C-OMBINED CANOPY, SHADE HOLDER, AND OUTLET BOX.

This invention relates to electric light fixtures of that type comprising a canopy open at one end and provided at said end with means for supporting a reflector, or lamp shape, and a lamp socket enclosed within the canopy and to which the lamp is secur d.

In the installation of this type of fixture it is usual to employ an outlet box to which the canopy is secured and which is provided with openings through which the circuit wires are led. Eluch an installation, therefore, requires both the outlet box and the canopy.

It is one of the objects of my present invention to provide a device which functions both as a canopy and an outlet box, thus dispensing with the necessity of employing two separate pieces in completing an installation.

A device embodying iy invention coinprises a member having the general shape of the .canopy used in electric lighting fixtures of the above type and formed at its open end with means for supporting the reflector or lamp shade and also provided with means situated within it and between its ends for supporting the lamp socket and having beyond the lamp socket-supporting means a chamber or space performing the function of the outlet box, in that it is provided with an opening or openings through which the circuit wires may enter said chamber, and also provided with an opening through which access may be had to the wires, said latter opening being large enough to provide for making any necessary connections between the circuit wires and the terminals of the lamp socket. With my invention, therefore the use of both the outlet box and a canopy is unnecessary as I have provided in one element a combined canopy and outlet box which performs the functions of both of these elements. and which constitutes a holder for the reflector or shade, a canopy :tor enclosing and supporting the lamp socket and an outlet box to provide for making any necessary connections between the circuit wires and the lamp terminals.

In order to give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described after which the novel feaes will be. poin u n h ppen e aims.-

The combined outlet box, shade holder and canopy is indicate; generally at 1 and it may be made of cast metal or sheet metal pressed into shape as desired. The construetion illustrated is a cast metal cons-tr tion.

Thedevice is open at one end and its open end is provided with means for supporting the usual reflector 2. While the reflector may be supported in any suitable way I have herein shown a construction in which the neck 8 of the reflector is screw-threaded intoa screw-threaded sl eve or connection 4': that in turn is received within the mouth of the element 1 and is secured thereto preferably by being crimped or spun over the bead 5 at the edge of the canopy.

The lamp socket 6, which is provided with the usual lamp socket terminals. is situated within the canopy member 1 as usual in devices of this sort, but in my present invention I have constructed the member 1 so that the support for the lamp socket is situated between the ends thereof so that a space or chamber 9 is provided at the upper end of: the canopy which is of sufiicient size to function as an outlet box, in that it is large enough to provide for the making of any necessary connection. between the circuit wires and the leads to the lamp terminals. The canopy member 1 is provided on its interior with some suitable means for support ing the lamp socket 6 and as one simple construction adapted for this purpose I have illustrated two lugs 10 which extend inwardly from the walls of the canopy and to which the socket 6 may be secured by means of screws 11. The lugs are of such a length that the space 12 between the ends thereof is ample to accommodate the wires 13 lead ing to the lamp socket. The portion of the member 1 above the socket-supporting means, which is herein shown as lugs 10, is termed with one or more openings 14. through which the lead wires 23 may be led and. hese openings are preferably screwthreaded to receive pipes or conduits 15 that contain the. wires 23. In addition to the openings 14 the canopy is provided with another opening 16 which may either be in the end as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or in the side as shown in Fig. 3. This opening 16 is for the purpose of providing access to the chamber 9 for the purpose of making any necessary electrical connections between the circuit wires and the lamp terminals. It oesired this opening 16 may be provided with a removable plug 17 by which 1!, ma be closed but which is removable when access to the chamber 9 is desired.

The canopy n ay be supported in any suit able way. in Fig. 1 I have shown the plug 1? as having ears 18 to receive attaching screws or bolts by which the canopy may be secured to a beam or other support. In Fig. 3 the canopy is shown as having lugs 19 castintegral therewith by which it may be secured to any support.

A device embodying my invention has the advantage that while it costs practically no more than the ordinary canopy yet it performs the function of both the outlet box and canopy and thus avoids the expense incident to providing both an outlet box and a canopy as separate pieces.

While for the purpose of illustration 1 have shown and described some specific embodiments of the invention I desire to have it understood that the invention is not limited to the constructional details illustrated or to the specific arrangement shown but may be varied within wide limits without departing from the spirit of the invention.

1 claim: 1. A combined canopy and outlet box comprising a body open at one end and having means at said end to support a reflector,

said body having means between its ends to support a lamp socket and being formed beyond the lamp-socket supporting means with a chamber of suiiicient size to function as an outlet box, said body having wire-receiving openings leading into said chamber through which circuit wires extend and also having another opening leading into said chan'iber, which latter opening is separate and independent trom the wire-receiving openings and of a size to provide sutficient access to said chamber to enable wire connections to be made therein without disturbing the wires occupying the wire-receiving openings.

A combined canopy and outlet box comprising a body open at one end and having means at said open end to support a reflector, said body having within it and between its ends lamp-socket supporting means for supporting a lamp socket having terminals, said body also having a chamber beyond the lamp-socket supporting means which i unc tions as an outlet box said body having openings leading to the chamber to receive the circuit wires that are connected to the lamp socket terminals and also having another opening in its side separate from the wirereceiving openings and through which access may be had to said wires without disturbing them and lugs extending from said canopy and by which it may be attached to a support.
