some holding means to retain the saine open, y
and my invention aims to furnish such doors with props-that are at all times in engagement with the doors and can be easily swung to active door holding positions.
My invention further aims to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive door holder which can be easily and quickly attached to the inner side of a door and supported in an inactive position until such time that the door is to be propped open, when the holder can be swung to an active position to engage in the ground or pavement to prevent accidental closing of the door. y
My invention still further aims to provide a door holder embodying a socket member and prop ball member, with means in the socket member to prevent lost motion, rattling and accidental shifting of the prop ball member relative to the socket member.
The construction entering into my invention will be hereinafter specically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a garage having doors held open by `my holders;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of a portion of the door holder with the prop partly broken away and partly in section, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the door holder shown in Fig. 2.
The socket member of the door holding device comprises a circular plate 1 provided with screw openings 2 so that the plate may be easily attached to the inner side of a door 3, preferably near the lower edge of the door and in proximity to the outer edge ofthe door.
Centrally of the plate 1 is an enlargement 4 formedwith a socket or recess 5 and said enlargement is provided with slots or grooves 6 and 7 communicating with the socket 5 and disposed at a right angle to each other. The
formation of these grooves or slots leaves a dividing member 8 between the slots and this dividing member is braced by a radially K disposed rib 9 so that it cannot be readily Serial No. 110,377.
broken by movement of a prop ball member to be'hereinafter considered.
The socket 5 has its limer wall substantially spherical, except where cut away for `the slots 6 and 7, and another cut away poi tion is in the Vrear wall of the socket where it communicates with a recess 10 for a yieldable clamping member 11, preferablv inthe form of a rubber or leather disk which is re tained within the recess 10 by an apertured retaining member 12 countersunk in the rear face of the plate 1 and retained therein by any suitable means. e
Adjustably mounted in the socket' 5 is the ball or head 13 of a prop 14 having a pointed end 15 adapted to engage in the ground or a pavement over which the door 3 swings. The prop 14C is preferably cylindrical and has a diameter approximating the width of each of the slots 6 and 7. The ball or head 13 is engaged bythe clamping member 11 and held against the inner wall of the socket 5, so that there will be no lost motion of the ball or head within the socket. lt is placed in the socket prior to mounting the members 11 and 12 in the plate 1.
Assuming that the plate 1 has been attached to the door 3, as shown in Fig. 1, the prop 14 can extend downwardly through the slot 7 at an angle to the door 3 to hold the door in an open position. :When Jthe door 3 is to be closed, the prop 14 is raised to substantially a horizontal position and then swung laterally into the slot 6, so that the member 8 may cooperate with the sockety in supporting the prop in a horizontal position, as indicated by dash lines in Figs. 1 and 2. `When in this inactive position the prop is against vthe door'and doesv not in- 'terfere with a closed position of the door.
Obviously the plate land the enlargement l may be of various shapes and any suitable means employed `for attaching the plate to the inner wall of a door. properly positioned the prop lllis at all times convenient for holding the door 3 in an open position. I attach considerable importance to the simplicity of construction, and while in the drawing there` is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modicationsas fallwithin the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:-
1. A door holding device comprising a With the plate socket member, a ball prop member held by said socket member, and means in said socket member binding against said ball prop member to prevent lost motion of said ball prop member in said socket member.
2. A door holding device comprising a socket member having slots therein, and a ball prop member in said socket member and shiftable from one slot to the other.
3. A door holding device comprising a plate7 a prop, a ball and socket `connection between said plate and said prop, and means in connection with said plate adapted to hold said prop in a delined position relative to said plate.
l. A door holdingdevice comprising a socket member, a prop member having,- a
ball in said socket member so that said prop member may be placed in an active position at an angle to said socket member, and means in connection with said socliet member adapted to support said prop in substantially a horizontal inactive position.
5. A door holding device comprising' a socket member having slots therein With one slot substantially at a right angle to Jche other slot, a ball prop member carried by said socket member and sivingable from one slot thereof to the other slot, and a cushion member in said socket member bearing against the ball of said prop.
ln testimony whereof aix my signature.
HARRY E. KLINE.
