IMPROVEMENT IN BAND-SAWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,263, dated March 23, 1875; application filed September 22, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALLEN NEWHALL, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and in the State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Band- Saws; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view with the ends of the saw united. Fig. 2 is a like view, showing the ends detached; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View on line a: w of Fig. 1.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

This invention has for its object to present a cheap, easy, and secure method or means for uniting the ends of band-saws, and this is accomplished by fastening together the beveled ends of the pieces of the saw by the use of beveled lugs and slots provided in and upon said ends, all as will be hereinafter clearly set out.

In the drawing, letters A and B denote the two ends or two pieces of the band saw. These are so beveled at their outer extremities A B that when the two parts are placed together the union makes the two present only the even and regular thickness common to the whole length of the saw. This joint can be made so smooth that in use no part of it will offer any obstruction as the saw passes through the wood or material operated upon. Near the extremity of A is a slot, a, the outer end of which, a, is inclined inward, so as to form a bevel or slope. In like manner at b, in the piece B, is another slot having a like bevel or incline, b. The slot a thus made is adapted and designed to receive the lug .D at the extremity of piece B. The inner end of this lug is beveled at 01, so as to fit upon the incline or bevel a of the slot at when the two ends of the saw are, fixed in position, and likewise the slot b in the piece B is adapted to hold lug U of the piece A, said lug having its inner end 0 beveled, so as to fit upon the bevel or incline b.

The method or process of uniting these two ends will be readily understood from the foregoing description.

The two lugs are of such shape and 'size as to fit easily but tightly into the said slots. When thus placed in position and the two pieces pulled in opposite directions, their flattened and beveled ends come home evenly and smoothly, and the parts are held firm by the engagement of the bevels or inclines of said lugs upon the bevels or inclines in said slots, the two binding said ends rigidly together and locking them in place, so that when the saw is stretched in its usual position and use there is no danger of said ends coming apart.

This invention is capable of easy application, and is exceedingly simple and efficient.
