UNITED STATES ROBERT J. HOWDON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR MARBLEIZING MANTELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,91 1, dated March 16, 1875; application filed December 8, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT J. HoWDoN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented Improvement in Appliances for Marbleizing Mantels, &c., of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a detachable frame, to be fitted and secured to the mantel, so constructed that it will serve to confine the appli cation of the marbleizin g material in the dipping or splashingprocess to such portions only as are designed to be marbleized, and prevent its application to other parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a mantel and my detachable marbleizing guard adjacent thereto. Fig.2 is asectional plan of mantel and detachable guard in place. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the guard and mantel at one side through the lower fastening. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through guard and mantel at the bottom near the central opening for the fire-place of the mantel. Fig. 5 is a vertical central section through mantel and guard.
In the marbleizing ofmantels heretofore the coloring matter is either splashed on or applied to the surface of a body of water, and the mantel is then dipped into the Water bodily, and thus made to take up the coloring mat, ter upon its entire surface. This necessitates the subsequent rubbing off of the coloring matter representing marble in places where no such representation is required. To dispense with this process of cleaning off the sur faces not intended to be marbleized my invention is designed.
A represents the mantel, the spaces a being those intended to be marbleized. I provide a frame, B, of a size corresponding with the mantel and with hinged side wings I), if necessary, to connect with the side columns of the mantel. This frame has openings 1) cutaway in it of a size corresponding with the required spaces to be marbleized, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and is fitted with swivel-fast. enings O which are made to engage behind the mantel, and thus retain the frame in place.
When the detachable frame is in place upon the mantel its face fits snugly against the face of the mantel, and the edges of its aper-,
tures or openings are the boundary-lines for the marbleizing. The mantel is therefore dipped with the frame B attached thereto, and the coloring matter is deposited both upon the spaces a and on the outer surface of the frame B.
When the frame B is removed the marbleizing Will be found properly confined to the spaces a, and the frame B, without cleaning, can be applied to other mantels of same pattern.
It is obvious that the application of frame B for marbleizing Within definite limits is not confined to mantels, but is useful and operative for other articles of manufacture.
I claim- In the process of marbleizing mantels, the
ROBERT J. HOWDON.
