Dec. 28 1926.
C. A. BRAUDES RUG NEEDLE Filed Dec 50, 1925 ATTORNE Patented Dec. 28, 1926.

CLARENCE A. BRAUDES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RUG NEEDLE.
Application filed December 30, 1925. Serial No. 78,273.
In the art of embroidery needles, it has heretofore been proposed to employ a needle of relatively small diameter and to position the same in the end of a small tubular handlc or cylinder about the size of a lead pencil, said small embroidery needle being clamped in position by various means. These devices are relatively small and light in weight and can be manually held like a pen or pencil and manipulated with respect to the silk or linen fabric, which is commonly'enjlploycd with little fatigue, since the needle being very small can be readily pushed into and withdrawn from the fabric.
In my present novel device, which relates solely to a rug needle, a dilferent condition is present, since different materials are employed both as regards the fabric or base of the rug, and as regards the yarn which is employed, said yarn being usually wool and of a fluffy character and many times the diameter of the silk thread which is usually employed in an embroideryneedle.
In the use of my novel rug needle, as the fabric or base of which the rug is made hecomes nearly filled up with the yarn loops which constitute the rug design, a considerable amount of pressure is required to force the rug needle into the rug base, and in ad dition means must be provided for preventing the fluffy woolen yarn from kinking withinor in proximity to the handle. It is further essential in rug making to employ, as a needle, a tube having approximately a bore of in order to accommodate the fluffy woolen yarn employed, and it is further necessary for said needle to be firmly and rigidly mounted or secured in the operating handle. As a considerable amount of pressure is required to force the needle and the yarn carried thereby through the rug base as the rug is nearing completion, it is consequently necessary to provide a well defined abutment or wall upon the forward end of the needle handle for the operator to press against which wall also serves to reinforce the front end of the handle which secures the shank of the needle holder, which in practice has preferably a driving fit therein. For the purpose of reducing fatigue to a minimum, it is essential and preferable that the handle be light as possible and made of wood or some equally cheap and light material, so that the weight may be reduced to a minimum, and with the above ends in view, my invention consists of a novel construction of a rug needle having a tapering yarn chamber in the rear thereof, which latter merges into a. cylindricalpassage, which communicates with the counter boreor seat in the front end of the handle, into which the fluted shank of the needle holder is driven, said needle holder being provided. with a longitudinal bore of suliicic-nl' area to lurcommodale nairumum, intermediate, and minimum sized needles, whereby provision is made for using needles of whatever size may be desired. lily my novel. construction, an effective rug needle is produced, which will handle fluffy woolen yarns of maximum area in cross section, and by the provision of the front annular abutment or finger piece the operator in manipulatmg the needle is enabled firmly to grasp the handle and to press firn'ily against this front annular bead or wallin the act of forcing the needle forwardly through the rug base, all of which can be done with a minimum amount of fatigue and labor by my novel construction, in addition the needle holder being elongated and having a portionextending well into the handle and the forward portion protruding beyond the forward endof the handle affords suiiicient bearing for the needle under all conditions of use so that the needle can be. readily and rigidly secured in position.
It further consists of other novel features of construction and advantage all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claim.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumenta'llties of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrang ment and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Fig. 1, represents a perspective view of a novel rug needle, embodying my invention.
Fig. 2, represents a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, represents a longitudinal sectional view of the handle of my novel rug needle.
Fig. 4, represents a perspective view of the needle holder in detached position.
Fig. 5, represents a rear endview of Fig. l, showing the set screw in POSIUOIL.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
l designates my novel construction of rug needle, the same comprising the handle portion 2, which has the bore 3 therethrough which is of substantially uniform diameter and merges at its front into the counter bore or seat l and at its rear into the tapering yarn chamber 5, which is largest at its outer or inlet end 6, for a purpose to be hereafter referred to. The forward outer end of the handle is provided with an annular stop or wall 7 against which the fingers of the user abut when the device is in use. 8 designates the needle holder composed preferably of metal and having the front cylindrical portion 9 and the rear shank 10, of lesser diameter, which is provided with the preferably parallel, longitudinally extending flutes 11, which have a drive fit with the wall of the seat 4:. The needle holder 8 has a hole 12 extending longitudinally therethrough, in which is seated the hollow needle 13, having the bevelled end 14. The needle is preferably a relatively thick piece of brass tubing having the yarn passage 15 therethrough, which communicates with the enlarged rear yarn chamber 5. 16 designates a threaded transverse hole in the needle holder for the reception of the set screw 17, whereby the needdle 13 is secured in its desired adjusted positions.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that my novel device comprises but two essential elements, the handle portion 2 of wood or similar material and the metallic needle holder 8, which has a drive fit within the counterbore 4. The yarn employed is inserted through the enlarged end 6, and passed through the tapering yarn chamber 5 into the needle 13. By the provision of the enlarged forwardly tapering yarn cham; ber 5 having its wall converging forwardly. it will be seen that the liability of the yarn to kink or to become obstructed within the handle is entirely obviated. By the provision of the flutes 11, a tight drive fit is obtained between the shank 10 of the needle holder and the wall of the counterbore l, so that the needle holder cannot become dislodged from the handle. The annular head.
or enlargement 7 furnishes a reinforce for the handle at the desired point and reduces to a minimum the liability of the forward end of the handle containing the counterbore splitting when the fluted shank 10 is driven thereinto.
It will be seen from the foregoing that a rigid and durable rug needle is thus produced, and one wherein the liability of the yarn kinking or knotting when in use during its passage through the handle is reduced to a minimum.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of rug needle which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a rug needle comprising, in combination, a shaped handle having a longitudinal opening extending therethrough, said opening being slightly cylindrically enlarged at the tool end and conically enlarged toward the other end from a point near the longitudinal center of the handle, a tool holding member formed with a longitudinal tool opening and a threaded transverse opening intersecting the tool opening, a set screw mounted in said transverse opening, said holding member having longitudinal flutes at one end, said flutes adapted to secure said tool holding member against rotation in the aforesaid cylindrically enlarged opening in the handle, and a hollow needle member adjustably secured in said handle by said set screw and normally so positioned that its inner end is located near the inner end of the conical portion of the longitudinal opening in the handle.
