COMBINED OIL EXTRACTOR AND CONDENSATE RECEIVER.
Application filed March 26, 1326. Serial No. 97,812.
This invention relates to combined oil extractors and condensate receivers.
It is the object of the invention to provide an apparatus for receiving the exhaust steam of engines or any steam contaminated by lubricating or other oil, and to remove theimpurities and to also collect in said apparatus any condensed portion of said steam. I 1

In these views the reference character 1 designates adrum or casing former prefen" ably of boiler plate or sheet metal, and having pipes 2 and 3 opening substantially centrally thereinto through its top and bottom for respectively delivering contaminated steamyand for withdrawing purified steam. The cylindrical side wall of the drum 1 may be extended above said drum, as shown in Figure 1, to. form a tank 3 surrounding the pipe 3 containing water to be heated by the steam rising through the pipe 3.
lVithin the drum 1 and secured to the bottom thereof in spaced relation to its side wall and top is an inner drum 4 concentric with the outer drum, and a partition 5 horizontally arranged in said inner drum divides the same into upper and lowersteam expansion compartments. 6 designates an extension .of the inlet pipe 2 which passes through the lower compartment of the inner drum, and opens into the upper compartment thereof, thus adapting the incoming steam to initially enter said upper chamber. The partition 5 is formed with plurality of ports 7 through which the steam discharges from the upper to the lower chamber of the inner drum, and preferably collars 8 are secured to the under side of said partition surrounding the openings 7, said collars'projecting at their lower ends into the upper ends of larger collars 9 secured to the floor of the drum 1. The steam escaping downwardly through the collars 8 from the upper to the lower compartment of the inner drum, is required to-reverse its direction of flow in passing between the collars 8 and 9 into the lower compartment, and there results from this reversal of flow, a tendency to throw out of suspension any oil or water that may be entrained by the steam. The liquids thus separated, escape fromthe collars 9 through a series of openings 10in the lower portions of said collars to the main area ofthe lower compartment.
From the lower compartment of the inner drum, the steam escapes to the annular space surrounding the inner drum through a circularseries of ports 11 in the wall of the inner drum, and from said space, the steam flows across the top of the inner drum to the outlet pipe 3.
It is preferred to secure to the outer portion of the partition 5 the depending ring 11 spaced at its lower end from the bottom of the drums 1 and 4t, and arranged between the outer wall of the drum 4 andthe series of collars 8 and 9. This bafiie ring is encountered by the steam outwardly flowing between the collars 8 and 9 and deflects the flow of such steam downwardly. As the direction of this flow is thus abruptly changed, a further tendency is created to deposit on the wall of said baffle member any condensed globules of water or oil that carried by the steam.
Expansion of the steam in the outer portion of thedrum 1 tends to precipitate out any condensate still carried by the steam. 12 designates an outlet pipe communicating with the drum 1 through the bottom thereof for carrying off water of condensation, and, 13 indicates anoil outlet pipe which is c'on nected with the lower compartment ,Q of the inner drum through the floor thereof,the, oil

One or more vacuum breakers, each comprising a pipe 14: passing through the cylindrical wall of the drum,v and a normally closed check valve '15 upon the outer end of said pipe, serve to admit outside air to the drum, in case the pressure therein becomes sub-atmospheric. In order that said vacuum breakers may act immediately to overcome any vacuum tendency arising either in the outer or inner drum, the pipes H are arranged in thehorizontal plane o1 the ports 11 and have their inner ends only a slight distance from said ports.
In the event that the pipe 13 becomes clogged with sediment ortor any other reasoniails to properly function, the level of oil and water in the bottom portion of the apparatus will riseuntil an overflow occurs through the ports 11 into the outer drum, the overflowing liquit s discharging from the outer drum by way of the pipe 12. Also if the pipe 12 for any reason becomes blocked, the resulting accumulationof water of condensationin the outer drum will overflow through the ports 11 into the inner drum, and will be carried oii by the oil outlet pipe 13., Thus, it to be noted that the arrangement prevents any overflow ofthe liquids into the steam-supply pipe, Itis highly essential to avoid such an overflow since if the pipe leads from theexhaust ports of engines as is usually the case, such liquids may find entrance to the engine cylinders anaemia cracking or bursting of said cylinders. It is tobe understood that theentire space within the drums l and t provides for an expansion of the steam entering the apparatus and a retardation of the steam velocity, and that such expansion and retardation are useful in facilitating precipitation of any impurities carried by the steam.

8. In a device of the character described.
a drum having a steam outlet, a smaller drum Within the first named drum, means for delivering steam to the inner drum, means Within the inner drum for baffling the steam and separating oil therefrom, the inner drum having an outlet in its peripheral wall for the discharge of steam into the outer drum, and a vacuum breaker mounted in the Wall of the outer drum and opening Within said drum in proximity to said steam outlet of the inner drum.
