SEOTIONAL LIP TILE.
Application filed March 19, 1925. Serial Ne. 16 654 The present invention relates to sheet glass rents and radiated heat which otherwise apparatus, and has particular reference to would strike the sheet The heat currents or a new type of lp-tile for use in connection rays come from the tank :turnace 8 on one therewth, side ot the sheet and from below the pot 7 An important object of the invention is to .in the chamber 14. The entire pot is heated 60 provide a lip-tile tor use in connection with by means of burners disposed in the chamber sheet glass apparatus, the said lip-tile be- 14. In the Colburn patent the lip-tiles are ing so construeted that a portion thereot arranged approximately as shown in Fig. 1, (zan be replaced without interfering with but in the Colburn patent and in all'of the the normal operation of the said machine. machines used under the Colburn patent, 05
Another object of the invention is to proeach lip-tilehas been oonstru-cted as a single vide a lip-tile ot this' nature comprising a unit. The lip-'tiles are supported from above plurality ot parts whereby the main part or by means e ot' a pipe or cable extending i body portion ot the lip-tile can be mount'ed through a suitable aperture formed in a por 151 in position, other parts ot the tile being so astion thereof. The Colburn patent also disclosed the use, Thelip 16 may be provided with a pluot cover-tiles or socalled lip-tiles to protect rality of apertures 24 in which may be inthe sheet 5 in its Vertical run from heat curserted prongs 25 carried by a grapple 26 110 indicated in dotted lines. The grapple 26 may be. raised, thus disengagng the lip 16 from the body portion 15. In this manner the lip may very easily be replaced when desired. 'The lip portion 16 may be formed in either three or tour sections so that they may be slipped onto the body portions and slipped off with ease. In this instance the grapple 26 may be disposed with.
Figs. 3 and l show a slightly modified construction, but it will be seen that the lip portion 27 has engagement with the body portion 28 similar to the type of tiles shown in Fig. 1.
Although the lip tiles have been modified to tacilitate removal of the lip portions, it is to he understood .that they can be arched to .function exactly as the present type of .tiles in machines constructed in accordance with the Colburn process. It is seldoin that the cracks or breaks begin in the body portions ot the tiles, butas a rule the crack or other fracture begins in the lip portion and extends through the body. This 'fact is taken advantage of in the present invention by separating the lip and the body and making it possible to easily and quickly replace a lip with a minimum of expense and time.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the pre'erred embodiment ot the same, and .that various changes in the shape, size. and .arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Claim's:-
1. In sheet glass apparatus, means for drawing a sheet from a mass of molten glass, and a lip-tile arranged above the molten glass and comprising a body portion and a removable lip portion.
2. In combination with a sheet drawing apparatus, of a lip-tile comprising a body' gagement.
e i. In combination with a sheet drawing apparatus, of a lip-tile comprising a body portion having a groove therein and a lip portion having means adapted to be received within said groove.,
5. In combination with a sheet drawing apparatus, of a sectional lip-tile comprii ing a body portion and a lip portion, the body portion having a groove therein and the lip portion carrying a tongue adapted to be received in the said groove whereby the lip may be supported in operative position. i
6. In combination with a sheet drawing appara'tus of a lip-tile comprising a sta- .tionary body portion and a removable lip portion.
7. In combination with a sheet drawing apparatus, of a lip-tile comprising a stationary body portion and a removable lip portion, the body having a groove therein and the lip carrying -a ton 'ue adapted to be received in the said groove, and an abutment carried by the body and engaging the lip.
