STANLEY SMUTI'JY, OF Cl'CAG/J,
CEKADTEK Application lee for establishing diterent circuits, and et. d e siLl e time being; so constructed tbit the se l() multeneous operation ot such peo eers-es the closing` of only one of seid circuits.
@ther objeets will appear hereinafter The invention consists in the eoinbin and arrangements of ports hereinsiter oescribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying; dre-Wings forming e port of this specieution, and in Which- 0 Fig. 1 is e fregmenterj vien7 of en eutomobile body, partly in section, showingmy invention in position thereon;
Fig. 2 is en enlarged top plan vie-v ot e switch used in connection with my invention, showingseme in neutral position in Jull lines, and in operative position in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is e section on the line 3-8 ot Fig. 2;
Fig. l is e 'front elevation ot signalling;- larnps adapted to be operated by seid switch; and
Fig. is e diagrammatic layout of the various circuits used in connection with invention.
The preferret construction illustrated in the drawings comprises e switch casing 10,
preferably secured beneath the l'loorbom-c 1 of en automobile. Such casing' is pret n if;
o disc 12 oit suitable insulot provided Wit.l *0 ino; materiel and secured in said disc one side oi' the eosin@l is e elongated Contact member 13, preferably arcuate in sfinge., such Contact member being; connected b v s Wire lll with e. suitable source et current.
is preferably grounded on the automobile, land provided with su t l dicia 20, in this particular instance Go The Contact 16 is connected l .7 ineens of a Wire 21 with a lamp Q2, which lamp is also grounde, L: i elle, and .Y -indicia 23, su .n
n lenen 2 o oilE the automobile leunt-ed on ine-diete its ends. which pr 10. throueh 9,9, sind ends beingr pretersblv turned us shown.. and provi-red With nert'oretions 30 und 31, The ber is preferably mounted on s disc connections between the c Y s contacts 16 and 17 when tue .e oscillating; the bar 27 com`- joris/es s connection betvvee end of such e 'bedel ,311 o the automobile,
nection rbetween the other end ot H E the clutch nodal The the ber 27 penal in'eztereblv conformes e rod jivotollv secured to such breite bedel.,
the roer end of Wh1 or connectinm` the clutch jY euml to t' 217. preferably consists rod 39 sin iler to the rod 3S. one end of the rod 39 l eine1 pivotollv connected to the cluteli Dedo-l 33, und
opposite end oit seid rod project-m0' the aperture 31 in the eno et the bur nity the rod so bei*4 'i Washer end l spring; oit
the through 27. the ext provided ivi li weaker construction then the spring' ternosed between tl e Washer 420 er A bfi' 27.
jacent end et "be 722V t n 'depressed the bar 27 is swung into position to engage the contact i6 and close the circuit i throuah the lamp 22. lVhenbot-h pedals are simultaneously depressed, due to the greater strength ofthe spring 39, 'the bar 2,7 is swung;` into 1position lto engage the Contact '16, and thusfestablish a circuit `through `the light 22. The lfeatures above described are ,particularll y desirable for the .reason that oftentimes Iin order to slaclen the speed of the vehicle preparatory "to stopping, the driver .cuts the power 'to the minimum and depresse. the'brake pedal without depressing the clutch pedal, relying on the compression of the motor to aid in reducing the speed of the vehicle, the light 22, Which may be red in color, during 'this 1p eriod being; lighted signifying that the driver intends to stop, and finally when the `clutch pedal is depressed, the red light remains in operation due to ythe fact that ythe spring` 39 overcomes the .spring 42; and When both brake and clutch Ipedals are depressed simultaneously, the red :light isenergized in like manner. it is also frequently desirable to reduce the .speed of ,the vehicle by disengaging the clutch, with vno intention Vof stopping; consequently when the clutch pedal is' separately7 depressed the greenlight will signi-ty that no stop is Yto be made. This 'feature is also useful in starting .the vehicle as it is apparent that the rgreen light is operated by depression of the clutch, thus ,signifying that the vehicle is :about .to proceed.
vlhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for car 1ying` vmy invention into eilect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do ,not Wish to be limited to the ,precise details of construction set forth, but Adesire to avail myself of such variations and .claiiiias new and desire to securer by Letters Patent is:
l. An apparatus of the character described comprising a casing; a disc of insulating majtegial.-n'iounted in said casing; an arcuate contactmounted in one side of said disc; a plu Vrality of spaced :contacts mounted in the other side of said disc; a swinging` member havingw a disc ofinsulating'material thereon, tlierefbeing a metallic plate connected `to said disc and adapted to'connectsaid contacts 1by swinging` movement 4oit said swinging -member.; means vfor connectiiigthe'opposite -ends .of said sivingingmember tothe clutch fand brake pedals of an'automobile.; land resilient means disposed in said vconnecting,` means, one of "which is of less strength than the other, so Aarranged that when lboth pedals are depress-el said swinging member -ivifll be operated in a` predetermined direction.
An apparatus of thecharacter'described comprising a. casing; a disc1of'insulating-materialmounted insaid casing; an'arcua'te contact mounted in one side of said disc; va plurality of spaced contacts mounted in fthe other side of said disc: a swinging member adapted to have a disc of insulating material mounted thereon, therebeing' a metallicgplate connected to'said disc'and adaptedto'connect said contacts by the swinging'movement-of said swinging member; a `rod pi'votallyV connected to the bralte jpeda'l of lan lautomobile and extending `through one end lof said swinging member; yresilient Vmean-s disposed between'the end of said swingingmember and the extremity of said rod; and a rod pivotally connected to ythe clutch pedal of `said automobile and extending through the end of said swinging` member, there being resi-lient means mounted between the end 4of said swinging Vmember and the extremity Vof said rod, such resilient means being of less strength than the resi-lient means first inentioned.
ln testimony whereof tl have signed my name to this specification.
STANLEY `SMUTY.
