UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THURMAN C. CARTER ANI) ALLEN R. BEST, OF J'OPLIN, MISSOURI, ABSIGNOBS TO THE EAGLEPICHEB LEAD COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
OIL'WELL PLUG.
Application filed September 2, 1924. Serial No. 785,256.
An object of our invention is to provide an oil well plug which is particularly efl'ective for shutting off the bottom of a well when a water sand is reached.
Another object of our invention is to provide a device of this kind which is easily handled and adapted to give positive results.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein, and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which:
- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a plug of our invention.
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic cross section of an oil well having a device of our invention inserted therein prior to shutting off the water sand from the oil sand.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the device of our invention in position sealing the end of the hole.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
ln drilling oil wells, after the drill bit has passed completely through an oil sand it will frequently encounter water and it is therefore necessary to plug the bottom of the hole to preclude the entry of water into the hole. Numerous means have been devisedin an endeavor to accomplish this plug 'ing in an elficient and pertinent manner. The device of our invention comprises an elongated tubular wire mesh container 5 having a closed and reduced lower end 6. In the wire mesh container 5 is contained a mass of lead wool 7 which is to be used for The completed plug 8 is lowered to the bottom of the well and is released after which a tamping tool is repeatedly raised and lowered on to the plug resulting in breaking down and crushing of the wire mesh 5 and forcing the spongy lead wool into all the crevices and irregularities and pores surrounding the bottom of the well. The repeated pointing of the tamping tool consolidates the lead wool to such consistency as to form an effective and permanent seal for the bottom of the hole. It will be apparent that it will be possible to drill the wool out of the hole it it is desired to continue the well to a deeper level. I
What we claim is:
1. A package for use in pluggingwclls comprising" a wire mesh container and a filler of lead wool therefor.
2. A package of the class described comprising a wire container filled with mineral woo..
3. A package of the class described comprising a mass of mineral wool and a wire form giving container retaining the mineral wool in a mass, the container adapted for rupture for releasing the mineral wool, when struck by a tamping implement.
in oil well plug comprising an elongated tubular wire mesh container adapted to disintegrate under blows of a tampinu tool and a filler of spongy lead wool in the container adapted to be tamped into a solid pluginterwoven with the wire of the broken container.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names this 26th day of August,- 1924.
