raient j :BLOWER FOR THRASHING IVACHINESL Application filed May 13,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements iii-blowers for thrashing machines and has for oneof its objects to provide a blower having a pipe section or nozzle with a swiveled mounting to permit `rotary adjustment of the nozzle whereby thedirection of discharge vof the blast: may
be varied as desired.
The primary object of the invention is to provide novel adjusting means for the rotatable blower nozzle wherein the operator upon the top of the thrashing machine frame at considerable distance from the blast nozzle operates mechanism for changing the position of the nozzle and being so situated at a point removed from the usual area of dust and dirt as to render more efficient use of the adjustable blast nozzle.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, that same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
1n the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a thrashing machine equipped with the improved blower attachment and distant operating means therefor, a part of the operating means being shown in its collapsed and inoperative position by dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the worm and gear connection with the operating chain for rotatably shifting the blower pipe or nozzle,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary end elevationj al view of the operating mechanism for the lower pipe, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary enlarged side elevational view.
Referring more in detail to the accompany.- ing` drawings, a reference numeral 1 designates a thrashingl machine of the usual construction provided with the fan boX 2 and outlet pipe 3 with the blast or blower pipe 4 swiveled at its lower end upon the .outlet pipe 3. A swiveled connection between the outlet pipe 3 of the fan box and the blower pipe 4 is of the ordinary construction .and in lieu of the usual operating means directly associated with the swiveled connec 1926.A Serial No. 108,959.
tion for the blower pipe, distantly operated means are: provided wherein an operator located upon the top ofthe thrashing machine 1 at a distance from the blower pipe will have complete control of the operation thereof.
The bracket 5 supported upon the Vfor` ward side of the outlet pipe 3 is forked at its outer upper end'to provide spaced bearings G within which a shaft 7 is journaled, the shaft 7 having a worm 8 fixed thereto between the spaced bearings 6 while one end of said shaft extending outwardly of an end bearing has a sprocket wheel 9 keyed thereto. A worm gear 10 of ring formation incloses the lower swiveled end of the blower pipe 4 and being fixed to said pipe, the latter is rotated upon its swiveled mounting when the worm S is driven.
The operating means for the worm 8, preferably being of the chain and sprocket type as herein illustrated, although it is to be understood that belt, gear or other connections may be substituted, comprises a standard 11 hinged as at 12 to the upper side of the thrashing machine frame at a point spaced from the blower pipe 4 and having a shaft 13 journaled in its upper end. A hand wheel 14 fixed to one end of the shaft 13 and carrying a handle 15 is manually operated for rotating the shaft, while the other end of the shaft has a sprocket rwheel 16 fixed thereto. The two sprocket wheels 9 and 16 are alined and conmiunication therebetween is established by the inclosing sprocket chain 17. The standard 11 is braced and supported inthe upright position shown in Figs. 1 and 4 by the angle braces 18 pivoted at their upper ends to the upper end ofthe standard while the lower ends thereof are detachably anchored as at 19 to the upper side of the thrashing machine frame. When the mechanism is out of use, the same is collapsed to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. It will therefor be seen that upon operating the hand wheel 14 and shaft 13, motion thereof is communicated to the shaft 7 carrying the worm 8 which in turn operates the worm gear 10 to rotatably shift the blower pipe 4 in the desired direction.
lt will therefore be seen that the operator in charge of the blower pipe 4 is far removed therefrom and out of the zone of dust and dirt in the immediate vicinity of the blower pipe, and is in a position to clearly observe all operations and more ef ieotively operate the blower pipe.
From the above detailed description of the device it is believed that the construction andoperation will at once be understood, and while there is herein shown and described, the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departingfrom the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
l. In a blower attachment'for thrashing machines, a swiveled blower pipe, a worm and worm gear associated therewith and a distantly operated chain and sprocket mechanism for operating the worm to rotate the blower pipe and a hinged bracket mounting for the far end of the chain and sprocket mechanism to permit collapse thereof when out of use.
2. In a blower attachment for thrashing machines, a swiveled blower pipe, a ring worm gear carried thereby, a worm meshing with the gear, a sprocket wheel on one end of the worm, a jonrnalled shaft located above the thrashing machine ,body and remotely positioned with respect to the worm, a sprocketV wheel on the shaft and a sprocke et chain connecting the two sprocket wheels, a hinged bracket supporting` the shaft and a hand wheel for rotating the shaft. v
In testimony whereof I afx my signature.
