lli/ly invention relates to an improvement in automobile traflic signals, and more particularly to a combined visual stop and di.-
rection signal for motor vehicles ot all classes and descriptions. f
The principal object of lthe invention `is to provide for a .signal light of the class de` scribed and to combine a stop signal and direction signal inone housing.
Another object of the invention is to pro'- vide for a combined stop and direction signal ol the class described embodying a simple andl effetive means" ot projecting either a stop signal or-.rlirection signal in thesame plane frome one housing. y
f (lith-erv features' and 'the manner of accomplishing these objects will more fully appear inthe following speciication and drawings.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts,- Figure 1 is a liront elevation view ot the traflic signal with the Word Stop projected on the tace. liigure 2 is a vertical section taken on the line A-l of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a sectional plan view of Figure 1 taken ou the line B-B ot' Figure 2. Figure Il is a vertical section taken on the line Ae-A oi Figure 1 showing another means of projecting the stop and direction signal.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a housing having an opening in the 'front portion. 'llhe back of the housing is also open and is sivedged over entirely around the perimeter to provide means to secure the locking studs 9 and the support 8.
'lhe support 8, which also serves as a cover tor the rear end of the housing and a 'support for the lamps 6, is secured to the housing by means of the studs 9 and the Wing nuts 10, and the said support is provided with holes 13 so that it may be tasl tened to some convenient part ofthe automobile. with the sockets to hold the lamps 6.
The front end of the housing is turned over to provide means to support the panels `2---11--12- The panels 2-11 and 12 consist ot clear glass and are covered on the inside with paper of any desired color. It has been round in actual practice that ver)v satisfactory results are obtained'by cover ing theinside ot the panels With colored paper or similar substance; Whichhresults can not he obtained hy using ordinary col- 'lFhe supporty 8 is also provided ored glass "as the intensitjrot the light trom' 'the lamps is diffused over the entire `lace oit the .panels',when clear glass is used.
lt will be observed in Figure 2 that a partition let, which consists ot an angular, un
piece and holds the glass panel 2 in position and in turn the partition 1d is held in position hy the brace 5. 'The upper part ot' the' partition is .provided 'with anarroiv shaped opening 3 Which'opening is shown in detail 33 inligure 3. The lower part of the partition is provided with the Word Stop il which is stenciled on the partition.
llily using an angular partition 1d, which is divided into an upper and lower portion ia by means ot a brace 5 Which extends across the inside of `the housing9 it is possible to project the tratlic' arrow and the stop signal in the same plane on the panel 2 and reduce the size ot the housing to a minimum. 71
The'arrow indicia 3 and tile stopwindicia are specially designed and located on the partition 1d so as to project the said indicia undistorted on the center ofthe translucent plate 2.
Figure t is 'another means of operating my trame signal ion the same general principles by having the panels 11 Aand l2 in tivo sections which may los of different colors, 'and a similar projector 16 Which is t5 placed parallel with the panels 11 and 12-` and the said panels and partiti-on held in position by means ol the brace'l.
Bjr referring to Figures 2 and l it will be seen that thebraces 5 and 15 extend oo across the inside of the housing and divide the housing intol two separate and distinct compartments so that each compartment may loe-used independent ot the other.
Having thus described my invention, e5
what l claim, and desire to secure by lietters Patent, is: l l
1. A combined automobile stop signal and direction signal comprising a housing,
a translucent plate secured in one side of loo lucent plate in spaced relation thereto and 1W extending in a direction parallel therewith, a brace forming a partition approximately at right angles to said translucent plate and extendingr trom the junctions of the said lirst partitions t0 the Side olf the housing H0 opposite to said translucent' plate, forming together with said first partitions, a plu-v rality of chambers within said housing, av
source ot light Withineach of those of the said chambers `which extends from the side of the housing opposite to said translucent plate, a cover vfor the side of said housing opposite to said translucent plate, means to secure said cover to said housing, said cover toprovide means t`o fasten the said' housingto an automobile.
2. A -combined automobile stop signal and direction signal comprising ahousing, a translucent plate secured in one side of saidl housing, a Y shaped partition bearing against a brace forming a partition dividing the said housing into three chambers cictendi'ng longitudinally in a direction par- `allel to .said translucent plate, the two branches of the Y shapedpartitionhaving openings stenciled therein forming indicia,-
asou'rce of light within each of those two of the said chambers most remote from lsaid translucent plate and inxspaced relation to said partition, a cover for the side of saidf housing opposite to said translucent platenl fixed my signature.
therein,'a cover over the side of said hous-` ing opposite said translucent.plate, means to secure said cover to said housing, said cover to provide mea'ns to fasten'tliesald housingto an automobile, a 'partitioncon-y sol cave to said translucent plate extending longitudinally throughout the 'length of said housing, and provided with openings form' ing indicia, its 'extreme longitudinal edges bearinmagai'nst the .longitudinal edges of the said translucent plate, a'brace forming a partition, said partition. bearink against the said cover near thecenter-'t iereof, ,a source 0j light in each of the chambers formed' Withinsaidhousing betsveen said partition and said cover. 4- v In Witness` whereof I have hereunto af- JoHNJQ COSTELLO.
