RADIATOR G'QARD Filed Sept A18 I UNITED STATES JOHN C. HAGGART, JR., OF ALMA, MICHIGAN.
PATENT OFFICE.
' RADIATOR GUARD.
Application filed September 18, 1924. Serial No. 738,343.
This invention relates to a device for protecting radiators of motor vehicles and its object is to provide a structure foi` the purpose which is cheap to manufacture and may be quickly and easily assembled.
' A further object is to provide a construction whereby the device may be readily disassembled and repaired in case of accident,
and whereby the device mayY very quicklyy lo and easily be demounted from the motor vehicle in case itis desirable to remove it for the purpose of gaining free access to the radiator, engine or other parts for the purpose of replacement or repair.
The invention also consists in providing` a structure having certain other new and useful features, all as hereinafter more fully described. l
.lith the above and other endsin view the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended' claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a device illustrative of the lpresent invention and showing the same in place upon a motor vehicle; Y ,Y
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the adjacent parts of the motor vehicle shown in dotted lines; I
Fig. 3 is Ya. perspective detail of parts of the device with the parts shown partly in section, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional detail of a lower portion of the device.
Guards Vfor protect-ing the front of a radiator upon a motor vehicle have usually been so constructed andv so secured in place upon the vehicle frame that they are not conveniently and quickly detachable, and further, such constructions have usually been such that in case of accident and damage to the guard, it is very difficult to repair the damage. j .f The present structure comprises a series of vertically spaced apart O'uard bars 'l which are preferably formed from flat stock and are of rectangular shape in cross section. To hold these' bars in assembled posi- BG tion and in spaced relation, a rod 2 is passed through -a hole in each of the bars 1 near their upper ends and sleeved upon this rod between adjacent bars is a series of short tubular sleeves 3. A short tubular spacer member 4 is sleeved upon the rod in contact ywith the outer side 'of each of the outer bars 1 of the assembly and brace rods 5 are provided with openings in their upper ends to receive the rod and are held upon the ends of the rod in contact with the spacers 4 by means of nuts 6 engaging the screwthreaded ends of the rod 2. The bars vare secured in assembled and spaced relation adjacent theirlower ends by means of a rod 7 which passes throughopenings in the several bars andyupon which rod is sleeved a series of spacersleeves similar to the sleeves 3. Adjacent its ends the rod 7 is screwthreaded as at 8 to receive nuts 9 adapted to engage 'the outer face of the outer bars of the assembly and thus clamp all of the bars together upon the rodand spaced apart by the sleeves 8. The endL portions 17 of therod 7 are of reduced diameter to engageV sockets or recesses in the inner ends of the screw-plugs 10 ywhich plugs are externally screw-threaded to engage screw-.threaded openings in the side frame members 11 of the chassis frame. The outer ends of these plugs 10 are each formed with a hexagonal head 12 for the application of a wrench thereto so that the plugs may be screwed'inwardly to firmly engage lthe end portions 17 `of the rod 7 and thus securely hold and rigidly support the lower end portion of the vguard between the side frame `members 1l of the vehicle frame.
To rigidly brace and support the. upper end of the guard forwardly of and in spaced relation to the forward side o-f the radiator which is indicated at 13, the brace members 5 which are securely attached to the ends Y of the rod 2, are provided, said braces being preferably vcurved lin the direction of their length to extend rearwardly at the sides of the radiator where they are secured at their Y lower ends to brackets 14 rivetedor otherwise permanently secured to the upper sides ofthe frame members 11, said brackets being provided with upwardly extending ears 15 which are spaced apart and provided with openings to receive bolts 16 and between which ears the lower flattened end portions of the braces 5 are secured byl these bolts passing through openings in these end portions of the braces.
Al guard of this character may be'quiclly assembled or taken apart as it consists of a series of flat bars which are strung upon' top and bottomrods passlng therethrough with the tubular 'spacers between the bars.
By removing the nuts 6 and 9 from the ends
