CALCULATING MACHINE.
Original application filed August 13, 1923, Serial No. 657,148, and in Sweden August 14, 1922. Divided and this application filed April 22, 1925.
This invention relates to calculating machines of the kind in which the main counting register is located in a traveling carriage and more especially to an improved tabulator for moving the carriage step by step in either direction.
The improved means for moving the carriage step by step comprises a rack secured to the carriage, a. pinion engaged by said rack and loosely journalled on a pin in the frame of the machine, two ratchet wheels secured to said pinion and having teeth directed in opposite directions, two swingable levers journalled coaxially with the pinion, a ratchet carried by each of said levers and means for bringing either of said ratchets into operative engagement with one of the toothed wheels for rotating the pinion while the other ratchet is brought into engagement with the other toothed wheel for limiting I the rotation of the pinion.

Referring now to the drawings, A is the carriage which at the top is provided with rollers 1 which run on a guiding rod 2 in the machine frame, and in the lower part with a guiding rod 3 which is guided by rollers 4 journalled in the machine frame (Fig. 1). Secured to the machine frame is a catch bar 5 in which at equal distances, corresponding to the distances between the numeral wheels in the carriage, notches 6 are provided and engaged by a spring-actuated catch 7 jo'urnalled on the carriage. cured in the frame of the maching and rigidly connected with two toothed Wheels 12 and 13 journalled on the same pin (Figs. 3, 1 and 5), said wheels having teeth directed in opposite directions. In the planes of said toothed wheels 12, 13 and at opposite sides thereof are provided spring-actuated ratchets 1 1 and 15 respectively, said ratchet-s being journalled on levers 16 and 17 re spectively which latter are journalled on the pin 10. Between the lower ends of the lovers 16 and 17 a compressed spring 18 is provided, said spring tending to hold projections 19 and 21) on the one arm of said levers 1G and 17 respectively in engagement with COII'GSPOIlCllIlg guiding pins 21 and 22 respectively secured in the front plate 23 of the machine frame. The levers 16 and 17 carry also screw pins 21 and 25 respectively the projecting ends of which are guided by slots 26 and 27 respectively in vertically movable slides 28 and 29 respectively. and 17 are angular and form stops 30 and 31 respectively for the ratchets 15 and 14 respectively. The slides 28 and 29 are provided at the lower portion with oblique portions 32 and respectively. Said portions are engaged by pins 34 and 35 respectively each supported by one arm of bell crank levers 36 and 37 respectively, which levels are rigidly secured to a shaft 38 journalled on the frame plate The other arms of said hell crank levers are connected by means of links 39 and 40 respectively with a releasing yoke 41 (Figs. 7 and 8) journalled in the frame plate 23 below the catch 7. The slides 28 and 29 are connected by means of pins 42 and 13 respectively with bell crank levers 11 and 15 respectively, said levers being connected by means of links 46 and 47 respectively with other bell crank levers 4S and 49 respectively which are connected with the keys 50 and 51 respectively. The slides 28 and 29 are provided at the top with pins 52 and 53 respectively engaging the rear sides of the. ratchets 14 and 15 respectively.
The operation of the tabulator for moving the carriage is as follows.
If for instance the carriage is to be moved to the right the key 50 is depressed causing the slide 28 to be drawn downwards and the oblique portion 32 to operate the pin 34 so that the bell crank lever 36 is turned and by The other arms of the levers 16 p means of the link 39 raises the yoke 41 which latter lifts the catch 7 out of engagement With the locking bar 5 whereby the carriage is released. Furthermore, the pin 52 presses the ratchet 1 1 into engagement with the corresponding ratchet wheel 12 which is rotated together with the pinion 1150 that the carriage is moved to the right as soon as the slide 28 during the continued downward movement rotates the lever 16 by means of the screw pin 24. When the lever 16 is rotated its projection 31 also operates the other ratchet 15 so that the latter engages its corresponding ratchet wheel 13 and limits the movement exactly to one step. corresponding to the distance between the successive nuineral wheels in the carriage. When the key 50 then is released the slide 28 returns to its normal position and the ratchets 14 and 15 are brought out of engagement with the ratchet wheels 12 and 13 respectively. At
' the same time the catch 7 engages a notch 6 of the locking bar 5 so that the carriage will be locked in the new position. For moving the carriage to the left the key 51 is depressed thus causing the slide 29 and its cooperating parts to be operated in a similar manner to that above described.
As the ratchets 14 and 15 in their normal positions are out of engagement with the ratchet wheels 12 and 13 respectively the car riage can released by depressing the handle 8 of the catch 7 by hand whereupon the carriage can be moved to the right or to the left any desired number of steps.
What I claim is: a
1. In a calculating machinehaving a traveling carriage, a device for moving the earriage step by step in either direction comprising a rack secured to the carriage, a pinion engaged by said rack, two ratchet wheels secured to said pinion and having teeth di rected in opposite directions, ratchets for cooperation with said ratchet wheels, two
swingable levers journalled coaxially with the pinion and each carrying one of said ratchets, and means for bringing either of said ratchets into operative engagement with its correspondingratchet wheel for rotating the pinion while the other ratchet is brought into engagement with the other ratchet wheel for limiting the rotation of the pinion.
2. In a calculating machine having a traveling carriage, a device for moving the carriage step by step in either direction, comprising a rack secured to the carriage, a pinion journalled on a rigid pin, two ratchet wheels secured to said pinion and having oppositely directed teeth, ratchets for cooperation with said ratchet wheels, two levers journalled co-axially with the pinion and each carrying one of said ratchets, Key-operated slides adapted to operate each one of said levers and its ratchet for bringing the latter into engagement with its ratchet wheel, and a projection on each lever adapted to operate the ratchet of the other lever so as to cause it to engage its ratchet wheel for limiting the rotation of the pinion.
3. In a calculating machine having a travcling carriage, a device tor moving the carriage step by step in hither direction comprising a rack secured tothe carriage, a pinion journalled on a rigid pin, two ratchet wheels secured to said pinion and having oppositely directed teeth, ratchets for cooperation with said ratchet .wheols, two levers journalled coaxially with the pinion and each carrying one of said ratchets. a notched locking bar. a catch provided on the carriage and normally engaging said locking bar. and key-operated slides adapted to release said catch and to operate each one of said levers and its ratchet for bringing the latter into engagement with its ratchet wheel.
