This invention relates to laundry ironing presses and the like and more particularly relates to improvements in burn guards for protecting the operator from being acci dentally burned by the hot exposed polished metal'face of the-ironing head or buck.
A further object of the invention is to produce an automatically operating burn guard in the form of a fiat member adapted to cover the not metal ironing surface of the machine when open and this device may assume the form of a roller curtain which is designed to be drawn across the face of the ironing member as the press opens up and which similarly moves back away from the face of the member to expose its polished ironing face directly to the work when the from between the closing-ironer jawsin or means such .as a pedal 13 pivoted at 14 in the frame havingan upstandin bell crank 55:. r toggle link 15. This arrangement places a chain 32 at each end of the pressing ead 17 and this chain-serves to "draw a burn" guard back and forth across the head pressing face 21 and theguard may con-. sist of a roll-up curtain or otherfimeans.

is adapted to carry the aforesaid burn guard curtain and in this instance a curtain drum 34 is shown freely mounted on the front shaft and adapted to undergo slight rotary motion relatively to the shaft 30. Though this shaft is carried freely in the drum 34, a spring 38 encircles the shaft 30 and has one end thereof anchored to this shaft at 28 and the other end fixed to the drum at 22. Thus the shaft and drum are connected together by the spring only which acts something like a flexible key. The shaft, being the original driving member, drives the drum through the spring because the s rin is installed under a torsion strain sufficient to exercise a driving relation over the shaft.
The innermost end. of ,a curtain 35 is attached to the drum as is done with any ordinary roller curtain device. The outer free end of the curtain 35 is attached to a draw rod 36 which is preferably made somewhat longer than the width of the curtain. 35'so as to reach out beyond the brackets 29 and be attached as at 37 at each end thereof to the chains 32. In operation, the ironing machine operator depresses the pedal 13 which brings the two ironing jaws 17 and 18 together. The spring 57 serves to hold the chain 53 in positive engagement with the drive pin-- ion 54 in order thatthis pinion drive a shaft 60. A sprocket 61 is fixed to the shaft and a chain 62 is passed over the sprocket 61 as well as being passed over a sprocket 63 fixed to a shaft 64' and adapted to drive a curtain drum 65. A curtain 66 is rolled upon the drum with its outer edge fastened to the chain as at 67.
Thus in operating the last described formof the invention shown in Figures 4 and 5. it follows that an up anddown motion of the head 51 causes the drive pinion 54 to traverse the flexible suspended chain 53 which causes the curtain 66 to roll back away from and uncover the ironing surface 50 as the jaw 51 closes down on the work. Similarly, as the jaw opens, the drive pinion 54 acts to again draw the curtain 66 back across the ironing face to protect the operator from being burned while Working about the machine.

An ironing press comprising in combination, cooperating ironing-jaws provided with an exposed ironing surface, means to open and close the jaws, a burn guard protective member mounted on the press, gear drive means to move the burn guard back and forth across theexposed ironing surface, a chain cooperating with the gear means and adapted to travel back and forth in relation to the exposed ironing a burn guard member carried on the jaw with the chains and fastened to the chains.

An ironing press comprising in combination, cooperating ironing jaws provided with an exposed ironing face, means to open and close the jaws, chains carried on one of the jaws, means to actuate the chains, a drum rotated by the chain, and a. curtain carried 'on the drum and fastened to the chain.

An ironing press comprising in combination, cooperating ironing jaws having an exposed ironing face, means to open wide the jaws and close the same, sprocket wheels, a drum carried on one of the jaws and rotated by the sprocket wheels and chain, a curtain mounted on the drum, and av rack and pinion adapted to drive the chain and sprocket wheels.

An ironing press comprising in combination, cooperating wide opening ironing jaws, means to open and close the jaws, a pair of shafts which are mounted on the front and rear edges of one of the jaws, sprocket wheels carried by the shafts, chains on'the sprockets, a drum carried on one of the shafts, and a burn guard mounted onv I the drum and attached to the chain, and
means to drive the shafts.
10. An ironing press comprising in combination, cooperating wide opening jaws,.
means to open and close the jaws, a pair of shafts which are mounted on the front and rear edges of one of the jaws, sprocket wheels garried by the shafts, chains on the sprockets, a drum carried on one of the shafts, a burnguard mounted on the drum and attached to the chain, and a yieldable connecting device serving to connect the drum to the shaft but allowing relatively rotatory motion thereon, and means to drive the shafts.

An ironing press comprising in combination, cooperating ironing jaws, means to open and close the jaws, a shaft carried on one jaw, a drum ournaled on the shaft, flexible' means connecting the shaft and drum together whereby the shaft rotates the drum, a burn guard curtain carried on the drum 1 and rolled up and unrolled by the rotation of the shaft driving through the flexible means, and means for operating the shaft.
12. An ironing press comprising in combination, cooperating ironing jaws, means to open and close the jaws, a shaft carried on one jaw, a drum j ournaled on the shaft, flexi-' ble means connecting the shaft and drum together whereby the shaft rotates the drum,
a burn guard curtain carried on the drum and rolled up and unrolled by the rotation of the shaft drlving through the flexible means, means for operating the shaft, and means 00- operating with the aforesaid jaw opening and closing means whereby the curtain is drawn off the drum as the jaws open and rolled back on the drum as the jaws close.
13. An ironing press comprising in combination, cooperating ironingaws adapted to open wide and close upon the work and having an exposed ironing face, means to open and close the jaws, a drum carried by one of the jaws, a curtain carried on the drum, a
