Application fired November 2o, 1923,sera1 No. Gracie, and in Great 'Britain 'Jury 17, 1922.
This invention relates to emergency boiler' flue Stoppers for putting out of action any boiler flue or tube, which has burst whilst under steam pressure, and are operable from the stokehold end of the boiler.
The essential object of the present invention is to materially improve devices of the class specified and render them convenient in application and positive in performing members for operating at the combustion chamber and stolrehold ends of the boiler iiue or tube, are carried upon a central operating rod g, which also serves to conduct such members into their respective operating positions. l/Vithin the damaged boiler tube the combustion chamber obturating member consists of a rearwardly and forwardly tapering plug CZ, which is attached to the end of the central rod g. The front taper is to facilitate insertion into the faulty or burst boiler flue or tube. The front portion of said plug is provided with a square or hexagonal projection d by means of which the plug may be unscrewed in order to withdraw the stopper prior to inserting` a new tube. rlhe rear conical portion of said plug is surrounded by a. cylindrical ferrule e of soft copper, or other suitable.
ductile or resilient metal of diameter to enter the boiler tube. In some cases the said ferrule is grooved or otherwise prepared at e for the reception of. an asbestos or soft metallic packing e?, said packing may be in the form of a ring having its forward diameter greater than, and in advance of, the cylindrical ferrule.
The rear edge of the cylindrical ferrule rests upon a washer f, which is carried on the c entral rod g, and serves to centralize the leading obturating member.
A distance piece L which surrounds the central rod f/ is either in one length or may,
if desired, be composed of separate lengths 0f tubing but in all cases is externally threaded to receive an adjusting length or ferrule c', The central rod at the stolrehold end is threaded for a convenient length and upon which the stolrehold obturating plug ,7c is either screwed or freely mounted. This plug is forwardly coned and provided at the base with a rear flange Z of larger diameter than the boiler tube c at that end, and is formed with a circular groove m, upon its front face at the base of the conical portion of the'plug. This groove m is located opposite to the edge of the tube c and contains a ring n of suitable asbestos or metallic packing which is tightly held against the adjacent boiler tube edge.
The plug will be found eminently 7a suitable in cases where the end of the tube is unbeaded or of larger diameter than the main portion of the tube, and in cases where a direct pull is required. The threaded end of the central rod g also carries a copper or other washer 0 in contact with the Hat rear portion of the rear plug 7c.
A suitable lock or other nut p in contact with the said washer is carried upon the threaded extension of the central rod, which rod terminates in a squared portion g by the application of a spanner or wrench to said squared portion and by means of which the front obturator may be manipulated.
That I claim is Y l. The combination with a boiler flue or tube and the chamber and stokehold plates therefor, of a rod formed with screw threaded extremities and extending centrally through the tube and having on one end adjacent the chamber plate an obturating member, and a cylindrical ferrule extending into the tube and closely jointed to the latter by packing means, the said obturating member being formed with an inwardlv projecting conical portion within the said ferrule and the latter terminating against a washer mounted on the rod, the opposite end of the tube also having an obturating member with an inwardly extending conical projection mounted on the rod and having a packing device assembled therewith and engaging the adjacent end edge of the tube, a distance piece disposed in the end of the tube adjacent the lastnamed operating member, a tubular adjusting device between the said distance piece and the second obturating member, and means engaging one soreW-threaded extremity oi the rod for tightening up and securing the obturating members in engagement with the tube ends.
2. In a device of the class specified, the combination With a tube or lue and chamberand stokehold plates therefor and a rod extending Centrally through and held in fixed position in the tube, the rod having a screwthreaded extremity, of an obturating member applied over the screw-threaded eX- tremity of the rod and having a. yielding cylindrical errule extending therefrom and closely engaging the inner surface of the Wall of the tube, packing means between the outer extremity of the errule and the tube, and a Washer mounted on the rod and held in a predetermined position Within the tube, the inner end edge of the errule engaging the Washer.
In testimony Whereotl I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES BOYD.
