rlhis invention relates to a kmachine for punching and riveting sheet material, and particularly to a mechanism for supporting the Work Whilethe latter is being subjected 1' to the punching and riveting operations.
ln the riveting machine upon which my invention is employed there are separate punching and rivet setting instrumentalities, together with a mechanism fory alter- W nately moving each of said instrumentali-v t-ies into the same operative position relatively to the sheet material comprising the Work, the latter first having a hole punched therein by the punching instrumentalities Which are then Withdrawn, and vvith the Work remaining in its initial position the rivet setting instrumentalities are `moved into alignment with the hole that has-been punched, after Which a rivet is inserted therethrough and subsequently clinched.v
ln a machine of this type it is very essential that the Worky shall be supported in such a Vmanner that it will not be moved during the interval that the punching in-y 5 strumentalities are being Withdrawn theres from and the rivet setting instrumentalities are being fed into alignment with the hole that has been punched, for if said hole is not in alignment with the rivet hold` ing and setting instrumentalities, the rivet will not enter the hole kprovided therefor but will be forced through said Work in an objectionable manner and at an undesirable location, thereby ruining the Work. lt is an object, therefore, of this inven-A tion to provide a mechanism for normally supporting the Work which consists of thin sheet material a slight distance above adie which forms a portion of the punching instrumentalities, said mechanism being so ar- Y The invention also contemplates Va construction ot Work support that Will permit the Work to be fed thereon between the suc-V cessive riveting operations Without interference from the anvil.
The invention consists oit a riveting machine as set forth in the following specilif cation, and particularly as pointed out in the claimsvthereoii.

Also inounted in the head 1G at one side ot the rivet carrier slide 17, see Fig. is a punch slide 19 at the lower end `of which is `a punch. holder l carrying a punch 21, Mounted in the head 12 at the rear of the rivet carrier slide l17 is a stripper slide 22, the latter carrying a `stripper 23 at its lower end. Located upon the opposite side ot the rivet carrier slide 1'7 from that upon which the punch slide 19 is Vlocated Vis a driver slide 2li, the latter carrying a driver 25 at its lower end, see Fig.
The rivet carrier slide 17., punch slide 19, stripper slide 22 and driver slide 24 are grouped closely together within the head' 1G, all being adapted to he 'moved vertically within said head hy mechanisms hereinafter to he described, all of said slides being` held in said head hy a hearing plate 28 which secured tothe 'front of said head. A` rocking movement` is imparted 'to the auxiiiary traine 12 and shaft 13 by lever 27 pivoted at 28 to the 'traine 107 one end of said lever 27 being; operatively connected by a link 29 with said traine 12, while the other ond of said lever has acain roll 30 journailed thereon, the latter proiecting` into a suitable groove 'formed in the periphery of a cani 31 tast to a shaft 32, the latter being driven in any sui table manner from aniain drivingF shaft 33.

A vertical reciprocatory movement is imparted to the driver slide 24 by a lever 71 pivoted at 72 upon the frame l0, and the front extremity 7 3 of said lever 7l is cylindrical .in form and projects into a sliding block 74 which is mounted in al member 75 rigidly secured to the upper extremity of the driver slide 24. The lever 7l is rocked by a cam 76 which is fast to the shaft 32..
As the driver 25descends to force a rivet a located in the rivet carrier 18 from the latter and through the opening that has been punched in the work, the work support 4l and work thereon will be forced downwardly as the under side of the rivet head engages the work until said work is deposited upon the upper surface of the anvil 39, after which the rivet is clinched to the ma` terial in the usual well known manner. lNhen the driver again rises, the work support and work thereon will again rise and return to their normal positions.
rlhe general operation of the mechanism hereinbetore specifically described is as follows :The work A which consists of very thin sheet material is placed upon the work support 4l beneath the spring clamp 4:6, the latter securely holding` said work upon the upper edges of the fingers 45 at the forward end of said work support. At' this time the work-support ll is located in its raised or normal position in which position it is held by the spring 48, and the work A is located a. slight distance above the upper surface of the die 38 and anvil 39.
The punch 2l and stripper 23 next descend and the punch 2l upon engaging the work forces the latter downwardly together with the work support 4-1, depositing said work upon the upper surface of the die 3S, after which said punch continues downwardly, punching the hole in said work. The punch and stripper then move upwardly allowing the work support Zll and work A to return to their normal positions, and if it happens that a slight bur or flange has been formed by the punch 2l around the edge of the hole which might cause the work to be moved upon the work support during a movement of the slide 35 beneath said work, the possi bility of such interference with the work is eliminated by the removal of the work from engagement with the die 38'.
The' rivet setting instrumentalities Vare now moved into alignment with the hole that has been formed in the work A, the auxiliary frame l2 being rockedto position the rivet carrier 18 and driver 25 above said hole, and the slide 35 being moved beneath said work toy align the anvil 39 with said rivet carrier andd'river, after which a rivet a located in said carrier is forced therefrom and inserted 4in said hole, said rivet subsequently being clinched 'to said workin the usual well known'manner. The driver 2th`en rises and the work support ll and work A which have been forced downwardly during the riveting operation lagain move upwardly to their normal positions, leaving sufficient space between the clinched end of the rivet a and the upper surface of the anvil 39 to permit an operative to manually feed said work A into position to receive the next rivet without there being any interference between the anvil 39 and the previously inserted rivet. W hen the work has been correctly positioned to receive another rivet, the sequence of operations. previously mentioned is repeated kin attaching other rivets until the rear edge of the work A engages the stops 5l which determine the position of the last rivet to be inserted in said work.
I claim:
l. A machine for punching and riveting sheet material comprising, in combination, punching instrumentalities embodying therein a punch and die, rivet setting instrumentalities embodying therein a driver and anvil, a work support including a pair of iingers normally positioned to support sheet material at a distance above said die and anvil, means to impart a rectilinear reciprocating movement to said die and anvil between said fingers, said work support being adapted to be forced downwardly to bring said sheet material into contact with said die and anvil by said punch and driver respectively during the downward movement of each, and means to return said work support and sheet material to theirnormal posit-ions after each downward movement.
2. A machine for punching and riveting sheet material comprising, in combination, a yielding work support including a pair of fingers, a slide mounted beneath said work support and projecting upwardly between said lingers and embodying therein a die and anvil, a punch, a driver, means to alternately move said slide to position said die and anvil in alignment with said punch and driven respectively, means to move said punch into co-operative relation with said die to punch a hole in said sheet material, and means to subsequently move said driver to force a rivet through said hole and clinch the same in said material, said work support being' adapted to be forced downwardly to bring said sheet material into contact with said die l Sheet material comprising, in combination, a
