FASTENING MEANS FOR DEMOUN'IABLE RIMS.

This invention relates to fastening means tor rims tor pneumatic tires, and it has tor its object to provide a novel and simple device tor holding and locking the demountable rim in tire-engaging position so that the rim may be quickly and easily assembled and disassembled therefrom.
A further object of this invention resides in providing an improved threaded connection between the parts ot the telly band tor locking the demountable rim quickly and easily in position; which parts, by reason of their construction, avoid the difliculties arising by the sticking together 0t such sections, due to rusting.
These and other objects will be apparent from a perusal of the-tollowing specification when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a View partly in section of my assembled device;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view partly in perspective ot the two-part rim, clearly showing the screw thread by means of which they are connected together.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the telly 1 is provided with a telly band including the rim 2 having a laterally ex tending retaining flange 3 and a screw thread t which preferably is arranged as a quadruple radius thread, rolled, out or cast in the telly rim in any desired manner. This screw thread a threadedly receives a retaining ring 5 likewise similarly threaded so that the retaining ring can make threaded locking connection with the telly rim 2. This retaining ring 5 is provided with an oitset lug 6 having a bore in its outer end to receive a headed bolt 7 which threads through a nut 8 secured to the telly 1 ot the wheel. The construction is such that bolt 7 may rotate relatively to lug 6, but is not capable of moving endwise therethrough. This retaining ring 5 is provided on its outer tace with an outwardly projecting flange 9 corresponding with the flange 3 on the telly rim 2.
These two flanges 3 and 9 are adapted to clinch between them two detachable sections of the demountable rim proper. These sections comprise a rim 10 including a substantially flat horizontal portion 11 and an outwardly projecting flange 12. The flat portion 11 is provided on its inner tace with a 1922. Serial No. 553,380.
preferably quadruple radius thread 13 likewise rolled, out or cast, which thread engages 111 a corresponding thread 14 tormed in the outer surtac-e of the other section of the demountable rim, represented as a detachable flange 15. The flange 12 ot the rim and the detachable flange 15 are adapt-- ed to clinch between them the shoe ot the tire as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. In order to positively lock the detachable flange 15 and rim 11 in position atter they are threaded together, there is provided a spring clip 1 6 which is tast to the inner surtace ot the rim section 10 and is provided with a lug 17 which snaps into a hole 18 in the adjacent tace ot the detachable flange 15.
Particular attention is drawn to the speciiic arrangement ot the threads which are peculiarly adapted as a means tor providing the effective and sure detachability ot the sections 2 and 5. ness ot the construction is due in a great measure to the cross sectional contour ot the threads which are specifically known as radius threads. By means of the special construction ot these threads, the more extended peripheral bearlng surtace is taken advan-' tage of to provide a more eflective fastening. So also, the rounded surface of the periphcry of the threads tends to eliminate the sticking which is so prevalent with the V- type of thread, and which is due in a great measure to the points and sharp angles of the V or similar ty 3e threads. So also, the effective locking 0 the threads is secured, due to the tact that the opposite inner portions of the tire spread outwardly against the inner taces ot the flanges 15 and 12 and these in turn press outwardly against the flanges 3 and 5 which in turn transmit the pressure to the inner surtace ot the round periphery of the thread 4, thereby securely locking the sections from longitudinal movement.
It is obvious from the above drawing and description that when it is desired to mount the tire on thewheel, the shoe ot the tire is clinched between the flanges 12 and 15 by threading the detachable flange to the rim and snapping the clip 16 into retaining position. The two sections ot the demountable rim are then placed inposition on the telly hand between the flange 8 and the flange 5 ot the retaining ring, which is then given a peripheral movement thereby threading the retaining ring into position to clinch the two The particular eflectivesectioned rim to the telly. The bolt 7 is then thread-ed to nut 8 thereby to draw together and lock the parts in assembled position. It is to be noted that the bolt 7 is inclined toward the telly. It is highly desirable to have this line ot inclination .substantially parallel to the line of inclination of the thread, so that the drawing together ot the threaded sections is easier.
10 The invention as thus described constitutes a very simple, cheap and convenient means tor firmly and eitectively mounting a ,tire on a wheel.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing trom the .spirit ot the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described. the invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. In a device ot the class described, the
combination ot a tire engaging rim, a' telly rim having an upstanding flange along one side engaging one otthe sides 0t said tire engaging rim and provided adjacent its opposite side with a thread, a retaining ring,
"having a flat portion disposed between said tire engaging rim and telly rim and threaded on its inner side to engage the thread on said telly rim, said retaining ring having a lateral upstanding flange adapted to engage the opposite side of said tire engaging rim, and means to lock said telly rim B5 and retaining ring in threaded engagement,
said means serving to tighten said ring into and hold the same in threaded engagement with said telly rim. p
2. In adevice ot the class described, the
40 combination of a tire engaging rim, a telly rim having a flat portion termed on its outer tace substantially adjacent one edge, With rolled threads ot radius type, and provided at its other edge with an upstanding flange adapted to contact with-one side of the tire rim, a retaining ring provided with a flat portion formed with counterpart threads on its inner. side engaging the threads 0t said telly rim and termed with an upstanding flange contacting with the opposite side ot said tire rim, and means tor locking said threaded parts in engagement, said means serving to tighten said ring into and hold the same in threadedengagement with said telly rim.

In a device ot the class described, the combination ot a tire engaging rim, a telly rim comprising detachable sections adapted to engage opposite sides of the tire engaging rim, said sections having inter-engaging, quadruple, rolled-threads ot the radius type, and means tor holding said threaded sections in locked engaging position, said means serving to tightensaid ring into and hold the same in threaded engagement with said telly rim.

In a device ot the class described, the combination ot a tire engaging rim, a telly, a nut carried thereby, a telly rim adapted to term a clamping member tor one side ot said tire engaging rim, a retaining ring adapted to torm a clamping member tor the other side, ot said rim, said telly rim and retaining ring having similarly termed inter-engaging'radius threads tor detachably connectingthe same, a threaded bolt connected to said retaining ring and threadedly engaging the threadednut.
