D. C. M BRIDE SAMPLE THIEF 2 Sheets Sheet 2 Filed July 20,

DONALD C. MCBRIDE, Ol? LULING TEXAS.
SAIVIIELE THIEF.
Application filed. July 20, 1926. Serial No. 123,783.
This invention relates to a device designed for use in obtaining samples of liquids such as oil or the like, and aims to provide novel means whereby a true sample oi the contents of a container may be had.
Another important object of the inven tion is to provide a device of this character wherein quantities of the liquid will pass into the bottle forming a part of the device, as the bottle moves slowly through the contents of the container, thereby providing a device which will show the various grades of liquid from the surface of the liquid to the bottom of the container in which the liquid is held.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the bottle or con tainer which is dropped into the barrel or tank in which the liquid being tested is held, will automatically rise to the surface-of the fluid, when the device reaches the bottom oi the container in which the liquid is held.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for regulating the quantity of liquid passing into the device, as the device moves to the bottom of the container.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1. is aplan view of a device con structed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device.
Figure 3 is an elevational view otthedevice, the float torminga part oftheinvention being shown in section.
l igure t illustrates the device in its releasing position.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device includes a body portion embodying an upper tubular section 5 and a lower tubular section 6, the section 5 being provided with a cut out portion adjacent to the lower end thereof to accommodate the upper end of the section 6.
As illustrated by Figure 2 or" the drawings the section 6 is provided with an elongated opening 7 in which the finger 8, which is formed at the lower end 01 the upper sec tion 5, operates, to the end that the sections may move towards and away from each other but will be limited in their movements.
Secured to the section 6 a point adjacent to the lower end thereof, is a pivoted arm 9 that extends upwardlyto a point adjacentfto the upper end of the section 5, where it is provided with a right angled end portion fitted in an opening of the locking disk 10 which is eccentrically mounted in the elongated opening 11, formed at the upper end or the upper section 5.
A notch 12 is termed in the periphery of the member 10 and is adapted: to contact with the shoulder of the bottle in which the sample is being taken, to lock the bottle within the tubular body portion, undernormal conditions.
The reference character 13 indicates the float, which is rectangular in formation and to which is secured the cross member. 14 which is substantially wide and which is provided with circular depending flange 15 formed with lugs'16 disposed on the in? ner surface 01 the fiange, and arranged directly opposite to each other. An opening indicated at 17 is provided in the member 14L and is so disposed that a bottle supported within the flange, will have its mouth located directly under the opening to receive liquid that may pass through the opening.
The reference character 18 indicates a swinging closure that may be operated to close the opening l'lit so desired, however the purpose of the closure 18 is to vary the diameter ot the. opening 1? to admit greater or less quantities of liquid to the bottle supported by the device.
The bottle is indicated-by the reference character 19 and has portions of its lip'cu't.
away in orderthat thebottle may be forced upwardly within the circular fiange 15 and slightly rotated, so that the lip will engage the lugs 16 to support the bottle within the flange.
Secured to the u; per section of the tubular body portion is a loop 20 through which a suitable flexible member, not shown, may be passed. and secured, so that a person may control the downward movement of theqdevice as it is passing into the bodyof liquid.
In the operation of the device, the device is positioned in a barrel or container containing, for example, oil, the closure 18 having been set to the proper position to allow the desired amount of liquid to pass into the container.
As the bottle fills with the liquid, it gradually descends until it reaches the bottom of the container, whereupon the weight of the contents of the bottle will cause the lower section 6 of the body portion to move upwardly as it strikes the bottom of the container.
It will be seen that as the section 6 strikes the bottom of the container in which the device has been dropped, the rod 9 moves upwardly, slightly rotating the disk 10 and moving the disk 10 to a position out of the path of travel of the bottle 19, which is secured to the float, through the medium of the member 14.
When the bottle is released, it is obvious that the float 13 will carry the bottle to the surface of the liquid, whereupon the device may be removed and the bottle released from the float.
It will further be seen that as the bottle descends, the diflerent grades of oil will pass into the bottle, giving a true sample of the contents of the container.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a tubular body portion, a float surrounding the upper end of the body portion, a cross member forming a part of the float, a bottle removably secured to the cross member and having an open upper end to receive liquid, means for locking the bottle and float to the body portion, and means for automatically releaslng the float and bottle from the body portion when the device passes to the bot tom of a container.
2. In a device of the character described, a tubular body portion, a float removably secured to the body portion, a bottle carried by the float and having an open upper end to receive material, and means tor automatically releasing the bottle and float from the body portion.
:3. A mpling device for sampling liquids, said sampling device including a tubular body portion adapted to normally house a bottle, a float surrounding the upper end or" the body portion and bottle, means for normally locking the bottle and float to the body portion, said device adapted to pass through a body of liquid, said bottle adapted to receive liquid as it passes therethrough, and means for automatically releasing the float and bottle from the body portion when the device passes to the bottom of the liquid.
4. A sampling device for sampling liquids, including a float, a body portion, a bottle within the body portion, means for locking the float, bottle and body portion together, means for releasing the float and bottle from the body portion, when the device passes to the bottom of a container containing liquid, and said float adapted to carry the bottle to the surface 01 the liquid.
5. A sampling device for sampling liquids, including a body portion, a float surrounding the upper end of the body portion, a container having an open upper end, said container adapted to fill with liquid as it passes through a body of liquid, and 1116M]?! for releasing the container and float from the body portion, and said float adapted to carry the container and its contents to the liquid level in which the device has been dropped.
6. A sampling device for sampling liquids, including a sectional body portion, a bottle adapted to be normally held within the body portion, a locking member at the upper end of the body portion and adapted to cooperate with the bottle to hold the bottle within the body portion, means connected with the lower section of the body portion to operate the locking member, to release the bottle, and float, and said float adapted to carry the bottle to the liquid level in which the device has been dropped.
7. A sampling device for sampling liquids, including a float, a supporting member connected with the float, a bottle ren'iovably secured to the supporting member, said supporting member having an opening to register with the mouth of the bottle to permit liquid to pass into the mouth of the bottle, means for regulating the size of the opening to vary the quantity of liquid passing into the bottle, a body portion in which the bottle is positioned, said body portion adapted to carry the device through the body of liquid, and means for auton'iaticaily releasing the float and body portion, and said float adapted to carr the bottle and its contents to the liquid level.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto atlizred my signature.
DONALD O. MCBRIDE.
