IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 61,235, dated March 23, 1875; application filed October 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. HUGHES, of Irondale, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings. which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 3 is an end View.
This invention has relation to nut-locks for railroad-rail joints; and consists in the novel construction and arrangementofparts, as hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A A design ate sections of rail joined together and secured by the fish-plates B B, bolts 0 O, and nuts D D. E E designate blocks having rabbets in their under or inner sides, fitting the nuts, loops 0 projecting from their outer surfaces, and holes through their overlapping portions 0, for the passage of the bolts. F F are auxiliary nuts, made of thin plates, and bent 011 the ends to form loops 9 g. G G are keys, consisting of pins having looped or headed ends it and swiveled stops h.
The nut-lock, as described, is applied complete by first placing the blocks E E over the nuts, then screwing on the auxiliary nuts F F, and lastly inserting the keys through the loops 9 g, the short keys G being also passed. through the loops 6.
The principal features of my invention are the looped nuts and the keys. In some cases the blocks may be dispensed with.
The keys may be applied in the way shown, the key G passing through the loops of two auxiliary nuts, and the keys Gr each through a single nut; or the long key may be dispensed with. So, also, may the short keys when the long key is employed.
To remove the keys, the swiveled stops it are turned so as to pass readily through the loops.
My nut-lock will be found to possess many advantages. It is simple, easily and cheaply manufactured, and capable of being readily applied to nuts without necessitating the alteration of the rail-joint appliances, while its parts are so arranged as to allow for the usual expansion and contraction of materials.
Having described my invention, I claim- The recessed blocks E, auxiliary nuts F, and keys G, in combination with the bolts 0 and nuts D, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of October, 1874.
SAMUEL T. HUGHES.
