UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, EXPANSIBLE 'roorn GROWN.
Application filed May 1,
My invention has reference to an improvement in the art of dentistry and more par ticularly to an improvement in an expansible tooth crown, whereby the method of fitting the crown to a tooth is greatly improved and the time heretofore required for fitting the crown to the tooth, reduced to a minimum.
In fitting metal tooth crowns to teeth, it is necessary for the crown to have a perfect fit on the tooth. As heretofore done, it required a large number of fittings, to obtain an exact fit of the crown on. the tooth.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of a tooth crown whereby the number of fittings and time heretofore required to fit a crown to a tooth, are reduced to a minimum.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of an expansible tooth crown, said expansible tooth crown having details of construction, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.
Figure 1 is a vertical view of my improved eXpansible tooth crown for a right upper first bicuspid tooth, looking at the mesial surface of the crown.
Figure 2 is a vertical view of the same expansible tooth crown, looking at the buccal surface of the crown.
Figure 3 is a neck view looking down on the upper open end of the crown.
Figure f is a closed end view of the crown looking at the occlusal surface of the crown, and
Figure 5 is'an open end neck view of the crown, similar to Figure 3 and showing the crown expanded a predetermined amount.
In the drawing 6 indicates my improved expansible tooth crown constructed to have an open neck end 7, a mesial surface 8 and an occlusal surface 9; The crown shown is fora right upper first bicuspid tooth. The crown 6 is split at 10 lengthwise of the crown preferably through the mesial surface 8 or that part of the crown and then split over into the center of the occlusal surface 9 or that part of the crown. This split is made through the thickness of the crown or shell, at an angle from the outside in, and forms an outer free edge 11, which laps over the outside mesial surface 8 of the crown and an inner free edge 12 which laps over the inner surface of the crown, as shown in Figures 1, 3 and 5.
1926. Serial No. 106,048.
If the overlapping parts of the crown be' come misplaced in removing the crown from the tooth, the edge 11 is moved to coincide with the marked line on the mesial surface 8 of the crown and the overlapping parts of the crown secured together by solder or other means. The crown, now a perfect fit for the tooth is again placed onto the tooth and cemented to the tooth.
By the use of my improved expansible tooth orowns, the heretofore large numbers of fittings required to fit a crown to a tooth are reduced to a minimum and the large amount of work heretofore necessary on a tooth to be crowned, is also reduced.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new 1. An expansible tooth crown having" a split formed at an angle through the crown, said split forming a free edge overlapping the outside of thecrown and a free edge overlapping the inside of the crown, the split extending into the occlusal surface of the crown, all formed integral, for the purpose as described.
2. An expans'ible tooth crown having a split through the mesial and occlusal parts of the crown, said split being at an angle through the crown and forming overlapping members on the crown, one overlapping member having an edge on the outside of the crown and the other overlapping member having an edge on the inside of the crown, the split extending lengthwise of the crown and then over and into the center of the occlusal surface of the crown, all formed integral, for the purpose as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
