MEANS FOR RENOVATING PRINTERS TYPE.
Application filed July 18, 1925. Serial No. 44,499.
My invention is designed to afford adequate means whereby printers type may be quickly and conveniently manipulated for cleansing purposes without disturbing the relative arrangement thereof as distributed to the .boX compartments of a compositors ordinary case in which the separate letters of a font of type are segregated in a manner well known in the art, this being attained ina manner hereinafter fully set forth, and the invention consisting primarily and essentially in the specific combination, confstruction, and arrangement of component parts and appurtenances of the rotatable 'type-holding and washing apparatus de scribed and claimed, whereby these and other advantageous results are attained.
In the accompanying drawings I illustratea practical embodiment of the essential features of my invention in type cleaning apparatus of the character designated, comprising a plurality of connected trays formed each with a series of intersticed or reticulated pockets or compartments corresponding in number, and relative arrangement to the individual type boX-com-partments of the compositors case in conjunction with which theparticular device is to be used, together withreticulated meansfor retaining the types therein, and for rotating the same, as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth, altogether I do not restrict myself to the identical form and construction of component parts shown by way of exemplification herein, since changes may be made in minor details, and equivalent mechanical .exp'edients resorted to, with likeresults, and without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
.In the drawings- Fig. 1 represents a top view of the open face of a tripartite arrangement of washtrays, spread on the fiat, the openings between the walls of therespective pockets ,or type receptaclesof which correspond insize and shape to those of the type. boxes or cornpartmentsof the compositors type casefor "which the tripartite wash-tray is designed; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the wash-tray ,shown in Fig. 1; o i Fig. 3 isa sideelevation, .partly in section on plane of line 3 .3 Fig. 1, representing-the tripartite wash-tray shown in Fig. land Fig. '2, assuperposed on the type'setter case for which, this combination is designed;
Fig. 4, is a top view of the tripartite Washtray shown in Fig. 1, with the reticulated covers applied thereto;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the parts shownin Fig. 4.,
Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the rotative H shaft, showing one of its traysupporting flanges; Fig. 7 is an end elevation ofrthe parts shown in Figs. 4 and 5,as folded andsecured in closed relationship for rotation in' a suitable tank containing a cleansing solution; H V
Fig. 8 is an 'sometrical view of one of the reticulatedcovers; T' Fig. 9 is an isometrical view of the rotative shaft. and its triangular tray-supporting flanges as positioned on 1.011eof 'the tray covers Fig. 10 is a view similar to 7 showing aniodification in whichprovision is made .for a quadruplex combination ofwash-tray sections;
Fig. 11 is a detail view showing a means for lockingthe wash-trays together around the supporting rotor element.
In all but the last figure of the drawings I have, for convenience of exemplification, shown my type renovating apparatus as constructed and arranged inaccordance with the form and requirements of a compositors type casesub-divided byequidistantly positionedtransverse partitions into sections in the manner well known in the typographical art, in which latter other divisions of the type setters case, as well, for instance, as the quadruplex. type case indicated as provided for'in Fig. 10, rnay be resorted to, it being understood, of course, in this connection, that my type-cleansing apparatus may beadapted to the requirements of type cases of any plurality of sub -'divisions as may be found expedient each special form and arrangement of compositors type case requires a corresponding modification in the construction and arrangement of my type cleansing means. I
Hence the distinctive feature of my invention consists essentially in the provision of ,subedivisional ,washetrays' corresponding in shape and number to the divisions of a compositors type case ofa prescribedform and construction, in conjunction with closure means for said wash-trays,.and rotative .means provided .with lwash tray supporting means, adapting the washer to the iequireinents of a particular arrangement of type-setters case.
Each wash-tray T, is formed with a series of pockets or type receptacles If, t, the entrances to which (indicated particularlyun Fig. 1 of the drawings) correspond in size and shape to the type-box compartments 0 of a compositors case C A In the tripartite sectional combination of wash-tray T, shown in the drawings, the outer foldable sections are hincedly connected to the inner medial section by pintle rod 79, 77, extending through eye-knuckle flanges it, provided for the purpose on the conjunctive edges of the trays, the latter also being formed on their narrower end edges with eye-knuckle flanges Z0 for the reception, upon occasion, of longitudinal bolt rods 6, Z), by means of which the said washtray sections T may be temporarily locked in extended position and co-relationship, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, when it is desired to superpose the tripartite trays upon a compositors type case C, as indicated in Fig. 3. When thus superposed and clamped together, this temporary combination of wash-tray T and type case C, is reversed, resulting in the transfer of the types from the box-compartments 0, in the case C, to the corresponding and coincident type pockets in t, in the wash-tray section T,
. after which the case C, is disconnected and removed from the wash-trays sections.
The type receptacles or pockets t, in the wash-tray T, are deeper and of greater in ternal area and capacity than the corre sponding type boxcompartments c, in the compositors caseC, so as to afford ample room for freedom of movement of the types in the pockets during the rotative cleansing operation; and the sides and end walls of said pockets are reticulated to admit of the passage of a cleansing liquid.
After the disconnection and removal of thecompositors type case C, form the tray sections, as above stated, the long bolt rods 6, b, are withdrawn, and the recticulated covers A positioned over the otherwise open faces of the trays T, and secured thereto by shorter bolts rods 6 6 inserted in the end eye-knuckles 76 of the wash-trays T, and in the intervening endeye-knucklesc, a, of the reticulated covers A, A, as shown more particularly in Figs. 5 and 7 and 10 of the drawings.
Rigidity attached to the outer side of one of the reticulated covers A, are the angular flange-s r, r, of the rotor shaft R. In the tripartite combination of wash-trays illustrated in all figures of the drawings except Fig. 10, the rotor element R, r, r, r, is thus mounted on the medial cover, although this is not material, since said motor element might be so mounted on either of the other covers with like result in that the coven in any case are foldable as related to each other against the angular 'ash-tray' supporting flanges r, 1', of the rotor shaftdi. hen thus folded over the said supporting flanges r, of the rotor R, the t ys are locked thereagainst by means of bifurcated lock pins L, as indicated more particularly in Fig. l]. of the drawings, the parallel arms of the lock pins Z being inserted in tabular sockets s, s, integral with the side flanges t", 25*, of the end Wash-trays, said sockets S, S, being shown in solid lines in Figs. 2 and 3 in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Thus assembled upon and secured .to the rotor element R, my type cleansing apparatus, as a unit, is designed to be so mounted upon and in such relation to, a tank containing av suitable cleansing liquid that the rotation of said unit, by means of a suitable mechanical expedient, which insures the immersion, successively, of the wash-trays T, and hence the agitation and. cleansing of the types in the pockets t, thereof.
At the conclusion of the washing operation the sectional wash-trays are opened up, the rotor R, and cover A, detached and removed, and with the wash-trays againextended on the flat, as in Fig. 1, the compositors type case C, is superposed uponand clamped thereto, when the reversalof the wash-trays and compositors case (thus temporarily reunited) into the relative positions shown in Fig. 3, lnsures the return of the washed types to their respective boxcompartments in-said compositors type case.
The disconnection and removal of the inverted wash-trays from the t pe case then. leaves the cleared type, practlcally as good as new, in its original relative character arrangement with the case.
Thus by the use of my type washing apparatus as herein set forth, not only. the faces, but also other portions of the inclividua-l types are cleansed and renovated in such manner as to restore them substantially to their original state and condition as before use, so that prints made therefrom will be clean, clear and perfect, -eliminating the effects of off feet conditions incidental to the use of dirty type, as will be readily understood by those conversant, practically, with the art of typography, and thus obviating the former necessity for discarding old type fonts, and their replacement by new fonts,an expensive expedient as compared with my system of type renovation.
It is to be understood that by the terms reticulated as herein used, I mean to include intersticed or foraminulous structures of any process of renovation is that the type is thereby restored to its original sanitary condition, so that its manipulation may be effected Without danger to the compositor.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Type cleaning apparatus of the character designated comprising a plurality of hingedly connected wash-trays each formed with a series of reticulated angular type pockets, reticulated covers detachably connected with said waslrtrays, and a rotatable shaft formed with angular flange supports for said trays, together with means for securing the latter thereto, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. Type cleaning apparatus of the character designated, comprising three hingedly connected wash trays each formed with a series of reticulated angular type pockets, reticulated covers detachably connected with said type trays and a rotatable shaft formed with triangular flange supports for the said Wash-trays, together with means for securing the latter thereto, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
