PROTECTING DEVICE FOR CARBIDE FEEDERS.

This invention relates to a carbide feed device for acetylene generators in which a revolving feed drum is used which has cells designed to receive the carbide from an upper carbide container. In order to ensure an easy revolving of the feed drum this drum is loaded by the carbide in such a manner, that the weight of the carbide assists the revolving movement of the feed drum which is generally controlled by the ascending and descending collector bell of the gas holder the movement of said collector bell being controlled by the gas pressure in said gas holder. With carbide feeding devices of this type it may happen that the drum is revolved only by the weight of the carbide so that larger quantities of carbide are thrown into the generating water than is admissible.
According to this invention the weight of the carbide is utilized in such a manner that an exact and securely limited movement of the drum is ensured.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood I shall hereinafter describe the invention with reference to the form of construction shown by way of example on the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figs. 2 and 2 show diagrammatically the gas generator with gas holder or reservoir with the collector bell, the feeding drum in the gas generator being shown in the two extreme positions. Fig. 2 shows only the gas generator the feeding drum being in the medium position.

In the top 0 of an acetylene generator 9' the carbide container on is arranged, the feed hopper a of which terminates over the feed drum a. The drum a is composed of a number of cells. In order to make the one sided load upon the feed drum a by the carbide as great as possible and to prevent the jamming of lumps of carbide the feed drum is partly enclosed by a guard h fixed upon the outflow n of the carbide container m. This guard h prevents further the premature filling of the cells with carbide and also the jamming of carbide lumps between the walls of the cells and the outflow n. larged end 6 (Fig. 2) of this lever b has an oblong slot Z by means of which it is mounted upon the shaft 19. The weighted lever b, g is con trolled by a pull cable 8 from the collector bell of the gas holder, said cable raising by means of a collar 71 of a rod j the lever b when the collector bell of the gas holder sinks owing to the decreasing pressure in the gas holder. Upon the shaft p of the feed drum a a ratchet e is keyed with which engages a pawl c of the lever 6. Between the lever b and the outer wall of the top 0 of the generator a second ratchet g is arranged upon shaft 2) with Which engages a pawl d pivotable around a pin fixed in the wall of top 0.
The device operates as follows z- If the collector bell of the gas holder sinks owing to the decreasing gas pressure it exerts a pull upon the cable 8 and the lever b is raised, so that it adopts the position shown in Fig. 2, as the weight of the part of the lever b at theright of the collar 2' is greater than that of the counterweight g. The oblong slot Z rests with its upper end upon shaft p. The extension f has released the pawl 03 so that it engages with the ratchet g and prevents the feed drum a from revolving under the action of the weight of the carbide.
When the collector bell of the gas .holder ascends owing to the increasing pressure in said holder the cable 8 gets slack and the lever 6 being released is lowered so that its pawl 0 acts upon the outer ratchet e and the oblong slot Z of the inner end 6 shifts upon. the shaft 3). The extension f of the inner end being thus raised acts upon the pawl (Z and withdraws the same from the ratchet 9. As the feed drum a is thus released it begins to revolve and the lever Z) is further lowered; The inner end 6 of the lever swings somewhat around shaft 10 so that the extension f releases the pawl 03 which ongages again with the inner ratchet g and stops the feed drum.
The mechanism for operating the drum and for stopping the same may be used also in connection with other feed devices.
I claim:
A protecting device for carbide feeders comprising in combination with the collector bell of a gas holder, at carbide container with feed hopper, a carbide drun'i COlll'POSGCl of separate cells, a shaft on which said drum is keyed, a ratchet wheel keyed on the said shaft inside the carbide container, a ratchet Wheel keyed on said shaft outside the carbide container, a counterweighted lever adapted to be controlled from the collector bell ofla'gas holder, an enlarged inner end of said lever having an ablong slot, an upwardly directed extension on said inner end of the lever, a pawl pivotally fixed upon the outer end of said lever and engaging with said outer ratchet wheel to revolve said drum when said lever drops, and a second pawl pivotally fixed to the top of the generator engaging with said inner ratchet wheel and designedto lock the drain when the le Ve'r is in the lifted position so that the drum cannot be revolved by the action of the weight of the carbide alone, said second pawl being lifted out 01" said inner ratchet wheel by said extension or the inner end of the lever when said lever begins to drop.
