' HAIR CRIMPER.
Application filed January The object of the invention is to provide a device for manual use in which the strands or looks of hair may be placed and subjected to heat by cooperating elements effecting uniform crimps so as to give the hair a wavy eii'ect.
lVith this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view just below the plane of the top.
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2 but showing the crimping elements in separat-ed relation.
Figure 4: is a central vertical sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 51- 1- of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure Figure 6 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Figure 4. The crimping elements consist of the toothed rolls 1 and 2 preferably of the con- 30 tour of gears, so that the teeth may interlock upon the movement of the roll 2 toward the roll 1. The rolls are enclosed within a casing 3 made preferably of some insulating material, such as porcelain or the like, the casing being provided with a-fingerhold 41 at one end with a cooperating fingerhold 5 carried by a slide 6 on which the movable roll 2 is supported.
Both rolls are mounted for rotary move-- ment, the roll 1 on a spindle 7 fixed in the bottom wall of the casing and the roll 2 on a spindle 8 carried by the slide 6 and traversing a slot 9 formed in a metallic plate 10 seated within the casing on the top face of the bottom of the latter. The hubs of the rolls 1 and 2 are hollowed out for the reception of heating elements 11 of which one terminal of each is grounded to its respective roll and the other terminal connected to a sliding contact, the resistance element in the roll 1 connecting with a contact 12 and that in the roll 2 connecting with a contact 14,
The contact 12 effects sliding engagement with a ring 15 carried by a cover element 16 on the inner face of the latter, the ring 7, 1925. Serial No. 1,030.
being provided with a tongue 17 having an exteriorly exposed terminal 18 to which the conductor 19 is connected. The contact it engages a collector disk 20 provided with a tongue 21 projecting through a slot 22 in the wall of the casing, the terminal 28 of the tongue connecting with the conductor 24;.
To shield the collector disk 20 from the roll 2, so that only that portion engaged by the contact 14: may be exposed, a central in sulating disk 25 is secured to the disk 20 on the under face and a ring 26 also secured to the disk on the same face, thus providing an annular contact element with which the contact 1 1 may engage.
As the roll 2 is moved toward and'away from the roll 1, the collector disk 20 moves with it and the tongue 21 moves back and forth through the 'slot 22. Current is conducted to the heating element from the source of supply through the conductor 24, the tongue 21, the collector disk 20, the heating element in the hub of the roll 2, the plate 10, the heating element in the roll 1, the collector ring 15, the tongue 17 and the conductor 19.
The side walls of the casing are separated to provide a transverse channel 27 in which a strand of hair to be crimped may be laid. This done, and current admitted to the heat ing elements by the closing of a switch (not shown), the roll 2 is moved toward the roll 1 by the application of pressure on the slide 6. The strands of hair are thus forced in between the teeth of the intermeshing rolls and the roll 1 is then rotated by means of the handle 28 carried by the spindle 7 and rotation of the roll except in one direction is precluded by means of a tangentially arranged flat spring 29 wiping over uniform- 1y spaced pins 30 carried by a disk 31 mounted on the outer face of the cover section 16. As the roll 1 is thus rotated, the strand of hair is advanced through the device, with the result that the constantly intermeshing teeth of the two rolls effect a uniform crimping of the strand.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
V 1. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a casing, crimping rolls contained in the casing and provided with intermeshing teeth, a slide supporting one of the rolls, and finger-holds provided respectively on the casing and on the slide.
2 A device for the purpose indicated comprising a casing formed with a transverse channel, crimping rolls mounted in the casing on opposite sides of the channel and provided With interrneshing teeth, a slide supporting one of the rolls finger-holds mounted respectively on the casing and on the slide, and a handle for imparting rotary movement to one of the rolls.
3. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a casing formed With a transverse channel, crimping rolls mounted in the easing on opposite sides of the channel and provided with interlneshing teeth, a slide supporting one of the rolls, finger-holds mounted respectively on the casing and 011 the slide, a handle for imparting rotary movement to one of the rolls and means operatively connected With the handle for precluding rotation of said roll except in one direction.
In testimony whereof he afiixes his signature.
EARL TAYLOR.
