HERALD BENJAMIN GREENING, OF HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO THE B. GREENING WIRE COMPANY, LIMITED, OF HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
WOVEN-WIRE STRUCTURE.
Application filed February 4, 1924, Serial No. 690,641, and in Canada May 26, 1923.
My invention relates to improvements in woven wire structures wlth more particular reference to lathing used for building purposes, and the object of the invention is to Y devise a structure which will produce a woven wire lath of exceptional rigidity.
My invention consists essentially of a woven wire structure comprising warp wires and weft wires with binding wires substantially twisted about and following the warp wires and securing the weft wires thereto, and a strengthening metallic rib disposed parallel with the weft wires, all as hereinafter more particularly described and illus trated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan View of a woven wire structure embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a section'on the line 3, 3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 4C is a section on the line l, 4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of a V-shaped sheet metal rib used in my invention.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
A woven wire structure constructed ac cording to my invention comprises the par allel warp wires 1 and the parallel weft wires 2 and 3.
The weft wires are disposed perpendicu' larly to the warp wires and are arranged alternately on opposite sides of the warp wires, the weft wires 2 being on one side of the warp wires and the weft wires 3 on the other side.
4 are binding wires which follow substantially along the warp wires and are twisted about said warp wires so that they pass alternately from one side to the other of the warp wires and on the outside of the weft wires thus serving to bind the weft wires to the warp wires, and forming the whole into a unitary structure. I g The binding wires 4 constitute wl'iat might be termed auxiliary warp wires.-
5 is a stiffening rib made from a sheet metal stamping.
The edges of this rib are formed with spaced projections 6 separated by indentures or notches 7 These projections and notches are preferably made of scalloped form.
The construction of my invention is as follows.
The structure is woven after the usual manner and the rib 5 is stamped from sheet 138 6211 into substantially V-shape as shown in This rib is then mounted upon the structure so that it extends parallel with the weft wires, the projections 6 extending through the meshes of the structure and the bottoms of the scallops or notches 7 resting upon the warp wires 1 and binding wires 4. I
The engagement of the binding wire 4c with the bottoms of the notches 7 forms a positioning means for centrally locating the rib and preventing displacement thereof.
In this position the projections 6 are as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 3.
The structure is then subject to pressure so that the projections 6 are bent upwardly into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 in which position they engage underneath the weft wires 2.
In this position it will be noted that the engagement of the'binding wires i with the bottoms of the notches T, as indicated at A.
in Figs. 3 and 4, serves to securely retain the rib in position.
Various modifications may be made in my invention without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim and therefore the exact construction shown isto be taken as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
For instance the particular form of the rib 5 and the scalloped edges thereof might be altered. I
What I claim as my invention is:
The combination in a woven wire structure, comprising parallel warp wires and parallel weft wires disposed perpendicularly to and, alternately an opposite sides of: the
Warp wires, of a binding Wire associated with each Warp Wire and securing the Weft wires thereto, said binding Wires twisted to pass outside the Weft Wires and crossing the Warp Wire between adjacent Weft Wires a strengthening rib disposed parallel to the Weft Wires and resting upon the Warp Wires,
the edges of said rib scalloped, the binding Wires engaging the bottoms of said scallops and constituting positioning means for the rib, the extremities of said scallops projecting through the structure and bent upwardly to form lugs engaging the Weft Wires on the side thereof remote from the rib.
