POMADE 00MB.
Application lcd July 17, 1925. Serial No. 44,255.
The invention relates generally to a pomade comb comprising a series of hollow teeth which communicate with a relatively large bowl or body portion to be iilled with a heavy pomade; and a plunger plate or disk arranged within the body or bowl and adapted to force the contents thereof through the hollow teeth directly upon the scalp or hair.
One ot the objects of my invention is to provide a comb ot this nature for the particular needs oi the negro race whose hair, being ot a kinky nature, is diilicu'lt to comb without -rirst applying a heavy grease or scalp invigorator (ointment or dressing). P-.ior to the present invention this has been accomplished by separating small portions o t the hair and applying the scalp invigorator or dressing with the lingers, which process is notJ only laborious, tedious and timo-consuming, but also the individual cannot in this manner well apply to his or her own head.
Another object of the invention is to Combine a brush which may be readily applied to the comb and be used in combination therewith.
A further object of the invention is to provide a comb of this character which will permit greasing, combing, and dressing ot ones own hair in a very few minutes and in a sanitary, clean and thorough manner.
@ther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the preferred form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the comb with the parts thereof separated.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the brush attachment.
Figure 4l is a vertical sectional view of the comb with the l'Jrus-h applied thereto.
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of a modified form ot the comb. l
Figuren is a vertical sectional view of this modified form oit comb; and
Figure 'l' is a detail view of the flattened dish which prevents the rotation of 'the threaded plunger rod.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, and particularly to Figures latol 4 inclusive, numeral .l indicates the body or bowl which adapted to receive the pomade or other nea carried by a handle 2 which is preferably hnurled, as indicated by numeral 3, to prevent the device from turning in the hand.
A piston or plunger head is slidably mounted in the bowl, and, ot course, has a tight lit with the walls thereof. The upper le or the piston or plunger head is pro- `"fjided with a plunger rod 5, which extends upwardly through an aperture 6 in the top ot the bowl; theplunger rod being of such length that it will project slightly above the top of the bowl when t-he plunger head is at its lowermost position. A lever 7 is pivotally attached to the upper side of the bowl and, as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the lever is so arranged that it may be conveniently engaged and operated by the thumb while the handle is held in the hand.
Numeral S refers to a dislr or plate which is provided with a series of comb teeth 9; which teeth preferably extend in line with the handle, and which are provided with passages l0 communicating with the interior ot the bowl or body. The outletsll or" the passages l0 are not at the extreme lower ends ot' the teeth, but are at the sides of the teeth away from the handle and adjacent the lower ends of the teeth. By this construction the outlets are prevented from becoming choked with cuticle or dandrul or otherwise becoming clogged. rlhe plate 8, carrying the teeth 9, may be removably attached to the lower end of the bowl by any appropriate means, though in this preferred form the plate is threaded, as indicated by numeral 12, and screwed into the lower end of the body or bowl l.
The operation ot' the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. To fill the comb, the plate carrying` the teeth is removed, and the body or bowl is filled with the pomade or heavy grease which is to be applied to the hair. The plate carrying the teeth isv then screwed into place, and the device is ready for use; the parts being in the position als indicated in Figure' l. The handle 2 is now grasped so that the thumb may be 'applied to the lever 7 and by exertingr` pressure on this lever it -is apparent that the 'plunger rod 5 and plunger l'hea'd- 4 will 'be moved slowly downward, so that the pomade will be forced through the passages 1.0 eed Outlets 191Y ot the teeth "9;, and ont@ vy grease; and this bowl or body l is the hair and scalp. lVhile the pressure is being applied the comb is drawn through the hair in the direction of the handle of the device, and as the outlets are on the opposite side of the teeth. it apparent that the outlets will not become lillcd with cut-icle or dandruif, or bcconle otherwise clogged.. ln this manner the peinado may be quickly and easily applied by the operator to his or her own head, and in a more efficient, thorough and sanitary manner than has been possible here-totem,
I have also devised a brush attachment which may be employed with and be mounted on the comb, thereby not only avoiding` the necessity of two separate implements, but palso increasing the efficiency of those treatments in which the use of a brush is desirable, as, for instance, in applying a hair dressing. I shall now describe the brush attachment. a d the means for nnfuintinel it on the comb; reference being nad particu larly to Figures 3 and 4.
The brush 13 is formed of two semi-circular sections 14, 14, which are fixed to the lower end of the cylindrical brush body member 15 by any desired means, such as by pins 1G. The semi-cylindrical brush sections are slightly spaced apart, as shown in Figure 3, to provide a slot 17, through which the comb' teeth 9 pass when the brush is applied to the comb. A locking bar 18 is pivotall.'v attached to the upper end of the cylindrical brush body, and a latch 19 is provided on the opposite side of the body for securing` the bar in place; the locking bar being provided with a large opening 2O to permit the bar to pass over the plunrod 5. rlhe comb body 15 is provided with an open ended slot 21 to receive the comb handle 2.
To mount the brush in place on the come, it is only necessary to place the bowl of thel comb within the cylindrical body 15 of the brush. and move the bowl downward. whereby the comb teeth will pass through the slot 17, while the comb handle will pass into the slot 21. To secure the parts together in operative position it is only necessary to swing the locking bar 18 downward into engagement with the latch 19. The arrangement ofthe parts, when assembled, is clearly illustrated in Figure 4.
I shall now describe a modified form ot my pomade comb; reference beinof had particularly to Figs. 5. 6 and 7.
In this form of the device, which may be termed the cylinder style of comb, the bowl or body is formed in the shape of an elongated cylinder 22, and r. tached to the lower side of this cylinder is a series of teeth 23 having passages 24 and outlets 25, just as in the preferred form of the device. Also as in the preferred form, the series of teeth is in alignment with the comb handle, and
Leaf/,eea
the outlets are on the side of the teeth opposite the handle, thereby preventing clog;- ging of the outlets, as previously described.
The comb handle is indicated gcneiallj,v
by numeral 26, and it is preferably remov ably attached to the comb bowl by means of screw threads 27. The forward portion of the handle; i. e., the portion adjacent the bowl, constitutes a barrel 28 to receive the pomade or heavy grease, and slidabljyvl mounted in the barrel is a piston or plunger head :29. It vill be understood, of cours that the comb is filled the first time by fihing both the bowl and the barrel, and the pomade is forced through the passage in the comb teeth, by the forward movement of the plunger 29. For the purpose of operat ing the plunger, I provide a threaded rod 30, which is attached at one end to the piston or plunger 29, and which is attached t its opposite end to a disk 31. which disl is flattened on one side, as indicated by nuw rfi-eral 32 (Fig. 7). This flattened side of the disk cooperates with a flattened interior wall of the hollow handle 9.6, thereby preventing the rotation of the disk 81, the threaded rod BO, and the plunger or piston head 29. The disk 31 and plunger head 2S) may be attached to the rod 30 by any desired means, but l. preferably employ set screws 33 for that purpose.
A thumb nut 34 is threaded on the rod 30, and the comb handle is slotted, as inc icated by numeral 35, to give access to the nut for the purpose of operation. The nut is held against longitudinal movement by engagement with the walls of the slot The operation of this form of comb will be clearly understood from the foregcnn description. ,ln the first filling of the comb, both the bowl and the barrel are filled with the pomade or other heavy grease; and the barrel is then connected to the bowl by the threads 2T, or by any other appropriate means. lli/*hen the comb is put into operiA tion, the thumb nut 84 is rotated while the comb is drawn through the hair in the direction of the handle, and obviously the rotation of the thumb nut will advance the plunger or piston head 29 and force the poinade through the teeth and onto the scalp and hair. It will be understood that in this form, as well as the preferred form. the plunger or piston head and the bodv are perfectly machined, so that the contents cannot escape by the plunger or piston head.
From the foregoing description it will ie apparent that I have devised comb b.' means of which a pomace or heavy grease may be applied to the hair and scalp in a very few minutes, in a sanitary, clean and thorough manner, and by means of which it may be applied to 'ones own hair and scalp without the necessity of an assistant.
llt
Ai (l neuneu .lt will also be apparent that I have devised a brush attachmentwhich may be mounted on the comb, thereby not only avoiding the necessity for two separate implement-s, but also increasing the efficiency of those treatments in which the use of al brush is desirable, as, for instance, in applying a hair dressing.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described what I now believe to be the best embodiment of the invention, but l do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting .uwselt or the scope ot the invention4x as many .,ngcs and modifications may be made without departing :trom the spiritot the invention; all such l aim to include in the scope oit the appended claims.
