`THE GRAPHIC C0.PHOTD. L`ITH`.39&M PARK PLAGEJLY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. SWAN, OF TAMAROA, ILLINOIS.
, IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,626, dated March 9, 1875; application filed October 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CEARLEs SHERMAN SWAN, of Tamaroa, in the county of Perry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Press, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will rst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved press, taken on the line w .r of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail section, showing the trip contrivance for the beater; and Fig. 4 is a detail in plan view, showing the .operation of the trip mechanism.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the follower, which is arranged in a horizontal case, B, and worked by the togglejointed bars C D and drums E F, the same as in other presses now made. To this press I propose to add the vertical beater-case G and beater H, for compressing the hay to a considerable extent before it is acted upon by the press, so as to increase the efficiency ofthe press, and to raise it I arrange an extension, I, of the shaft by which the drums E F are Worked above the sweep J, with a drum, K, on it, carrying a block, L, at the periphery, to which the rope M is attached. This block is capable of sliding freely around the drum, being connected to it by lugs or projections N, iitted in grooves in it, so arranged to hold it on, while allowing it to slide freely. This block is held, when the beater is to be raised, by a pawl, 0, and a catch, P. VThe pawl is pivoted to the drum at Q, so as to swing around and allow the block to escape when it is released by the catch, and it is returned to and engaged with the catch by the spring It. The catch is raised to release the pawl by pressing under the stationary cam S in the cross-tree above. The shaft I is mounted in a step or socket in the top of the sweep, so that it can be lifted out, and it is provided with a lever, T, to lift it out and let it rest While the drums arekept in motion for working the follower. The yoke U holds it out of gear. The lower portion W of the beater-case I have provided With a removable front, X, and arranged on pivots Y, so as to swing forward when the front is removed, and dump the hay into case B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of a beater case, G, and beater H with the press A B, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the block L, pawl O, catch P, and spring R with the rope M and the drum K, substantially as speciiied.
3. The combination of the lever T with the sweep J and sha-ft I, the sweep is also em ployed to turn the drums E F, substantially as specified.
4. The part W of the beater-case, having a removable front, X, and arranged on pivots Y, for dumping the hay into case B, substantially as specified.
CHARLES S. SWAN.
