This invention relates to flag poles and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind constructed and operating in a manner whereby a flag entangled therearound may be readily and conveniently unfolded or unfurled without requiring the services of a steeple climber.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind whereby the flag may be raised or lowered by a person under cover and wherein provision is made to maintain the flag extended when the atmosphere is still or during a rain or snow storm.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved flag pole whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a flag pole constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view partly in section and partly in elevation of the upper portion of the device as illustrated in Figure 1; it
Figure 3 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4; is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure ,5 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating in detail the portion of the means herein employed for raising the flag staff associated with the pole;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in top plan showing the coaction between the guide rail and coacting yoke;
Figure 7 is a view in elevation with a portion broken away of the flag staff proper;
Figure 8 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a further embodiment of my invention;

ings, P denotes a metallic pole of desired length and which is mounted upon a circular base 1. The base 1 is supported at its axial center for rotary movement, as at 2. The base 1 constitutes a cop; wheel meshing with a cog wheel 3 carried by the vertically disposed shaft 1. The upper portion of the shaft 4 carries a hand wheel 5 whereby the base 1 together with the pole P may be readily and conveniently rotated, particularly when it is desired to unfurl a flag which may be tangled with the pole or the staff S associated therewith.
The upper and lower portions of the pole P have rot-atably supported therein pulleys 6 and 'Z around which is directed an endless chain 8. The lower pulley 7 is carried by a shaft 9 extending beyond opposite sides of the pole P and to each extended portion is fixed a hand wheel 10 whereby the chain 8 may be caused to move in either direction as desired.
Arranged between the stretches of the chain 8 and extending substantially the entire distance between the pullys 6 and 7 is a guide rod or rail 11 disposed downwardly on a predeterminedincline the upper portion of said rod or rail being positioned closely adjacent an elongated slot or' opening 1% pro vided in a wall of the pole. This rod or rail 11v at points opposed to the opening 14 is provided therealong with a series of spaced and outwardly disposed protuberances or knobs 15 for a purpose to' be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
Disposed through a link of the chain 8 is a shank 16 terminating in a yoke 17 straddling the rod or rail 11, the arms ofsuch yoke being disposed on such curvature to provide what may be termed an elongated slot or opening", as particularly illustrated. in
F igure 6. whereby the shank 16 will be permitted to have swinging movement lengthwise of the rod or rail 11 upon movement of the chain 8 when the base portion of the yoke 17 comes into contact with a protuberance or knob 15.
The outer end portion of the shank 16 constitutes a socket 18 which snugly receives the lower or butt end portion of the staff S. This staff S preferably constitutes a cane of bamboo through the center of which is disposed a metallic rod 19. Thebutt end portion of the staff S is surrounded by a ferrule m 20 of leather or kindred material whereby it is assured that the butt end portion of the staff S will have a tight fit within the socket 18. The outer portion of the staff S is adapted to have engaged therewith in any preferred manner the flag F.
hen the flag is lowered the staff S will be in the position illustrated in Figure l and as the stretch of the chain 8 adiacnt to the portion of the wall of the pole having the opening l-i moves upwardlv, the Shank 16 with the applied staff S will nave a tendency to swing upwardly. and which movement is furtherfl .cilitated when the inner portion of the yol-ze 17 comes into contact with a protuberance or knob 15. As this stretch of the chain 8 continues to move, the yoke 17 will readily pass over such protuberances or knobs unti the said staff S is in substantially a vertical position. hen it is desired to lower the flag the foregoing operation will be reversed.
In the event the flag, due to the changes in the direction of the wind or from other causes, should wrap around the staff S, or become otherwise entangled therewith, the same may be readily unfolded by imparting proper rotation to the pole P. Furthermore, when desired, the pole P may be readily rotated to assure the flag when unfurled flying straight ahead under the action of the wind.
In Figure 8, 1 illustrate an embodiment of my invention wherein the chain 8 carries an outstanding socket member 21 substantially at right angles to the chain 8 and in which is snugly engaged the butt end portion of the horizontally disposed staff" S. This staff S is adapted'to be suitably engaged with the upper marginal portion of the flag F while the lower inner corner of such flag is suitably tied, as at 22, to the chain 8.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figure 9, the staff S" is of substantially the same structure as the staff S except that it has engaged with its upper portion an angular coupling 23 providing a mounting for the horizontally disposed staff extension 24. This staff extension 24 is adapted to be suitably connected with the upper marginal portion of the flag F and provides means to maintain said flag extended when there is no wind or during a rain or snow storm,
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a flag pole constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly wel adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to sliding engagementbe understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in p act-ice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. in QOi'lllJlllill'lOD, a hollow flag pole having an elongated opening in the wall thereof, a member arranged wi hin the pole and travc ing lengthwise of the pole, a flag stall engageable with the member, and means coacting with said snail for swinging the Etalf upwardly or downwardly upon movement of the member in one direction.
2. in combination, a hollow flag pole having an elongated opening in the wall thereof, an endless chain arranged within the pole and traveling lengthwise of the pole, a flag staff engag'aole with the chain, and means within the pole coacting with said staff for swinging the staff upwardly or downwardly upon movement of the chain in one direction. 7

In combination, a hollow flag pole hav ing an elongatco opening in the wall thereof, a member arranged within the pole and travcling lengthwise of the pole, means for moving said men'iber in either direction within the pole, and a flag staff operatively engaged through the opening with the member.
