A. F. FOSTER FEED ATTACHMENT FOR MEASURING MACHINES Filed July 24, 1922 .Alber E' Foster.
v ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 16, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE.
ALBERT F. FOSTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. ASSIGNOR TO J. MATTHEWS & (30., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FEED ATTACHMENT FOR MEASURING MACHINES.
Application filed July 24, 1922. Serial No. 577,077.
This invention relates to feeding means for skin measuring machines, the general object of the invention being to provide feeding rolls which are driven from the power shaft of the machine for feeding the skins to the measuring rolls.
Another object of the invention is. to
make one of the feeding rolls adjustable so as to regulate the tension on the skins being fed through the rolls.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a fragmentary front view showing the invention in use, parts being broken away.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing how the feed rolls are supported.
As shown in these views I provide a pair of feed rolls 1 and 2 in rear of the feed table 3 for feeding the skins to the measuring rolls 4. The lower roll is driven from the shaft 5 by the endless chain and sprockets 6. This lower roll is mounted in the bear ings 7 which are pivotally mounted to a transverse piece 8 of the frame. These bearings are provided with holes 9 for re- 4o ceiving the shaft 10 to which the tightener 11 for the endless chain is secured. This shaft is provided with a handle 12-. The
upper roll is journaled in arms 13 which are pivotally supported by the angle cross piece 14. This cross piece carries an arm 15 adjacent each of the arms 13 and an extension 16 on each arm 13 is connected with the arm 15 by a bolt 17 which carries a wing nut 18. Thus the upper roll can be adjusted by manipulating this nut 18 in relation to the lower roll.
It will be apparent from the drawings that the feed rolls 1 and 2 rotate with less peripheral speed than the measuring rolls and consequently the forward motion of the leather to be measured will be retarded.
This invention will permit the skins and hides to be fed to the measuring rolls by power means and as these rolls are driven from the same shaft which drives the measuring rolls accurate measurements of the skins are secured.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
that I claim is The combination with a skin measuring machine including measuring rolls, of a pair of auxiliary rollers for feeding skins to the measuring rolls, driving means for the said measuring rolls, power transmitting means operatively connecting one of said auxiliary rollers to said driving means for driving the auxiliary rollers simultaneously with the rotation of the measuring rolls at a reduced rate of speed relative to that of the measuring rolls, a pivotally mounted support for one of said auxiliary rollers and adjustable means associated with said pivotal support for holding the auxiliary roller carried thereby in constant frictional engagement with the other of said auxiliary rollers.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ALBERT F. FOSTER.
