Description
UNITED STATES "PATENT (Darren.
WALTER w. TEIAYER, on new YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANS FOR MIXING PAINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 60,852, dated March 16, 1875; application filed December 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER W. THAYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Marking- Oan, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents'a top View; and Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section on the line 0 c, Fig. 1, of my improved marking-can.
. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved marking-can by which the paint or color for marking barrels, cases, packages, 850., may be readily and economically mixed in a very convenient and easy manner; and it consists of a can or pot with a hollow handle, forming a receptacle or reservoir for the turpentine or other mixing liquid. The handle communicates by a vent-hole and issuing-orifice, which are closed and opened by a hinged springvalve, with the mixing-can for admitting the required quantity of liquid to the color. The marking-brush is placed after use into a side sleeve of the handle and recess of the can, while the paper with the direction or address to b marked is secured by a spring-holder to the can or pot.
In the drawing, A represents the pot or cupshaped vessel, in which the color is mixed; B, the handle-part attached thereto, being made hollow and of sufficient size to form a reservoir or receptacle for the turpentine or other mixing-liquid by which the lamp-black or other marking color is mixed for flowing easily from the brush. The reservoir of the handles communicates by a liquid-issuing oritlce, a, and a vent-hole, b, with the can A, the holes being opened or closed for the admission of the required quantity of mixing-liquid to the can by a hinged valve, 0, which is acted upon below its rear or thumb-part by a spring, 61, and provided with suitable felt or other lining for closing hermetically the communieating-holes until opened by pressure on the thumb-rest of the valve 0. The reservoir is readily filled by holding the handle in nearly upright position, opening the valve and pouring the liquid into the can, so that it runs from there into the handle. A sleeve, 6, at the end of the handle, and a recess, 0, of the can near the junction of the handle with the same, serves to support the brush after use. A spring card-holder, f, at the side and near the rim of the can, serves to put in the card or other strip of paper with the address or other signs marked thereon, for-having it conveniently before the marker for reference, and avoiding thereby mistakes in marking, while expediting the same considerably. The marking-can forms thus a very useful, neat, and time-saving implement for business purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A marking-can, consisting of a mixingvessel, a reservoir-handle, having orifices a, l), and a spring-pressed valve, O, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of sleeve 0 on handle and vessel A, having recess 6 in its upper edge to hold the brush, in the manner described.
WALTER W. THAYER.
