Description

vrTED STATES FFIG.
PATENT IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED ENVELOPES AND LETTER-SHEETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,708, dated March 9, 1875; application filed February 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST PETERSOHN, of Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined Envelope and Letter-Sheet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this application.
My invention relates to a novel folio forthe purposes of correspondence. It has for its object to provide a sheet adapted to be written upon, and having space for advertising purposes; and consists of a folio so folded and spaced that there shall be a suitable portion of the sheet upon which a letter may be written, and spaces within which advertisements may be printed, the whole so creased, folded, and fastened that the manuscript or correspondence shall be perfectly concealed, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable those skilled to more readily understand my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a folio, showing the face of the fly-leaf; Fig. 2, a similar view with the fl y-leaf folded longitudinally through its center down upon itself, exposing to view one-half of the inside thereof, and one-half of theinside of the other half of the sheet; and Fig. 3, a similar view of the folio completely opened, while Fig. 4 is a view of the folio closed and stamped ready to be deposited in the postoffice for transmission.
Similar letters indicate the same portions in the several views.
A represents the fly or front leaf of the folio, and B the rear or bottom leaf. The dotted line a; m, Fig. 1, indicates the fold made in the fly-leaf when it is folded'back upon itself, as seen in Fig. 2, and when so folded the interior half of the fly and the interior half of the back thus exposed to view are divided up into suitable spaces, (J O, &c., in which may be printed advertisements. The dotted lines 3 3 transverse to the dotted line a:
00, indicate creases upon which the ends of the sheet are folded inwardly before folding the back or bottom B on a line coincident with the line as w, and securing the sheet by the flap or tongue D.
The sheet when opened, as seen at Fig. 3, presents the central portion E, ruled for manuscript, and having in addition to the spaces 0 (J, as seen in Fig. 2, other spaces, 0 O, &c., upon the upper and lower margin, so that the manuscript-space is thus surrounded by advertisingspaces.
It will be seen that when the sheet A is folded back upon itself, as seen at Fig. 2, the manuscript written upon the face thereof is completely concealed, and the other manuscript portion, E, is likewise concealed, so that when the ends are folded in upon the lines 3 y, and the sheet again transversely folded upon a line coincident with w w, as before described, and fastened by the flap or tongue D, none of the manuscript portion is visible, even though the sheet may be peered into from either end, and when so folded a stamp, F, may be placed upon the face of the folded sheet. and an address written thereon, when the same is ready for transmission through the mail.
It will thus be observed that an envelope and sheet combined, and adapted to receive advertisements upon its interior surfaces, is produced, which may be conveniently used for the purposes of correspondence, and also serve as an efficient and valuable advertising medium.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A folio provided with manuscript and advertising spaces, disposed as shown, and adapted to be folded in the manner described, so that when folded and fastened the manuscript portions are completely concealed, as hereinbefore set forth.
AUGUST PETERSOHN.
In presence of T. E. MAJOR, B. W. HUNTER.
