IMPROVED BINDER FOR' GRAIN-HARVESTERS.

.To all 'whom 'it may concern Be it knownv that I, G. A. MGPHETRIDGE, of the city and county of StyLous, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Binder for Grain-Harvesters; and I do hereby declare-that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to vthe letters of .reference marked thereon.
The nature ot my invention consists in the peculiar construction of an automatic binder for grain-harvestcrs.`
Toenablc others'skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fi g. 2 isa side eleva' tion. Fig. 3 is a section ofthe binder, open to receive the grain. Fig. ltis a section of the binder closed, and in the ac t of binding the sheaf.. Fig. 5 is a section, showing the slotted cutting plate. Fig. 6 is a section through the line am; 'in Fig. 4, showing the twister with its conical projections for catching and twisting the ends of the wire together.
In the construction of my invention, in Fig. 1, A is the wheels, and B the shaft or axle; O, the balance-wheel, and l) the shaft; E, the seat; F, the platform; a, thepulleys for carrying the endless belts; b, the endless belts; c, the springseparators G, the springpliers on the upper end ofthe reciprocating arm Gf; d, the friction-wheel n, the, loose pulley on shaft with wheel d; H, gear-wheel on axle B; L, the revolving knife; e, the cam for operating lever j', which operates the reciprocating arm G; g, the lever for operating the wheel d, for operating the binder by means ot' it; It, a pin for operating the connectinglever It', which operates the ejecting-rake ,vwhich is for removing the sheet' when it is bound; j, the spring operating on the said rake, and restoring it to its position to be again caught in the sheat' when being bound; k, the spool to hold the coiled wire.

In Fig. 4, K is the spool with wire coil on it M, stationary arm oz., loose pulley ;'o, movable plate; m', shaft; p, wire-holder; q, the slotted cutting-plate; r, the twister; l, the wire; G, the spring-pliers G', the reciprocatingV arm brought up and' iu the position of binding.
In Fig. 5, q is the slotted cutting-plate; S, the hole for the shaft on to pass through; t, slot fo;l the wire to pass into the twister; u, spring for pressing back the wire, which maybe a straight spring, as at n, or a spiral spring, as .at u.

In the operation of the twister it may be brieiiy described as follows: Vhen the spring-pliers G first come incontact with friction-brake q', the-friction against pulley a on shaft m is just sufficient to revolveth'e twister half round, or until the wire comes in contact with cutting-plate q, when it stops until spring-plier G has been forced fully up toits place, when the friction then becomes sufficient to revolve the twister, which. now
catches the wire from the springpliers G, and
quickly twists the ends together.
In operating the binder, I first wind the wireon spool K, thus forming a coil. I vthen pass it down through the wire-holderp, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. lIt is then caught in the'spriug-plicrs G, as seen in Fig.v 3, and lreaches across the space into which .the grain is reeled bythe endless belts b,

The reciprocating arm'is now caused to rise and approximate .the twister, by means of the cam ev and binding-leverj', until it comes Yin contact with friction-bravkeqQvwith inclined sides, and. pushing the wire before lit, by
mea-nsof the sheet', against the spring u into slot t, until it comes in contact with twister lr, when it is caught by the twister, as shown by dotted lines 2in Fi g. 3. The movable plate1 o is now brought slightly in contactwith loose revolving pulley n, driven by a belt and always lin motion. Themovable plate o, tting on a square portion of Athe `shaft m', causes theshaft to revolve .with it, carrying the'twister half round, until the wire is broughtin contact with the cuttingpinte q, as showri in dotted lines in Fig. 4.
Thereciprocating arml is ,now pressed up 4'by the lever f and cam .e, and forcing the ,spring-pliers G againsttheinclined shoulders ot the wire-holder, which opens slightlythe spring-pliers to relieve the wire; butbefore thewire is relievedit is caught in the twister,

closely. The twister now revolves and cuts oi' the wire in contact with the cutting-plate q. The Wires, being. both caught in the twister on opposite sides, are twisted together until they pass down out of the twister into the by' means of the spring-separators c, which rest on bar o, attached to the spring-pliers G,
and is now ready for a second operation.
