapted to be filled with a suitable uantity of bromo seltzer or other suitable e ervescent powder which .expands and forms a harmless gas upon contact with water.-
Near-the rear end of the body and at the bottom thereof I provide an exhaust pipe 14 which communicates with the interior of the 75 (1' body. The exhaust pipe is slightly areuate in shape and extends ma rearw tion, resembling somewhat theskids commonly provided on the rear of airplanes and' said exhaust pipe is adapted to serve one of the functions of such skids, that isto su port the machine when motionless in a su stantially horizontal plane. A wheel 15 is mounted on the forward end of the body and a keel 16' is also provided on the under neath side of the body to balance the device. The propulsion of the machine is caused by filling the body nearly full of water then inserting the plug carrying the cartridge which-is filled with a suitable efiervescent owder as above explained. The machine is then placed in an aquarium, tub or other large container of water, and sinksto the bottom. As soon as the water comes in contact withthe powder a gas is created which tends to force the. water out of the bodyv through the exhaust pipe thereby urging the machine forward. As the water is expelled and more gas, is formed the machine becomes lighter and moves upwardly toward ;the surface as well as forwardly.
The'usual airplane wings 17 ."ateach side of the bod near the-forward 'end..an d likewise a rud er l8 and rear stabilizing planes 19 are provided at the tail, these attachments being secured by pins which fit tightl 'in openingsv formed in the body so that t es'e. parts may be inclinedat an desired-an 1e and maintained in such position. Thus t e steering and elevatlonal controls may be set so that the machine will perform numerous ae'rialstunts.
While I have shown a submerged type of machine as a preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that the same can also be readily adapted-as a surface craft by attachin a suitable pontoon or float and it may also be possible to modify certain details of construction Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims, and I accordingly claim as my own all such modifications to which I am entitled.
I claim:
1. A toy comprising a hollow b ody adapted to receive a quantity of water, an opening at one end thereof, a threaded hollow plug adapted to fit in said opening, a cartridge slidably fitted within the inner end of said plug, a gas forming powder within said cartridge, openings in the Walls of said cartridge and said plug, and an exhaust port at the opposite end of said body for expelling said Water and said gas.
I 2. A toy comprising a hollow body adapted to receive a quantlty of water, an opening" at one end thereof, a threaded hollow plug adapted to fit in said opening, a cartridge slidably fitted within the inner end of said plug, a gas forming powder within said cartridge, openings in the walls of said cartridge and said plug, an exhaust port at the opposite end of said body for expelling said water and said gas, and directional and elevational controlling means carried on the outside of said body. a
3. A toy comprising a hollow body, an opening formed in one end thereof, a removable plug adapted to seal said opening and extending outwardly from the body in continuation of the contour thereof, an exhaust port at the other end of said body and means {Salaried within said plug for propelling said 4. A toy comprising a hollow body, an
opening formed in'one end thereof, a re-- movable plug adapted to seal said opening 4 and extending outwardly from the body in continuation of the contour thereof, an exhaust port at the other end of said body and means carried within said plug for creating a gas in said body for discharging through 5' said exhaust port.
5. A toy comprising a hollow body, an opening at one end thereof, a removable threaded plug adapted to seal said opening and extending outwardly from the body in 5 continuation thereof, a cartridge carried by said plug, means carried by said cartridge for forming a gas within said body and an exhaust port at the other end of said body for expelling said gas.
toy comprising a boat shaped body arranged to hold a supply of liquid, a plug threadedly fitted in the forward end thereof and extending outwardly therefrom and forming a bow end for the boat in continuous contour therewith, an exhaust port in the opposite end thereof and a li uid exellinfi cartrid e carried b said n and C D D movable longitudinally in said body.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
