IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR REMOVING WIRE FASTENINGS FROM CORKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,950, dated March 16, 1875; application filed November 5, 1874.

To alt whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. POTTER, of New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Removing Wire Fasteners from Corks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a device for removing the wire fasteners from corks on bottles containing soda, cider, ale, tonic, and invfact from all bottles where the corks are held by wire fasteners, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my device in position as applied to a bottle for removing the wirefastener. Fig. 2 is a side view of 'my device, partly in section.

A represents a handle, of any suitable size and shape, provided at one end with a metal sleeve or ferrule, B, permanently fastened thereon. This sleeve or ferrule B is, at its outer end, formed with two ears or projections, a a, on opposite sides, which ears or projections are rounded on their ends. The sleeve or ferrule thus forms, as it were, a fork, projecting beyond the end of the handle. In this end of the handle is inserted a rod or thick wire, C, which is bent at right angles with the handle, extending to one side betweenthe cars a a, for a suitable distance. The outer end of the rod or wire is bent outward to form a hook, b, as shown in the drawing.

The instrument thus constructed is used in the following manner: G represents a bottle with cork D, and at is the wire fastener used to hold the cork in the bottle. When it is desired to remove the fastener 01 the hook I) of the instrument is placed in the center of the fastener, as shown in Fig. 1, and the ears or projections to 0. against the neck or nose of the bottle. By now pressing down upon the handle A, the cars a form the fulcrum for the rod C to turn on, causing the hook I) to pull the wire fastener off from the cork, and the cork will fly out; or, by the operator placing his finger on the cork, it can be held and removed leisurely.

By the use of this instrument the fasteners can be easily and quickly removed without any injury whatever to the fasteners.

I am aware that a device for removing bottle-stopper fastenings having a forked fulcrum for embracing the neck of the bottle,

and a hook pivoted thereto at some distance from the forked end, is old, and I therefore do not make claim for such device; but

Having fully described 'my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, a device for removing fastenings from corks of bottles, consisting of the rigid hook I), ferrule B, provided with ears or projections a a, and handle A, constructed as described.
