This invention relates to typewriting machines of the fan-fold or continuous billing type, one form of which is shown in the patent to l Vernery & Smith, No. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915, and more particularly to machines for typing selectively on any typing, and, after the typing on one section has been completed, the super osed plies or webs are straightened and a re..ative shifting between such web-plies and carbon-sheets efiected preparatory to using the carbon sheets with the next unused section to be typed. Usually each section typed is severed as soon as the proper association of the carbon-sheets with the next unused section of the web-plies is completed. The webplies may be entirely separate, or may be joined at their edges, as tor example, in fantolded webs, and preferably each ply has thereon a succession of like forms, the forms of the superposed web-plies being in register.
For certain classes of work, it has been found desirable to have a plurality of packs of such web-plies together with interleaved carbons so arranged inthe machine that sub stantially all that is necessary preparatory to typing on any selected pack is to insert the leading end of such pack around the bottom of the platen to the printing line; It has been proposed to arrange such packs in superposed; relation. Under such conditionspthe packs YitQIKl to the platen-frame from guiding devices at different heights,
and it is impossible to straighten certain packs beneath the platen to as great an en tent as others.
An object of the present invention is to provide controlling; means for the packs of web-plies and interleaved carbon sheets such thaih when any packis in position for use;

Provision may be made of means to secure said table to the carriage when any adjustment of the table relatively to the carriage has been eliected.

In order to locate the frame 42 so as to bring the track of a selected carbon-carrier to the proper position with relation to the platen 12, the transverse rod 47 is provided with notches 50, the diameter of which is greater than the width of the slots 48, to receive the portions of the ears 49 at the rear side of the vertical slots 48. These notches 5O serve to position the carbon-carrier tracks definitely with reference to the carriage 27. Pivoted on the ears 49 are hooks or latches 51 to engage the top of said rod 47* to hold it in said slots 48 when placed therein, each of said latches being urged to forward position by a leaf-spring 52, and being provided with a pin or stop 53 to engage the corresponding ear 49 and limit the rearward movement of the latch, and with a finger-piece 54 at the upper end for use in releasing the latch; It will be seen that, upon releasing the latches 51 to permit lifting the rod 47 out of the slots 48, the frame 42 may be swung upwardly about the axis of the rod and. shifted laterally by sliding the rod 45 in the brackets 46 to bring the track of another carbon-carrier 39 into proper position with reference to the platen, to replace the carbon-carrier previously in operative position. The frame 42 may then be swung clownwardly to cause the fingers at the rear of the slots 48 to enter the corresponding notches in the rear side of the rod 4'? and to permit the latches 51 to move into effective position over said rod, and to seat theinselves in notches 55 in the front of the rod 47*. It will be seen that the notches 55 serve to determine the various positions of the frame 42 in the same manner as the pairs of notches 50. v
Each of the carbon-carriers 39 comprises a base 56 provided with grooved rolls 57 to engage the edges of the corresponding rails 4.0, and at opposite sides of each base stepped blocks 58 are provided to support carbon blades or holders 59 to which are attached the rear ends of carbon-sheets 60 interleaved between the plies 61 of packs 62 of web-plies fed from suitable sources of supply over a rear guide 63 supported in upward extensions of the brackets 44. To maintain such packs in suitable position with reference to the car bon-carriers 39, provision may be made of side gages 64 adjustable along the guide 63. When not in use, the packs )2 with their interleaved carbons are folded back over the corresponding carbon holders or blades 59, as indicated in Figure 2.
When any one of the packs 62 of webplies is to be used, the platen-displa'ing frame 15 is released by means of the finger piece 2 and the platen-displacing frame is swung upwardly and forwardly. The leading end of the selected pack of web plies together with the interleaved carbons is then drawn forwardly between suitably positioned side gages 65 on a transversc rod 66, supported at its ends in the brackets 47. and is passed beneath the platen, and, at the -delivery side of the platen, between the platen and a knife 67 associated with the platen-displacing frame 15 The platen 12 is then restored to its normal position and typing effected in the usual inannen When the typing upon one set of forms has been completed, the platen is again displaced, the leading edges of the web-plies advanced to the leading-edge gage. and the carbon-sheets retracted by means of a handle attached to the carbon-carrier 39 in .use. The platen may then be restored to normal position, the typed sections severed by the knife 67, and the operation repeated. It should be understood that the pack to be used is necesit e sarily the one associated with the carboncarrier whose track is operatively positioned with reference to the platen.
When it is desired to type on one of the other packs of web-plies, the leading end of the pack formerly in use is withdrawn from the platen and folded rearwardly over the carbon blades or holders of the corresponding carbon-carrier, as indicated in Figure 2. The latches 51 are then drawn forwardly by the linger-pieces 54: and the rod 47 lifted out of the slots lS to free the frame 4-2 from the carriage, and the frame i2 is slid transversely of the machine to a position to bring the selected carbon-carrier 39 and its track to the proper position with reference to the carriage 27. The rod 47 is then swung into the slots 48, the exact position of the frame being determined by the slots 50., which must coincide in position with the ears. the latches 51 being cammed forwardly by the rod l? in its downward movement and then released to snap back into efiective position to enter slots 55 and. by engagement with the upper side of said rod i'i' to hold it in the slots 48. The heading end of the selected pack may then be drawn forward and passed under the platen as described for the first pack selected.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to at, inclusive, the frame or extension 32 is fixed to the carriage and consequently moves to the same extent, sothat the rear rail 35, supported on the auxiliary frame, may be of moderate length The frame 42, however, is shifted with reference to the extension 32 and when, for example, the frame 42 is in one of its extreme positions, the left, as shown in Figure 4, consideralole twisting stress is exerted on the extension' 32, and the lifting of the right side of the extension 32 from the rail 35 is prevented by the lower roll 37 on the right-hand bracket, asseen in Figure 4-7. The use of rolls to engage the lower side of the rail permits asy movement of the extension with the carriage notwithstanding the twisting stress exerted. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a letter-feeding carriage therefor having a rearward extension, aplurality of carbon-carriers to hold carbonsieets in interleaved relation with web-plies of different packs, a plurality of carbon-carrier tracks in substantially the same horizontal plane, a frame to carry said tracks and slidable on said extension lengthwise of the platen, and means for locating said frame in mechanically-determined positions with the selected carbon-carrier and associated pack in position for use,

In a typewriting machine having apiaten, the combination with a letter-feeding carriage, of separate devices for holding separate sets of carbon-sheets in interleaved relation with separate packs of work-sheets or webs, a support for said separate devices, a fixed guide upon which said support is mounted to be shifted lengthwise thereof and independently of the carriage to enable any one of said devices to be brought into 00- operative relation with said platen, and means for maintaining such cooperative relation when established.

In a typewriting machine, the combina tion of a carriage, a platen on said carriage, a rearward extension to travel with said carriage, a plurality of carbon-carriers arranged side by side and carried by said extension, said carbon-carriers being movable fore and aft of the machine individually to and away from the platen with work-webs and interleaved carboirsheets, and means to facilitate sidewise adjustment of said carbon-carriers to various positions on said extension to render the carbon-carriers, one at :1 time with their associated work-webs, selectively co-operative with the platen, said means including a frame supporting the carbon-carriers said frame being pivoted at one end to said extension, and means at the other end of said extension to enable said frame to be released so that said frame may be moved sidewise with the carbon-carriers and webs on said extension.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen on said carriage, typing mechanism, devices on said carriage for holding carbon-sheets in inter leaved relation with separate packs of work sheets or webs, and means for effecting a movement of said holding devices on said carriage relatively to said typing mechanism to establish an operative relation between the typing mechanism and any desired pack.
11. In a typewriting machine having a platen, the combination with a letter-feeding carriage, of separate devices for holding separate sets of carbon-sheets in interleaved relation with separate packs of work-sheets or webs, means to selectively render effective any of the packs of work-sheets, said means including a supporting device for said separate holding devices shiitable to move any one of said devices with its carbons and peel: into co operate relation with said platen and the remaining devices with their carbons and packs out of Cooperative relation with the platen, and means for maintaining such co-operative relation when established.

In a typewiiting machine, the combination of a cariage, a rearward extension rigidly secured to said carriage to travel therewith, a plurality of carbon-carriers carried by said extension, said carbon-carriers being arrangezfl side by side and movable fore and aft of the machine individually to and away from the platen with work-webs and interleaved carbon-sheets, and means to render said carbon-carriers, one at a time with their associated work-webs, selectively effective with the platen, said means including airame tipporting the carbon-carriers, said in me being pivoted at the rear on said extension, supports at the forward end of said extension up'onwhich the frame rests, the forward end of the frame having slots, a locating device on said extension to engage in said slots to establish the relation between said frame and said extension and prevent accidental shifting between them, and a latch to hold the frame down against said supports, said latch being operable to release the forward end of the frame so that said frame may be swungfree of the locating device to enable said frame to be moved sidewise on said extension with said carbon-carriers to other positions.
13. in a typewriting machine having a platen, the combination with a letter-feeding carriage, of separate means, arranged side by side, connected to travel with the carriage for holding separate sets of carbon-sheets in interleaved relation with separate packs of worksheets or webs, and means to facilitate the feeding of said packs, one at a time, to the same field of the platen, and maintaining the remainder out of use.

In a typewriting machine, the combi nation or a carriage, a platen on said carriage, an extension on said carriage to travel therewith, means carried by said extension to conduct a plurality of worlewebs fore and aft of the machine, and means to facilitate a sidewise adjustment of the work-webs collectively to render any one of them cooperative with the platen, said means in cluding a frame over which the work-webs are conducted and which frame is supported by said extension, a set of guides on said rame, one set for each work-web, and means to enable the frame to be adjusted sidewise on said extension.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen on said carriage, an extension to travel with said carriage, and means supporting a plurality of work-sheets arranged side by side, said supporting means being shiftable laterally on said extension to bring any one of said sheets into operative relation with the platen.

In a typewriting machine, the combination. of a carriage, a platen on said curriage, an extension to travel with said carriage, means supporting a plurality of work-sheets arranged side by side, said supporting means being shii'table laterally on said extension to bring any one of said sheets into operative relation with said platen, the supporting means being pivot-ed at one end to said extension, and holding means at the other end of the supporting means to hold the latter in its adjusted position, said supporting means being releasable from the holding means, so that it may be swung about its pivot to disconnect it preparatory to sliding it laterally to a different position on said extension.

In a typewriting machine, the combi nation of a carriage, a platen on said carriage, a rearward extension over which a plurality of sets of Work-webs, each having a set of interleaved carbon-sheets, may be conducted to the platen, carbon-carriers, one for each set of sheets, to which the carbon sheets are attached, tracks to guide the carbon-carriers to and away from the platen, a swing-frame carrying the platen, said swing-frame being pivoted on said carriage to swing the platen to an abnormal position, so that the effective Work-Web may be straightened'out to enable the carbon-sheets to be shifted to a fresh portion of the Workweb, means whereby the carbon-carriers are supported in a horizontal plane, so that each work-web may be substantially horizontal when in use during a carbon-shifting operation, said means including a horizontally disposed frame mounted on said eX- tension and supporting said tracks, and means to enable said frame to be shifted side-wise on said extension to bring any one of said webs and its interleaved carbonsheets into co-operative relation with the platen.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen on said earriage, and means to conduct a plurality of individual wori-webs arranged side by side to the platen, said means comprising a device to travel with said carriage, and means to faciltiate adjustment of said device in the direction of travel of said carriage to render any one of the webs selectively ef fective with the platen.
