WINDSHIELD.

This invention relates to automobile windshields.
One of the principal objects of the 1nven tion is to provide a wind-shield for automobiles, and the like, which may be closed tightly to prevent the ingress of water into the drivers compartment of the automobile.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the description set out below when taken in connection with accompanying drawing.

One of the greatest problems which con fronts the manufacturer of wind-shields for automobiles, and the like, is to provide form of apparatus which may be so tightly closed that the ingress of water into the driving compartment of the car will be prevented even when the car is being driven in a heavy driving rain. Many types of ind-shields have been devised having this desired in mind; but so far as I am aware no windshield heretofore devised may be mad tight as against very heavy rains driven by strong wind. The windshield which forms the subject matter of this invention, and a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, is so constructed that leakage of this character is prevented.
in the type of wind-shield shown, an upper section 10 is provided which pivotally connect-ed to side frame members 11, and is so arranged that it may be swung outwardly, in a well known manner. The lower section 12 of the wind-shield is provided at each side near its upper edge, with a bracket plate 13, having a slot therein which is adapted to receive a lug 14 mounted on the cooperating side frame 11. The bottom portion 12 is provided along its bottom with an inverted channel member 16, which is adapted to receive the upstanding fence 17, this fence being in turn tightly connected to a pan 20. The fence 17 is preferably spotwelded to the pan 20 but it may be connected in any other suitable way. WVhen the lower section of the wind-shield is closed it is positioned with the trough member 16 inclosing the fence 17. hen it is desired to open the lower section it is first lifted and then swung so that the slots ride over the lugs to hold it in inclined position in the well known manner. hen it is closed it is given reverse movement. Preferably a rubber strip 18 is positioned between the cooperating edges of the upper and lower section of the wind-shield to prevent leakage between those sections.
The pen 20 is connected to the body of the car, and has along its rear side an upstanding flange 21., and a downwardly e1- tending flange 22 along its front side. It is also provided at each end with an upstanding flange 23, which is tightly connected to the side frame 11 which frame is in turn bolted directly, or otherwise suitably connected, to the body of the car. Some means provided for preventing leakage between the ends of the upper and lower sections of the wind-shield and the vertical side frames 11. This means may be of any suitable character, but preferably these parts are provided with a cooperating tongue and groove construction of such character that the leakage of water backwardly past the ends of the two sections of the wind-shield will be prevented. Also when the trough member 16 is positioned upon the fence 1? leakage along the bottom of the windshield is prevented. It is found, however, that in extremely heavy driving rains some water tends to leak around the ends and also through the fence and trough construction. However, if such leakage occurs the leakage water will not pass into the drivers com partment of the car; but it will be caught by the pan 20, the back flange 21 and the end flanges preventing any water that thus leaks through the windshield into the pm from passing back into the car. Such w will run out of the front, open. side of pan. If desired the pan may be arranged so that it inclines downwardly toward the front of the car to facilitate the draining off of water from the pan.
While the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein Without departing from the scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims. 7
That is claimed is: a
1. In a Wind-shield of the character de scribed, a Wind-shield section, means associated with the Wind-shield section for retarding the passage of Water past the wind shield to the interior side thereof, and a pan for collecting Water leaking past said 'retarding means tothe interior side of said Wind-shield and for returning such Water to the outside ofthe car.
2. A Wind-shield of the character de scribed comprising a movable section, means associated with the two ends and the bottom of said section for retarding the passage of Water around the ends and bottom of: said section, and means for collecting water that may leak through'the said retarding means of the Wind-shield and for returning said Water to the outside of the car.
8. A wind-shield of the character de scribed comprising a movable section, means associated With each'end of the said movable section for retarding the passage of water past the end ofsaid movable section when said section is in closed position, a trough member mounted along the bottom of said movable section, a fence member adapted to receive the said trough member mounted on the body of the automobile, and a'collecting pan cooperating With the lower end of said movable section for receiving any leakage through the said Wind-shield and returning such leakage to the outside of the car.
