FLKGPOLE Ann DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application filed September 30, 1924. Serial No. 740,731.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a flag pole and display device wherein a pole capable of supporting a plurality of flag staffs at its upper end, embodies a plurality of radial arms carried by hub portions that are rotatable with respect to the flag pole with fan blades or propellers carried by the outer ends of the radial arms.
With the above and other objectsin view as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a flag pole and display device constructed in accordance with the present invention showing the flag pole removably supported upon a base structure or span,
Figure 2 is a top plan View with the upper end of the pole shown in section,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the manner of mountingthe radial arms upon the flag pole and with the lower end of the pole constructed for mounting in a stand,
Fi ure 4 is a detail sectional view similar to Fig. 3 showing a carrying staff for the o e, p Figure 5 is a top plan view of one of the fan wheel supporting frames for the outer ends of the radial arms,
Figure 6 is a detail view, showing the outer end of one of the radial arms with the fan wheel supporting frame secured thereto, and
Figure 7 is a detail view, partly in section showing the socket formation at the upper end of the stand to receive the lower end of the fla .pole. v
In t e form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the flag pole embodies an upper mam section 1 that is outwardly flared at 1ts lower end as at 2 while a bearing shaft 3,
carrying an outwardly directed annularflangec t atitsup er end, ha am flange e enlarged end" 12* of .A plurality of fan wheel supporting, a
dial, arms are" associated "with the shaft 3, the upper set of radlal arms being inclined upwardly, the lower set of radial arms being inclined downwardly, while the intermediate set of arms is directed outwardly in a horizontal plane. The upper upwardly inclined arms 6 are carried by a central hub 7 that is jo-urnaled on the shaft 3, while the intermediate horizontal radial arms 8 are carried by a central hub 9 also journaled on said shaft, while a spacing collar 10 is interposed between the hub portions 7 and 9 with antifriction bearing balls 11 positioned as illustrated in Fig. 3. The lower downwardly inclined radial arms 12 are carried by a hub 13 that is journaled on the shaft 3 and a spacing collar 14; is positioned between the hub portions 9 and 13 with the ball bearings 11 for these hub portions arranged as illustrated.
A block 15 having a lower tapering end 16 is formed with a socket 17 in its upper end that receives the cup-shaped bearing 18, the hearing 18 receiving the lower end of the shaft 3 and carrying an outwardly directed flange 19 that is anchored as at 20 to the upper end of the block 15 while the extreme upper end of the bearing 18 carries an outwardly directed flange 21 engaging the lower face of the hub portion 13 and having ball bearings positioned therebetween. An end thrust bearing ball .22 is positioned between the lower end of the shaft 3 and the bottom wall of the cup-shaped bearing 18. The stand for the flag pole includes a central bearing 23 having a conical socket in its upper end for the reception of the lower conical end 16 of the block 15, the bearing 23 being carried by the upper ends of supporting legs 24 that are suitably braced as at 25. When it is desired to increase the length of the flag pole, the cup-shaped bearing 18 is removed, and the carrying staff or pipe 26, illustrated in Fig. 4 is substituted for the bearing 18, and the upper end of the pipe 26 is outwardly flanged as at 21 for engaging the hub portion 13 of the lower set of radial arms.
A. lurality of fan Wheels or propellers is associated with the outer end of each radial arm, the mounting thereof including a frame having acentral hub 27 carrying fourequidistantly spaced radial arms '28, the hub '27 being provided with a rectangularbore 29 that is received on the rectangularpin pro je'ction 30 at the outer end of the radial arms as shown in Flgs. 5 and 6 and retained in posltion thereon by thecotter pins 31.
' hub portion 33 of .a frame having four equidistantly spaced radial arms 34 with crossed fan blades '35 secured to the outer ends thereof as at36.
The upper end of the pole 1 may be provided with any number of sockets to receive the staffs 37 of flangs, pennants or the like.
The hub portions ofthe several radial arms. 6, 8 and 12,-being freely rotatable upon the shaft 3, said hub portions carrying the arms are partially rotated on the shaft during a change in direction of air current contacting the several fan blades.
While there .are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. In the herein described device, comprisin a pole, a plurality of hub portions rotatable on the pole, radial arms carried by the hub portions, frame members embodying radial legs non-rotatably carried by the outer ends of the radial arms, crossed arms at the outer ends of the legs, fan blades at the ends of the crossed arm s, saidpole including a shaft section upon which the hub portions are journalled, anti-friction de vices interposed between the hub portions, a supporting stand, ablock rotatably supporting the lower end of the shaft 'removably mounted in the stand, and a cup-shaped bearing interposed between the block and shaft.- Y
2. In the herein described device, comprising a pole, a plurality of hub portions rotatable on the pole, radial arms carried by the hub portions, frame members embodying radial legs non-rotatab ly carried by the outer ends of the radial arms, crossed arms at the outer ends of the legs, fan blades at the ends of the crossed arms, said pole including a shaft section upon which the hub portions are journalled, anti'friction. 'devices interposed between the hub portions, a supporting stand, a block rotatably supporting the lower end of the shaft section and removably mounted in the stand, a cupshaped bearing interposed between the block and shaft, and the upper end of the pole being constructed to sup ort flag staffs.
In testimony whereof afiiz t my signature.
