T. W. BURT r MANDREL PRESS Filed May 29, 1923 Patented Dec. 14, 1926.
UNlTE fl.
TOWNSEND W. BURT, OF HEMPSTEAD, NEW YORK.
MANDREL PRESS.
Application led May 29,
This invention relates to machines for removing gears, wheels and the like from their shafts, or for mounting the same on their shafts.
One of the objects of this invention is to devise a machine which may be used for either of the above named purposes with a minimum amount of changing.
A further object of the invention is to construct a mandrel press which is mor-e simple and quicker to operate than the presses at present in use and at the same time of less cost.
A further object of my invention is to improve upon the type of press shown in my copending application for Mandrel presses, Serial No. 563,610 filed May 25th, 1922.
Referring to the drawings in which what I now consider the preferred form of my inv-ention is shown;
Fig. 1 is a. side elevation of a press constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line '2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. l looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on an enlarged angle through the link connecting the operating lever and transverse bar.
Fig. 5 is a front view of the one piece support, stop and guide to which the operating lever is secured.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the lower workholder, detached.
My apparatus is shown as made up of a stationary support comprising a base 1 and an upright 2 rigidly secured thereto forming a fixed framework or support for the movable elements. The base is shown as secured to the edge of a workbench 3 at one end and as having legs 4 at its other end. To the upright 2 is pivoted one or more transverse bars 5 and 5 having preferably a plurality of apertures 6, 7 and 8 therein. Between said bars a block 9 is pivotally secured as by a bolt 10 passing through apertures 7 in said bars and a corresponding aperture in said block. As shown, the block has secured thereto on opposite sides thereof, two plates 11 and 12 which take over the bars 5 and 5 (see Fig. 2). In the block is adjustably secured the work engaging member. As shown said member is in the form of a rod 13 threaded in the block 9 and havErw 192B. serial No. 642,192.
ing a handle 14 by which it may be turned to lower the same against the work.
Preferably a system of parallel linkage is provided to cause the rod 13 to move paralA lel to itself aboutpivot 15 instead of in the are of a circle. Said linkage is shown as a bar 16 hinged to upright 2 and pivotally connected toplate 11 and to a short link 17, whichrin turn is pivoted to bar 5. Said bar 16 is also provided with a plurality of apertures 6', 7 and 8 corresponding to apertures 6, 7 and 8 in bars 5 and 5', so that the block 9 may be placed in any of these posi tions to vary the leverage or to suit the shape of the work.
Adjacent the outer end of bars 5 and 5', a link 47 is pivoted thereto. Pivoted to the lower end of the link at 18 is the operating lever 19, which may be forked atV its lower end as shown. The operating lever, in turn, is pivoted by a bolt 21 to ears 22 ona plate 23 secured to the base 1. Saidplate may also have struck up therefrom ears 24 which act as a guide for link 47 (Fig. 4) and also as a stop to limit the upward movement of lever 19.
The workholder proper is shown as formed of a plate 25 having a central aperture 25 and turned up at opposite edges to form guides 26, 27 which take over parallel'bars 28,29 forming the base Fig. 3). The workholder may also be provided with a second base or plate 30 adjustably supported by a pin or pins 31 extending through any pair of a plurality of apertures 32 in parallel bars 33, 34. Said base 30 is also provided with a central aperture 35 which may be closed by pivoted strip 36. Slots 37 and 38 are shown in the base through which bars 33 and 34 pass.
To use my mandrel press for removing a shaft from a gear (for example) the gear is placed 0n plate 25 with the shaft extending through aperture 25. After adjusting the plate 25 to a position under rod 13 and adjusting the rod to engage the gear shaft, the operating lever is lowered to remove the shaft. By means of the long lever arm of lever 19 multiplied by the leverage of bar 5, 5', a very powerful pressure may be exerted with a minimum exertion on the part of the operator.
llllhenusing the press toap ly a shaft to a gear, the shaft may be placed on the lower werk helder 30 with the aperture closed by strip 36 so that the shaft extends upwardly through aperture-25 Iand' is guided thereby. In `this ease, -the lo'We-r end oi'rod 13 is provided with a bell-mouthed work engaging member 40. To press thegear -onthe shaft, it is placed on the top of the shaft and rod 13 With member 40 attachedv thereto ot, "`but I desire 'to have*` it Aunderstood 'that the apparatus sho'ivn is only illi'i'strative and that'the operation* can be Carried "out by othermeans. Also, whileit isfdesigned'to use the various features and elements in the eo'mbinationf and relations described, some ot these maybe altered and others" omittedivithout' interfering with the more general' results outlined, :and vthe invention 'eXten'dsto' such alterations. y
Having` yherein Adescribed my invention what I elaimland' desire to` seeure by Letters Patent' is: v
l. a press, the combina' tion with a Workholder-"and a 'Workfen'ga-ging `me`1nber, a transversely' extending' bar supportino" said member, a support onivhi'eh'said bar'is pivoted 'adjacent 011e`end,a link pivot'ed to' said bar at a point-spaeefdtroni said' supper@ a base,"a platefs'eeiiretl to said base and having two pairs'oi 'ii'pturne'd ears,4 and anV operating lever pivoted between one pair ot' Vsaid ears'and to'said link. 'the other pair of said ears' serving as'v a `guide for said link.
2L-In 'a press, a support,` a substantially horizontal bai" pivoted thereon, a member tioned`adjaeent"tliereto, a transversely extending bar supporting` said member, al support on 'which saidV bar isE pivoted A'adjacent `one end, linl'rage piydted to'lsaid supporting member and bai for causing the' member to move parallel ,to itself, a link pivoted' to Lsaid bar't a point spaced rom'rsaid support,
