UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL F-ORTIN. OF SCI-IENECTADY. NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
ELECTRICAL CON NECTER.
Application filed October 19, 1921. Serial No. 508.655.
My present invention relates to electrical connerters. particularly-to connectersof the type which may be readily attached and detached from a conductor. v
6 One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient connecterfor making an electrical connection between two conductors whereby a tightening of a single member will simultaneously secure both (on- 1 ductors to be connected to the connecting device A further object of my invention is to provide such a device which will .be adapted to connect two conductors of different size or cross-section. I la The novel features which I believe to be characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims,
my invention itself, however, both as to its organizationan'd method of operation will best be understood by reference to the following description taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawing in which Fig members 1 and 2 which are substantiallyparalleltoeach other. These parallel portions are connected by two diverging portions 3 and 4 and an intermediate ,portion 5, which extends at substantially right angles :1) to the members 1 and 2. A bolt 6 which together with thumb nut 7 forms a binding post, extends through an opening in the intermediate portion 5 of the connecter. This bolt has a T-shaped head 8 which is inserted in the bifurcations of the two jaw members 1 and 2. The head 8 of the bolt isprovided with inclined surfaces 9 and 10, which coact with the diverging portions 3 and 4 of the connecter so that when the thumb nut 7 is tightened to secure the conductor 11 to the connecter the jaw members 1 and 2 are pressed toward each other. As a result these aw members are caused to grip the conductor 12 which is interposed between them. In other words, by tightening the thumb nut 7 the conductors 11 and 12 aresimultaneously secured to the connecter. I have indicated the conductor Has a flat braided conductor which is secured to a terminal 13, this terminal being preferably merely conductor.
pinched upon the conductor to secure it thereto. The terminal 13is flared ouhvardly at 14 and this outwardly flared portion It prevents the terminal from rotating when the thumb nut 7 is tightened. While I have; illustrated my invention as employed for connecting a comparatively small wire with a flat conductor of larger cross section it is apparent that by suitable modification of the shape of different portions of the connecter, it may be adapted to I form a reliable electrical connection between two conductors of any shape or cross-section jdesired without departing from the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States; is
1. An electrical connecter comprising-a gripping member having two substantiallv parallel port-ions directly opposite each scope 'of my invention as set forth in the other, two diverging portions and a portion connecting said diverging portions, and a bolt extending through said connectin portion for securing an-electrical conductor thereto, the head of said bolt being adapted to bear against said diverging portionsiand thereby press the parallel portions toward each other to cause them to grip an interposed conductor.
'QLAn electrical connector comprising a grippinglnember having two substantially parallel bifurcated portions. two diverging portions and aportlon connecting sa d diverging portions and a "T-headed bolt eX- 1w tending through said connecting portion, the head of said'bolt being adapted to coact; with the diverging portions and thereby press the parallel portions toward each other to cause them to grip an interposed cs 3. An electrical connecter comprising a gripping member havin two substantiallr parallel bifurcated portions, two diverging portions and a portion connecting said dimu verging portions and a T-hcaded bolt extending through said connecting portion. the head of said bolt being inserted in the bifurcations of said parallel members and being adapted to coact with the diverging 1 portions of the ripping member to press the parallel portions toward .each other to cause them to grip an interposed conductor.
4. An electrical connecter-comprising a gripping member having two substantially U0 parallel bifurcated portions, two diverging portions and a portion connecting said diverging portions and a T-headed bolt extending through said connecting portion, the head of said bolt being adapted to coact with the diverging portions to press the parallel portions toward each other to cause them to grip an interposed conductor, said bolt also serving asa binding post for securing a conductor to said gripping member.
5. An electrical connecter comprising a pair of opposing bifurcated jaw members,
an intermediate member connecting saidsure for pressing said jaw members together jaw members and a T-headed bolt extending through said intermediate member, the head of said bolt being inserted in the bifurcations of said jaw members and being adapted to exert a pressure for pressingjsaid jaw members together to grip an interposed conductor.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of October, 1921.
