My invention relates to boilers for heating systems and has for an object the provision of a boiler in which the heating mediumconsisting of either water or steam, is subjected to an extended heating act-ion in the combustion chamber. I accomplish the objects of my invention by the provision of spiral member or coil placed above the. fire-pot of the boiler and through the entire length of which the heating medium is compelled totravel so as to be sub eCted to a prolonged heating action without liability I of dead pockets forming.

Beterringto the construction shown in the drawings, the boiler includes a fire-pot located within the inner wall 12 of a doublewalled member having an outer wall 14, these two walls being arranged concentrically and enclosing an annular water chamber 16. Underneath a grate 18 at the bottom of the fire-pot is an ash-pit 20 provided with a door 22. Associated with the upper end of the fire-pot is a charging door 24. The doublewalled member at its forward portion is of reduced height to provide for the charging door 24, and is of reduced depth to provide for a clinker-door 26. The douhie-walled member is entirely closed at its bottom, and is closed at its top except for a rear opening formed by an outwardly-bulged portion 28 of the outer wall 14 and an inwardly-bulged portion 30 of the inner wall 12, these bulged portions at their upper ends being enlarged interiorly to provide an annular flange 32. The portion 28 is turned outwardly so as to form a horizontal shoulder 34. A" hollow spiral member 36 is provided at the outer end of its coil with a vertically extending tube 38 and at its inner end with a vertically-extending tube 40. The lower end of the tube 38 is rabbeted to fit together with the flange Above 1 the member 36 in the embodiment shown is a second hollow spiral member 42 provided at its outer end with a vertically-extending tube44 having rabbeted connect-ion at its lower end with the upper end of the tube 38 and provided at its inner end with a tube 46 having rabbeten connection at its lower end with the upper end of the tube 40. The members 36 and 42 are flattened so that the coiled pipe which is produced is elongated in cross-section vertically. Having rabbeted connection with the upper end of the tube 44 is a cover-plate 46. A rod 50 extends through this coverdate and through the shoulder 34. The spiral members are enclosed in a sheet metal casing 52 secured around the same, as shown in 4. At the upper end of the boiler is a chamber 53 in a 1 plate has rabbeted connection with the lower end of the tube 40 and a rod 62 extends centrally through the plate 60 and through the upper wall of the casing 54; A dome 64 is placed over the smoke Hues 56 and a smoke-pipe 66 leads from the upper end of said dome. The front of the boiler is provided with clean-out doors 68 and 70 located slightly above the spiral members 36 and 42, respectively. for the heating medium lead into the chamber 16, while. outlet pipes 74 lead from the chamber 53.
The operation and advantages of my in vention will be readily understood in connection with the foregoing description. While I have shown two spiral members in the combustion chamber above the firepot, it will be understood that one or more of these members may be employed as desired. These spiral members may be cast or may be constructed of sheet metal and they take their supply of the heating medium at the back of the fire-pot, this medium being compelled to travel through the entire length of the coils before it enters the upper chamber of the boiler. WVhile my invention is shown more particularly in connection with boilers for Return pipes 72 stood that it may be used in connection with boilers for steam-heating systems. In the latter case the dome would be made larger to provide ample steam-carrying capacity. As distinguished from boilers havin flat sections for the heating medium, my boiler pro vides for longer travel of the heating medium and more surface is exposed to the fire, thereby reducing the quantity of fuel required. Also the circulation is positive and rapid because friction is reduced to a minimum and dead pockets are eliminated. Furth'ermore, there is less opportunity for soot draft.
