S. H. CAMPBELL FLOOR CONSTRUCTION Filed July 5, 1924 \NVENTOR S.H.CAMPBELL BY ,M
. ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 9, 1926.
UNITED STATES tease STERLING H. CAMPBELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO WESTERN RAILWAY EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
FLOOR CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed July v5, 1924. Serial No. 724,285.
My invention relates to floor securing means "for railway cars of the general type described in Pratt United States Patent No. 1,498,119 in which the securing means does not pass through the floor sill.
The object of the present invention is to provide a clip for the above named con struction which may be made from a simple form, such for example, as a disk-shaped piece of sheet metal.
In the accompanying drawings which il lustrate one form of floor construction made in accordance with my invention, Figure l is a vertical cross section through a portion of a car floor to which my invention is applied; Figure 2 is a section taken in a different plane; and Figure 8 is a detail view of the clip.
One of the floor boards 5 of a railway car is shown in Figure 1 as resting on a center sill 6. It will be understood, however, that my invention may be used to secure the boards to either side or center sills. Formed. in the boards adjacent to the edge of the sill flange are bolt holes 7 through which pass the bolts 8 for securing the boards to the sills. Each of the bolts is engaged by a. nut and has a slot 10 formed in its end so that the said end may be spread to lock the nut in position after it has been tightened.
Surrounding the bolt 8 between the nut 9 and the board 5 is the clip 11 which is termed ot a dislcshaped piece of sheetmetal with a central opening 12 for the passage of the bolt.' A segmental portion 13 of the disk is bent down slightly out of the plane ot the body of the clip so as to conform to the angle of the under face of the flange of the sill. Two other segmental portions 14 are bentup substantially at right angles to the body of the clip so as to engage with the board and hold the body of the clip out of contact therewith. It will be seen that by this construction any surface dimension of the clip from its central bolt opening to its periphery is greater than the distance from the boltto the sill and consequently the clip cannot turn into any position in which it will not engage with the sill. The portions letwill form stops to prevent such rotation when in their normal position and it straightened out to such an extent as to tail to form stops they will themselves form engaging portions for the flange 01" the sill.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a car sill having a flange, of a floor board supported on said sill, a bolt extending through said board adjacent to the edge the flange, and a clip on said bolt and bearing against the under face of the flange, said clip being provided with a pair of contact members for the board-arranged at an angle to each other and formed by bending over portions oi the clip.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a car sill having a flange, of a floor board supported on said sill, a, bolt extending through said board adjacent to the edge of the flange, and a clip on said bolt formed of a substantially circular piece of metal and bearing on the under face of the flange, said clip being provided with a pair of contact members for the board formed by bending over segments of the clip.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this the 2nd day of July, 1924.
