This invention relates to molds, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel and simple device of this character which shall be especially adapted for use in the manufacture of a combined rubber heel and arch support for shoes.
With the foregoing andother objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The article adapted to be made by the mold forming the subject-matter of this application, comprises, as shown in Figures 8-11, a heel 1 and a support and cushion 2 which are to be made of rubber and nailed to the heel and arch of a shoe respectively. The support and cushion 2 extends forwardly and upwardly from the heel 1, but rests fiat on the ground when in use so that the arch of the foot will be supported from the ground up. The slight upward and forward inclination of the support and cushion 2, allows for the compression of this part under the weight of the body thereon, and
these parts are provided in their upper sides adapted to prevent the nails from being driven all the way through the heel and support and cushion. The heel 1 and support and cushion 2 are provided in their under sides with suction recesses 9 which surround the outer ends of the openings 7 and are of substantially elliptical formation. The recesses 9 are arranged with their major axes extending transversely of the heel 1 and support and cushion 2, and their lateral or forward andrearward sides incline upwardly and inwardly as shown at 10.
The mold comprises a bottom plate or section 11 and a top plate or section 12. The bottom plate 11 is provided with a recess 13 opening out through the top side thereof and having side and bottom walls similar in contour to the corresponding parts of the heel 1 and support and cushion '2. That partof the bottom plate 11 that is located forwardly beyond the recess 13 is of reduced thickness as shown at 14. This plate is provided at opposite sides of the recess and adjacent the forward end thereof with upstanding lugs 15, the topsides 16 of which are of arcuate formation and the rear sides 17 of which are perpendicular to the top side of the plate. The inner sides of the lugs 15 constitute continuations of the side walls of the recess 13.
The top plate 12- is provided in its bottom side with recesses 18 for the reception of the lugs 15, and that part thereof that is located forwardly beyond the recesses 18 is of increased thickness, whereby to adapt this plate to lie in full abutting contact with he bottom plate 11. The bottom side of the top plate 12 is also provided with core members 19 and 20 which in contour are similar respectively to the recesses 3 and a of the combined heel and arch support.
When the plates 11 and 12 are secured together there will be provided a closed chamber having a lateral wall similar in contour to that of the lateral side of the combined heel and arch support, a bottom wall similar in contour to the bottom side of the article and a top wall similar in contour to the top side of the article. The re duction of the thickness of the bottom plate 11 forwardly beyond the recess 13, permits the finished article to be readily removed from the recess when the'plates 11 and 12 are separated. The bottom plate 1 1 is provided at its corners with upstanding pins 11 and the top plate 12 is provided in. its cornerswith openings 12 for the reception of the pins, whereby. to permit, the plates toibe readily assembled with the core members 19 and 20 in proper position with respect to the recess 13. and. prevent the plates from having. any relative movement during the process of vulcanization.
The bottom wall of the recess 13 is provided withopenings 21 for the reception of the shanks 2210f pins 23 which are adapted to form the openings 7 and recesses 9' in the heel and arch" support and which are adapted tovsupport the washers 8 duringthe vulcanization process The pins 23' are provided above the shanks 22 with enlarged portions- 24 which rest on the bottom wall oftherecess 13 to support the pins in place and which in contour are similar to the recesses 9. The npini portions 24- form the recesses 9;: and above these portions-the pins are provided with stems 25 the upper por tions ot which are of reduced diameter to provide shoulders 26 which constitute reststor the washers 8 In practice, the pins 28* are first placed in the openings 21, and: thereafter the washersS are placed: on the pins a; manner' to be sup-ported by the shoulders 26 thereof; The rubber is then placed in the recess 13-; and after this has been donethe top plate 12 is appliedtombs-bottom; plate IL and secured in full abutting contacttherewith by a press. After the vulcanization process, and the removal of the mold from the press the top plate 12 is removed from the bottom plate 11, and after this has been done the completed article may be readily withdrawn from the bottom plate 11.
It should be understood that the drawings are merely illustrative and do not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawings are illustrative ota preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changesand modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What is claimed is 1. A mold of the character set forth, comprising a bottom plate provided with a recess, lugs extending upwardly from opposite sides of the recess, and a top plate having core portions and recesses for the receptionof the lugs.
2. A moldofthe-character set forth, comprising a: bottom plate having a recess, lugs extending upwardly from the bottom plate at opposite sides of the recess and having curved top sides and perpendicular rear sides, and a: topplate having core portions and recesses similar to the contour of. the lugs,

A mold of the character set forth, comprisinga bottom plate provided with a recess and lugs extending upwardly from opposite sides of the; recess, dowel pins extending upwardly from the plate,and a top plate having core portions and provided with recesses for the" reception of the" lugs and openingsr'or the reception of the pins;
